We're just back from a week at the Porto Galini Hotel and would definitely recommend this hotel. We booked with friends through Olympic Holidays on a half board basis. They had a fabulous family room (169) and we had interconnecting Superior rooms (94/95) with sea view. Both were very comfortable with adequate bathrooms kept scrupulously clean. We were just up from the restaurant which made it easy getting back and forth to the pools and the beach. Room 169 is above reception and there are 72 steps plus a lift to get to it but it does have the most fabulous view. The buffet had a range of food, well cooked and presented, and the staff were always polite and friendly.
The small beach is stone and rock but the water is beautifully clear and if you take beach shoes it's not a problem. Water inflatables are useful too as the water gets deep quickly but the swimming area is marked off and feels very safe. The Lifeguard was very professional and took his job seriously, making sure we wore buoyancy aids for sailing, windsurfing or kyacking, and showing us where we could go in the bay. The hotel has a couple of Pico's and one windsurfer, so don't expect a lot of water sports. For the more experienced you'll need a trip to Vasiliki at the southern end of the island (45 minutes by bus).
There are two pools with lots of sun loungers and parasols. The hotel has a policy of not bagging your space with towels - although I noticed many people disregarded this. There were a wide range of nationalities of which approximately 20% were British. We were very impressed by the children's behaviour and how quiet the resort was. Our teenage daughter's enjoyed their stay as they were with a friend, but I'm not sure there would have been enough to do if they were on their own. There is a games room but most of the activities you have to pay for. It's also worth noting that on half board you have to pay for drinks (other than a bottle of water and coffee with breakfast) and there is no meal on the plane (Thomas Cook serves everyone else and tells you that you can buy one for £8 if there are any left!).
A bus passes the hotel to get to the closest town of Nidri or you can take a taxi for 8 Euros. Nidri is a lively town with lots of shops and restaurants and you can get ferries to the other islands.
