“Good for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We were two (2) couples travelling together to the Covarrubias. This is a simple resort but the beach is amazing. Great location for snorkling, bring your own equipment! The food was good compare to other resort we've been to in Cuba but the drinks were local and poor. Dont expect luxury in the room but they are clean. The staff was great ! I would recommend this resort to people that travelled to Cuba before and know what you can expect in this country. Good for the price and the location is beautiful and really quiete.

Room Tip: Bring mosquito repellent - Necessary if you wish to explore a little.

We just returned from the Brisas and I will give you our pros and cons of this resort:
Pros:
The beach is just fabulous. You could not ask for a better beach in Cuba. I found it was kept very clean and you never were without beach chairs. Of course we were there in off season so that could also be the reason that you never misses chairs.

The staff at this resort are just amazing. Everybody is helpful and kind, whether you tipped them or not. We did of course, but not everytime. We still got a great smile and hello from everyone. I cant write everyones name in the staff because I would need lots of pages, so I will tell you that they are all great people from the reception area to the pool staff etc etc etc......

We needed to have our room changed because the location was too far for us and the next morning it was changed right away to a closer location, that was also appreciated from us. Also the first room was very very dirty.

THE CONS

Though the rooms are very spacious they need to do a little cleanup of the walls and ceilings. We dont really like having dead flies on the walls from previous guests, I know paint is not easy to get in Cuba but a little wall and ceiling cleaning from the maintenace crew would be greatly appreciated.

Nearly no water in the pool the first few days. Now I know there are not alot of pool people out there, but we love the pool as much as the ocean. That was fixed though and the last couple of days we were happy because there was water in the pool................. and we enjoyed it.

The sunwing rep: That review will be sent to sunwing.

All in all, we got a good rest, met some really nice people who were also guests there and amazing staff who worked there, what more could you ask for

Room Tip: Get a room in the 5200 section. Bring lots of bug spray you will definately need it.

My wife and I are returning visitors to Covarrubias, and it was our 7th vacation to Cova in March/April this year.
We got emotionally attached to this place and people working there during our first stay, back in 2006. It was such unforgettable experience, that keeps us coming back year after year. We go other places, too, but every year one trip is reserved for Cova. Every time we enormously enjoy spending time with our Cova friends, or just relaxing on amazing beach, feeling safe and comfortable like in our own home. People working there are wonderful, we made a lot of friends over the years, from gardeners to management, and that level of hospitality, genuine friendliness, and readiness to help any way they can we haven’t met anywhere else. Just as an illustration, one of our gardener friend brought us every morning two coconuts from his home (apparently they tasted better than ones at the resort).
All previous years we had a beautiful weather during our stay, this time was a little cooler and windy for first four days, but it didn’t stop us from enjoying other forms of activities throughout the resort.
Room we got was on second floor (as we asked), nice and spacious, but with not properly working TV. Told Julio at front desk ( by the way, he is great problem solver, attentive, polite and very professional, and very friendly at the same time), no problem, we got new one next morning.
Yes, there was a water shortage during some hours of the day, but always at the same time, so you could easily schedule your activities around it, so no big deal for us.
Food was fairly good, plenty to choose from, decent variety, and always something you enjoy.
Full body massage for only 16 CUC is a must, Luis is an artist.
Already planning our visit next year.
Big thank you and warm regards to our Cova friends.
Nos vemos el próximo año.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

A group of 7 of us (2 couples, 3 singles) went to Brisas Covarrubias the week of April 27 - May 5th, 2013. We traveled out of the Montreal airport and arrived late on a Saturday night. My husband and I have been to Cuba several times, and never to the same place twice as of right now (we tend to do last min deal for sake of going cheap) and we had a fabulous time. Overall we had an amazing time, and here are some of the reasons why:

1) No water problems, not sure what the other reviews are referring to but this was not an issue at any point during our trip (it was always available, and if we wanted a brand new bottle of fresh water it was under $1 to buy at the store). Also had plenty of water available at the bars and they would fill up your Bubbas or mugs if you wanted as well. None of us got sick from ice cubes or any of that nonsense either.

2) Food was always different, always good. No it's not a 5 star restaurant experience, but they really do try to appeal to everyone. If you're vegan, you're going to have a problem anywhere you go in Cuba, but even vegetarians would be pleased with the selection. We had someone with a weak someone and another member of our party who didn't eat pork and they were great at guiding us through the items on the menu and appealing to all of us - never went hungry! They have an a la carte which changes themes each night, which was excellent, and a buffet and a snack bar that's open 24/7 so really nothing to complain about.

3) Staff were very personable and engaging. Always had events running from bingo, darts, aquafit and yoga on the beach. All around great people and very attentive. We didn't tip until one of the last days and never had an issue so don't feel like they were only nice because of that. We gave a peso here and there but the main stuff was at the end to thank them for excellent service.

4) Beach was amazing and had plenty of chairs, never had to get up early or 'save' chairs. With 7 people that's almost unheard of! We did pool in afternoon and it was the same thing. Awesome! NO JELLY FISH EITHER, which was very nice.

5) VERY clean resort - although the actual maintenance of the buildings is always an issue in Cuba, they tend to look run down, the grounds were amazingly clean and well kept.

6) Nice big rooms, most of which are within 5 steps from the main pool and beach, it's a smaller resort that gives a cozy, home-like feeling.

Some additional information to be aware of:

* We went on a week that was NOT peak season, so not busy at this time which made for an even better experience

* Not many day trips, and yes the bus ride was about 2 hours from airport to hotel but you get that in most areas of Cuba so this really isn't a make-or-break factor (we did a snorkeling trip with animation crew which was awesome)

* Upon arrival we didn't actual have rooms ready for us, they didn't have us in their system. No problem though, they got some ready for us and have us free bottles of booze for the inconvenience. Very nice people, and make sure to bring all your documentation in case of any issues (In my opinion this is common sense practice, but maybe not for everyone).

* We did a special day trip into Puerto Padre and had an amazing time, but be sure to bring toilet paper with you as some of the places don't have it (also applied wherever you go in Cuba though)

* If you're big on going to bed early, you may want to request a room further away from the stage area as it did get loud at night. We really enjoyed staying up to watch the entertainment (bands and shows were very good!) but on nights we went to bed, we ended up hearing it anyways since it was quite loud. Just some food-for-thought.

* Kids staff were also great, they had a lot of activities for children in the pool area and always had ice cream time at 4pm for anyone who wanted it! The activities were geared for all ages and they did a good job making everything family friendly while still making it an adult experience (we did not have any children with us, just something we noticed).

Hope these bits of information help you make your decisions for your trip! We had an excellent time and would definitely go back again!

Room Tip: If you're going for cheap and clean, this place was amazing. Great price, amazing staff and a wo...

Since it's off-season, we had the place to ourselves. The staff took such good care of us, beautiful people. We landed at midnight and were taken by cab to the hotel, took about two hours. It was dark, and everyone else got on buses to other resorts. It was unsettling for two girls travelling, but I didn't realize how safe Cuba is. Take pesos with you! Or exchange your american there, but all amenities are in pesos. Lots of bugs, bring spray. The internet was up all week, 6 pesos for an hour long calling card - leave your laptop home, the only internet is hardwired. Public washrooms don't have toilet paper or soap so bring some. The power goes out periodically, and they lost water sometimes, but that just meant more drinks by the pool or a swim in the ocean. This isn't a five star hotel, but the staff are six star people. It's hard to bring down extra things when the weight limit is 20 kgs, but they really appreciate it. Watch on your way home too that they don't lean on your luggage while weighing it at the airport. I've heard about people getting charged extra for their suitcases.
Covarrubias was beautiful, can't wait to go back!

I have to say that we enjoyed Brisas Covarrubias. I was worried when I read the reviews about the water problems and the lack of wine, but we were fine. I packed a small collapsible water carrier and saved a bit of water when it was running. We also picked up a few bottles of wine in the Duty Free shop at the airport on the way there. Thanks fellow reviewers for the heads up! We also picked up Watkins mosquito repellent, which worked fine when we remembered to use it.

Those issues dealt with, we were ready to enjoy the resort for what it did have.
Wonderful staff: The staff at Covarrubias are, for the most part, outstanding. There were a few exceptions, but we found the staff to be great. They would take the extra time and stop to chat for a few moments. There was some very helpful staff at the buffet. Carlos, who helped us with our luggage the first night, went out of his way to help us. The lady who worked in the club house and ensured everyone had clean towels every day always had time for a chat. The lady at the Cadeca was also very friendly.
Huge, clean rooms: I was in room 1228, it was clean, close to the lobby and buffet, had an unexpected view of the beach and a huge wrap around deck. There was a safe ($), large closet, bar fridge and lots of space.
Did I mention the Beach: This resort is isolated. It is a small resort, down a long road with a mangrove swamp all around (hence the mosquitoes). It is on a small bay so the beach is U shaped with the resort at the bottom of the U. There is not row after row of palapas like most other resorts, they are spread across a fairly large area, so you have a fair amount of privacy. We never had any trouble finding a palapa or chairs on the beach. We brought our snorkels and masks, but the coral wasn’t that great in front of the resort. There were guys who would take you out to better sites. There was also great scuba diving and fishing opportunities.
Entertainment: Kereya is a young band who plays a few times a week at the resort. They are worth donning the mosquito repellent for! The violin and guitar player will also play in the buffet and a la carte restaurant before their show in the evening, make sure you catch their show. They are terrific. There is also a band playing traditional Cuban music that is well worth a coating of insect repellent.
Massage: I couldn’t turn down the opportunity for a full massage at 16.00. I wish I would have done it earlier in my stay so that I could have had a few of them. I also did the mud face mask (I think it was 5.00 or 8.00) Be forewarned. It takes place right on the beach facing into the sun. If you can’t picture yourself on the beach with mud all over your face and people walking by - pass on it. Or, make sure you discuss other options before hand. Both were great, by the way.

Food: Well, it was what I would expect from a resort at this price. There was only one a la carte restaurant. We had the chicken and it was really good, both nights. The staff are hit or miss. They were great one night and not so great the second night we were there, but do go, for a nice change from the buffet.

Internet: Was not available when I tried to use it. I think it goes out quite often.

Yes, there is a problem with the water. It is usually on for a while in the morning, then off until about 5:30, so you have time to shower before the evening. Yes, they didn’t have wine for a few days-but did get some decent white wine after a couple of days. They said there was a problem all over Cuba especially with white wine. We found this to be true. In Varadero it was really difficult to find white wine in the stores. Yes, there are mosquitoes. Bring repellent-Watkins has been suggested here and seems to work. I found some at Costco and Mountain Equipment Co-op. Hordes of them didn’t chase us; it was more like they snuck up on us while we were doing other things. Yes, it is a few hours from the airport, limit your airport beers and use the washroom before getting on the bus and you should be ok.

Would I go to this resort again? Yes. There is a nice relaxed pace about the place. Everyone takes the time to stop for a chat or say hi. Other reviewers have mentioned the great vibe about the place. I would agree. It is a nice small resort that encourages interaction among staff and guests. We met some great new friends there and enjoyed the ambiance of the resort.

Our group of six stayed at Brisas Covarrubias from March 31st to April 7th and loved it! That being said, if you are high maintenance, a whiner, chronic complainer, or royalty you should stay somewhere else. This resort is very well priced for what it offers and the cheap whiners should remember that before they complain about every little thing!

The water was a slight inconvenience that you could work around. The De-salinization water treatment plant is waiting for a part that has to come from Italy so they are currently trucking water in and trying to limit the use with minimal impact to the guests. The water seemed to be shut off from around midnight to 6am (when most ppl sleep) and early afternoon? ( most ppl are at the beach or pool). Note to complainers – Please close your toilet lids and carry travel size hand sanitizer with you…problem solved.

Yes, the reviews on the bug bites are right, they are bad. My worst in 12 trips south (5 to Cuba). They are NOT bed bugs, mosquitos, and I don’t think they are sand fleas either as other reviews state. They are smaller than a black fly, size of a pepper flake and similar to “no see-ums” encountered in northern Ontario. My bites came at 3 times – morning coffee on the balcony, at night at pool bar and on balcony, and only a few during the day at the beach. We packed bug repellent and a citronella candle but didn’t start using it until day 4…too late! They seemed selective as 3 in our group of 6 (one of us from each couple) seemed to get bit while their spouse got no bites or only a few. Maybe some of us are sweeter??) lol

Even though the resort is in an isolated tourism area of Cuba there is lots to keep you busy…I wish we stayed the extra week!

•Free drinks all day at the Beach Bar and 24 hrs at the Pool Bar ?
•The beach is one of the top three I have seen in Cuba or the Caribbean.
•Snorkelling at the beach (free snorkel equip) or pay $12 to boat to another area to snorkel
•Miles of shoreline both ways to explore
•2 Hobbie Cats, kayaks, paddle boats, windsurfers on site
•8 Scooters to rent $25/day or $40/2days and this is a safe area, with limited traffic
•Weight room and tennis court…didn’t bother, we’re on vacay lol
•Internet room $6 per hr
•Various day trips (friends we met did a 1day dolphin swim/cigar factory tour)
•Peurto Padre (45 min) Las Tunas (1hr 15) and other beaches/communities to explore
•Apparently deep sea fishing is much cheaper and better here than other areas of Cuba
•Kids club if you have wee ones
•Pig roast on a close by beach which you can purchase if not inc. with your booking ..unfortunately it was held the day before we asked so we missed out
•Nightly entertainment shows – better than some other Cuban resorts we have been at
•Disco – same as other resorts, can be good if you get a group to go
•Free drinks all day at the Beach Bar and 24 hrs at the Pool Bar ?

Tips and things we liked:

•Kenia (Sales Director) and Ilianna (Guest Services) are both great! So are all the staff really.
•Caffe Latte’s are excellent – took our mugs to the bar each morning (2 per mug) and back to the room to enjoy them from the balcony.
•Don’t be cheap! Go to the store and buy water/ pop/beer for your room fridge. It is not expensive at all
•Beach bar has great food “ham” burgers, fries and cheese pizza ( they will add ham/pineapple/onions/more cheese) if you ask nicely. There is a menu with a few limited choices for lunch but we were always happy with the burgers and pizza
•The staff are great all over the resort and try their best to please people….even the whiney ones!
•Don’t forget the bug spray with Deet! They did do a smokey fog spray for bugs late in the afternoons….I’m sure someone will complain about that
•Take a mini flashlight for nightime and possible power outages ?
•If you take clothes/toys/makeup to give away, why not also surprise the people behind the scenes like the cooks, office staff, accounting, etc. These people make the standard $40/month with no tips or extras while maids/bartenders (who we also always tip) make $20/month + tips. I went into the kitchen through the loading dock out back and took t-shirts, hats etc and they were all very happy with the surprise gifts. We also gave the maintenance man who fixed our safe and vanity light 2 CUC and a ball hat which made his day.
•The pool was very clean ... unlike what a few reviews said and we saw staff cleaning it daily
•No shortage of loungers at the beach or pool (though some at the beach could be refreshed)
•The 2 hour bus ride to and from the airport is very interesting as you go through many small communities and see a glimpse of authentic Cuban life on the way.
•The best Cuban meal we have had in Puerto Padre at “Paladar Sol Caribe” a small family restaurant in the back yard of a home 3 blocks North of the main street…worth seeking out!

Things the resort could work on:

•Remove the patio stones on the way to the beach bar as someone not paying attention could trip and hurt themselves.
•A few of the boards in the beach bar floor are very spongy and could be replaced
•Ashtrays at 5 or 6 spots along the walkways to the rooms would be nice
•Bathrooms by lobby and pool bar should be cleaned more regularly as these are high use.
•Each buffet food station should have labels for the food items in English/French/Spanish
•Minor maintenance to rooms such as the hole in our shower door which had plastic taped over it but still leaked slightly and should be replaced
•We slept in the bed closest to the balcony and the view and the mattress did have a pokey spring so we just moved the beds and slept in the bed that gets less use and it was fine

If you read past the crap in some of the reviews and note how many people are return visitors, you will find what we found … A great vacation at a great price in the middle of nowhere at a rustic resort with a fantastic beach, excellent staff, a more than adequate variety of food and drinks, a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in. We made many new friends, both Cuban and Canadian. If you read this Kenny & Kim (Hamilton) send us a msg, Robin & Marcella (Sudbury) Neil (Sarnia), and Smashley and Cassandra.

There are so many places to go in the Caribbean, but we WILL be returning to Brisas Covarrubias at some point !! The beach, the price, the location, and the people have us sold! Thanks again to Kenia and Illianna from the resort :) Cheers! Ron & Margie Burrell rm 3326
