“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2008

We stayed at the Almyra for a week, and would definitely recommend it!. The rooms are clean and comfortable, as is the rest of the hotel. The decor is light and airy but also very welcoming and comfortable. The views are great, the pool looks over the pine trees out to the sea. The pool is just the right temperature and is also very clean and there are just enough loungers for the guests, however they are quite close together so you are never too far from your neighbour. The breakfasts were fine, simple but adequate, the yoghurt and honey were delicious. It's 10 minute walk to the nearest beach and about 15 minutes downhill to the harbour, however there is now a shuttle service at various times to ferry you up and down the hill which is very handy especially after a few cocktails. The beaches are fine, pebbly but fine and the sea is gorgeous, very warm and very clear! There are lots of bars and restaurants on the harbour, some were over-priced so check the menus before you go in. I personally liked Lagoudera 2, which was towards the far end of the harbour, very friendly service and very good food. The food at Tassia's was also very good, however the service was a bit dismissive

  • Liked — Friendly, clean, comfortable
  • Disliked — Quite along way from town, lots of wasps, but they were all over Fiscardo

We have just returned from a week at the Almyra Hotel. It was so lovely that it was hard to drag ourselves away to visit the rest of the island. The people who worked there were nice, the rooms were clean, the food was nice and the weather was great. I have read a couple of bad reviews from others but they must of stayed in some pretty amazing places in the past as this one would be pretty hard to beat.

We went to Kefalonia at the end of June beginning of July 08 and stayed at the Almyra Hotel. The Exclusive Escapes brochure described it as Fiscado’s finest boutique hotel, and a very special place that comes with their highest recommendation.

I suppose it depends what you mean by finest, boutique and highest recommendation. If you mean it is chic, architecturally charming, would appeal to discriminating consumers seeking luxurious surroundings, then I don’t think it came anywhere near that description.

In my opinion, it is a fairly ordinary hotel in a building designed for practical use and offering no-frills but comfortable accommodation. The bedrooms do vary so perhaps we were just unlucky to get the utilitarian one. Unfortunately, the hotel description omitted to mention that you do not flush away loo paper - so don’t have a hot curry the night before because you won’t see the back of it that easily!

The brochure also says that: “Lunch, snacks and afternoon tea are served throughout the day …..” We did try to order a few sandwiches in the afternoon but were told they were not available and so we settled for a packet of crisps – well I suppose you could say that constitutes a snack, but this is Fiscado’s finest boutique hotel and comes with the highest recommendation!

Perhaps a trip to the port in the hotel mini-bus shuttle service that operates “Throughout the day into the evening from 10:00 to 23:00 seven days weekly”, would do the trick. Well you would be wrong, because the mini-bus does not operate throughout the day. It goes to the port four times a day. So why not simply say so in the brochure and then we won’t misunderstand the phrase ‘throughout the day’?

While we were waiting for the evening mini-bus we decide to retire to the room, relax, be philosophical and watch a DVD. Oh no we didn’t. You see despite the brochure saying that the property features satellite TV/DVD (please bring your own selection), we completely misunderstood.

I think the description really did mean that if you want to watch a DVD in your room you have to bring your own machine - although happily there was a TV – but there were no chairs in the room to sit on which might have made it a little more comfy. Speaking of which linen and towels are changed only every three or four days – an environment thing I know but this is Fiscado’s finest boutique hotel.

Bedroom balconies offer no privacy with transparent trellis-style dividers between your fellow guests. So if you don’t wish to stare at you neighbour or join in their conversation it’s best to keep off the balcony.

If you like sitting by the pool sunbathing – make sure you get there early because there are only 10 sunshades and 24 sunbeds to serve a hotel with 27 double rooms.

Oh, and the hotel is locked at midnight and your key is placed in your room door. So if you don’t turn into a pumpkin because you missed the last bus you never know who might be waiting for you in your room.

However, the staff were very pleasant and keen to be of assistance even if they were not always immediately available as multitasking was very much the norm.

I think Exclusive Escapes need to have another look at how they describe the Almyra Hotel.

  • Liked — Staff very helpful
  • Disliked — Not what we expected in brochure - not a boutique hotel - nothing special about it.

Have just returned from two weeks at the Almyra Hotel - this is described as a boutique hotel and available only through Exclusive Escapes. The hotel is not even close to being a boutique hotel, and nor is in exclusive. Although the staff and owners are very friendly - the fact is this is basic accomodation with no extras - it felt rather like staying self-catering but without facilities. Bedrooms and bathrooms are small and basic - with the odd broken drawer and shower enclosure and the balconies are small with absolutely no privacy at all. The pool and its surrounding area is also small and in need of updating with enough sunbeds to cater for less than half the guests and even fewer sunshades. There is no room service, and indeed no food at all available outside of breakfast and lunch time. Breakfast is basic, and the lunch menu limited.

If this hotel had been rated by a company such as Thomson's as 'small and friendly two to three star' hotel (and priced accordingly), I'd have been pleased but rating it as exclusive and a boutique hotel is a grossly misleading.

On the plus side - Fiscardo is lovely. Pricey (1 small coffee = 4 euros, club sandwich = £9 euros), and isolated - but a lovely harbour. Hire a boat to see it at its best - and you need a car.

  • Liked — Friendly staff and owner
  • Disliked — Lack of facilites and overall poor standard of hotel and accomodation.

The transfer from the airport takes an hour and a half by coach. The journey views are spectacular, sit on the left for a glittering view of the sea, beaches and cliffs, sit on the right to view the mountains. I do not normally get travel sick but on both transfers I was very nauseated. (This didn't happen when i hired a car)

The Almyra Hotel is a fifteen minute walk away from the centre of Fiscardo (or 2 minute 5 euro taxi ride). It sits a few hundred metres above sea level and has an impressive panorama of the sea, fiscardo, Ithaka and a rather ugly electricity pylon.

The hotel is very clean, feels new and is very well maintained. There is a large veranda. A very pleasant freshwater pool with a shallow end and a deep end of approx 9'. The hotel lacks a garden area and I thought the hardscaping could be softned with more planting. Another annoyance were the squadrons of wasps that buzzed in when eating or drinking outside during daylight hours (avoid sugary drinks!) - strangely there wasn't a single mosquito.

The rooms are typically Greek - white and basic although there were some real plus points:
-free tea and coffee making facilities (bring a few tea bags and milk sachets if you are English and get through more than two a day each)
-Satelite TV available through a wall mounted TV (4:3 aspect ratio) that included three English language News CHannels CNN, BBC World and SKY News - the reception of these channels were crisp. The TV allows a mono AV in (For the video camera playback)
-two spare power sockets
-Well stocked fridge with water, booze and soft drinks - reasonably priced
-Wall mounted hairdryer (apparently this is a great plus)
-Most rooms had a bath(ours had a shower)
-Hot water 24/7 - as far as I could tell
-Lots of storage space
-Maid was very thorough
-balcony or veranda with outside chairs
-24/7 air conditioning

Breakfast is served 8 - 10, it is the usual hotel breakfast, cheese, salad, cold meats, cereal, the odd omelete and orange juice served in strangely small glasses

Lunch is a la carte and very nice.

Dinner is only available on a few occasions (most guests eat out)
The weekly BBQ was very good.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is apparently owned by a Greek couple, one of whom is a celebrity chef!

Its worth mentioning that all the guests were middle aged British tourists mean age approx 50 yrs. All appeared to be couples and our group of four 30 year olds stuck out like a sore thumb! - The guests were all friendly but I wouldn't go here as a singleton personally.

The Bar stops serving at 01:00 which on occasion was a little early.

There are several excursions (or 'experiences' as our rep called them) in the area worth doing. Hiring a motor boat and visiting all the bays in the area was great fun. (Makis Boats I think it was called)

A British Marine Biologist runs a eco tour - visit a few bays in the area on his motor yacht, snorkelling, lots of talk and wildlife demonstration. He did an incredible free dive down to the sea floor, picked up an octopus and put it in a tank on the boat. More incredibly he later dived down picked up what appeared to be an ancient broken urn (in an area that the Greek ministry of antiquity is planning an expedition) and then dropped into deeper water so no one else could nab it. (I have it all on video). I think his name was Jones - I would recommend that day out - his boat moors just next to the motor boat hire. Car hire allows you to see the Island - (the most beautiful of the eight Greek islands I have been to so far), Just drive slowly, when you see the roads, the tightness of the corners, the precipitous drops you'll understand.

All in all it was a great weeks Holiday. Nice hotel, Fiscardo is an unusually attractive harbour based small town, Kefalonia is a dramatic Island. Recommend it? YES, Would I go again? NO on to the next greek Island for us!

PS My videos of the snorkelling are really good and would happily upload them if TripAdvisor had a facility (Plus videos of the Hotel). I might put them on YouTube.

We had a wonderful trip to this hotel a few days ago with Exclusive Escapes. We went early in the season when prices are reasonable. The staff were wonderful at the hotel and their relaxed style suited us. We thought the food at breakfast and lunch was excellent.Fresh coffee and fresh orange juice are a 'must' for me. The hotel felt very new and all the furniture in the public areas was stylish and beautifully clean. The pool bar was always open. We liked the cocktails!! Every member of staff was lovely and welcoming. The shuttle bus driver was so kind and attentive to my elderly mother that I relaxed completely. There was a slope to the pool so she was able to access this without using the steps. The lift in the hotel to our rooms was so useful for some one with disabilities. We were so lucky with the weather and the other guests! I drove a car for three days and found there was almost no other traffic. The roads were very good and I felt so pleased with myself for being independent.Fiscardo was perfect for our special needs on this trip. I was happy paying more for food and drink in such beautiful bars and restaurants. Some resorts on Cephalonia are tacky but Fiscardo is very 'swish', as is Assos.

  • Liked — The spacious terraces, views and lovely lounge.
  • Disliked — The a/c was not working--too early in the season they said. The very hard beds.

We enjoyed our stay at the Almyra and the views from the terrace and a number of the rooms are fantastic.

Make sure you check out the images and panoramic videos on the Exclusive Escapes website to make sure you select the best available room – especially if you are staying in a standard room as the views do vary.

We found the staff at the hotel to all be very friendly and the hotel was always clean.

The breakfast was basic but perfectly adequate. In the evenings the restaurant was only open for two nights a week, one of which was BBQ night, fine for us as we were quite happy to go down to the harbour each night, but perhaps not so suitable for those who prefer to base their holiday around the hotel.

The walk down to the harbour took about 10-15 minutes and was well worth the visit each day. In fact, although the hotel was perfectly fine and the views great, we did miss being part of the hustle and bustle of the harbour.

This is a relatively new hotel and in my opinion therefore lacked any traditional Greek charm. Although this was partly made up for by the friendly staff, I think we would definitely try and stay down by the harbour on our next visit.

This brings me on to Fiscardo itself – the mention of our next visit should perhaps be an indicator of how much we enjoyed our stay. The harbour with its beautiful buildings and the whole ambience of the place, all make for wonderful holiday. The restaurants along the waterfront are a great place to stop for some food and drink, day or night, and the relaxed atmosphere means you can take your time to enjoy the wonderful food.

The cost of eating out does soon mount up, especially when you are eating in the day and evening. We loved eating out in the evening but I think we would consider self-catering on our next visit just to keep the lunch time costs down.

While I’m on the subject of food, make sure you check out the Panorama Taverna half way down the hill to the harbour. The owner is a real character and a fantastic cook – a great place to sample some traditional Greek Cuisine.

Pros:
Nice views
Very clean
Friendly Staff
Swimming Pool

Cons:
Modern hotel – lacked charm of many harbour properties
Limited evening food
Those with walking difficulties may find the uphill walk difficult
Away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour
