“Fabulous retreat and excellent host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for two nights recently with our teenage daughters. The room are exquisite, the guest lounge for enjoying complimentary afternoon tea is incredibly welcoming with the open roaring fire.
The icing on the cake was Matthews imaginative menu for dinner. A 4 course gastronomic delight. I'm not kidding, the best food I've had in a long while & for someone who has dined at Gordon Ramsays restaurant in Chelsea, the quality of the food combined with the effortless hosting by chef, was right up there.
The surrounding area is lovely and I would say this would make an excellent summer retreat too.

We had heard of Melfort House, but had never actually been. Now that we have, we will definitely go again. The owners of this beautiful property have this fantastic blend of not being at all intrusive, and yet somehow always close at hand to help, to answer queries, or even offer gloves and hats to our entire family when we went out! The location is stunning, overlooking the sea loch; the comfort is sumptuous, and as for the food! Fine dining is guaranteed, and part of the attraction is that you are served what is in season, the way it should be. There is plenty to do all around, and we enjoyed our trip to Easdale where we took a bracing journey across the water in a powerful rib. Oban is close at hand, and of course hills, walks, sailing, nature trails and so on, all over the place.

Room Tip: All three rooms are gorgeous, but of course, the sea view is the one to die for.....

Just returned from 2nights at Melfort House. A very warm welcome from Matthew, when we arrived, after a very long detour via Crianlarich because of an accident, so we really appreciated the pot of tea and homemade pancakes. The room and ambiance of the house was excellent.

Matthew, who is the owner and also the chef, provided us with a well presented and perfectly cooked dinner on both evenings. A lovely area, and we would have no hesitation in recommending Melfort House for a relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: we were in the Hill Room which was very spacious and comfortable

For our 20th wedding anniversary we decided to stay at special places in Scotland and this was certainly one of them. Beautiful and spacious Loch Room for 3 nights, a great bath room with tropical rain shower and the warm welcome of Matthew made us feel home. Not to forget a fabulous bed, great view and an exquisite breakfast every morning. (Even if you are not a fan of a full scottish breakfast, make sure you order the mushrooms with creamy sauce (e.g. with scrambled eggs). Delicious! Certainly a phantastic B&B we can highly recommend and love to return soon!

Melfort House is absolutely stunning. If you are looking for a nice, relaxing break away and want to eat INCREDIBLE food, this is the place to be. We had no mobile phone signal or WiFi - just explored the area and read (and drank!) We had a fabulous time and will definitely be back.

Yes, I read the reviews before going there, and even knowing what to expect I was surprised by just how good it really was. The relaxed atmosphere was superb. In the pictures, I thought the dinning room looked a little austere and formal, but in reality, and with the candles all lit, the ambiance was near perfect.

I do quiet a few reviews on Trip Advisor, but mainly for restaurants, and I'm normally prompted with the question, 'was this one of the best meals you've ever eaten?'. I've never been able to answer yes before, and was looking forward to being able to answer affirmatively this time, only I wasn't asked.

I tend to remember my holidays by the 'memorable' food dishes I've eaten. Suffice to say, Matthew produced several which for me, outstanding winners (favourite being the Venison). I sincerely hope it won't be too long before being able to make a return visit. The combination of the food, the place, and the whole ambiance made it one of my all time favourite breaks.

Matthew is a charming host with a wonderful relaxed way.

We travelled around Scotland with friends and made Melfort House the "last and best" stop of our journey through the Highlands. What a great choice it was! Our host, also our chef, was a wealth of information about the area and made us most welcome in his beautiful home. After a fabulous repast (haggis, pork stuffed with black pudding and cream sauce were the highlights) we retired to the gorgeously decorated sitting room for conversation with the other guests (there are 3 rooms total.) Our bedroom was beautifully decorated, fresh and clean, with handmade soap and fresh flowers in the bath. The bed and bedding were top class. Though luxurious, Melfort House is firstly a home, welcoming and gracious, where you'll feel relaxed, pampered and very lucky to be there. The raves you read here on Tripadvisor might lead you to believe this wonderful place is expensive--but we thought it was a true bargain, paying less than we did at more "ordinary" places in the popular (especially in August) Highlands. We wholeheartedly recommend it.

Room Tip: Melfort House doesn't provide liquor or wine, but will serve whatever wine you bring with you at...
