“The best accommodation we've stayed at in Greece ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

We spent a week at these apartments and overall had a fantastic holiday. They are very well run, kept spotlessly clean and have a fantastic restaurant/pool bar. The food was excellent. We had 2 days without hot water but as the weather was so hot, I actually found the cold showers quite refreshing!

We had a studio apartment. Although it was one room, it was split level - with the bedroom and bathroom as you walked through the door and then down 2 steps to a kitchen area - this made it feel spacious and airy. The free air-con and safe were great. I've been to other places in Greece where you have to pay for air-con which then turns out to be a portable fan! This was a proper air-con unit above the patio doors - it is regulated by reception and we found the setting to be just right.

We had a great view from our balcony towards the sea. The only real drawback with our apartment (room 308) was that it had the tiniest balcony I've ever seen. Looking at our neighbour's balcony and even the balcony below us, they had much larger balconies so we definitely drew the short straw in that respect! We didn't sit out too much during the week though as we always stayed on the beach until around 7pm.

We didn't experience any noise from the pool bar despite being about 60 seconds walk from it.

The location of Hermes is superb and we walked to several beaches. Kolios Beach was our favourite and Nostos was great for using the water taxi into Skiathos Town. The bus service was brilliant, although be aware that at certain times of the day, they do get packed. We didn't use a taxi once (other than the water taxi).

We didn't book any excursions through our Thomson rep as we preferred to go on boat trips with fewer people so booked independently. However, the people we met who did go on the Thomson trips did enjoy themselves.

Skiathos is definitely the most beautiful Greek Island I've visited to date and the one that I'm most likely to return to. Skiathos Town is so pretty with some beautiful yachts in the port. It has quite a cosmopolitan feel to it. We were pleasantly surprised by food and drink prices in the town. Great shops too!

I would stay in Hermes again. The steep slope from the road up to the apartments would make it very difficult for people with mobility problems.

I usually go on about this, that and the other, droning on about, how this wasn't right and that was rubbish etc, but I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the Hermes.
(OK one thing, It's too far for me to visit at the weekend)
My Wife and I usually like to visit different holiday venues, as there's plenty to see and experience in this small planet we call home.

However, this August was our third year in succession, not only on Skiathos, but at the Hermes Apartments. This must say something.

2009, 2010, 2011 and guess what, wev'e already booked to go back in 2012.

What a wonderful Island, What a wonderful Venue.

The staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is excellent, the pool bar area is clean and tidy, the rooms are also well maintained.
Bus stop 13 is 50 yards away, with buses every 20 minutes taking you from one side of the island to the other.
I wouldn't be surprised if we are not back there in 2013 as well.
Top marks to the owner and staff.

Just returned on 12 August from two weeks at the Hermes. As our 16 year old daughter said...'it has been the best holiday ever'! '. Before we went I read a large number of reviews to see what we had let ourselves in for! To be honest I don't know how anyone could have reason to complain.

We travelled as a family: Mum, Dad, daughter, Nan and Pop and stayed in 2 studio apartments. Having been to Greece several times we were very impressed by the standard of accommodation, In Greece you expect basic but this was well above average. Free air conditioning and safe a bonus! The bed linen and towels were changed every couple of days and room cleaned too, loo roll provided, excellent self catering facilities if required although we only had breakfast in the studio as the on site restaurant was superb! We only ate elsewhere 2 nights of the 14 and to be honest we were glad to return. Denise, George and Mark in the bar/restaurant were excellent hosts and made us feel really welcome. The food was absolutely amazing and good value with huge portions! As everyone has said previously; garlic bread to die for and definately have the Beef Ragu! The quiz night( great fun) and Saturday night singer were lovely without being too touristy!

The pool is lovely but small and there are only 4 large umbrellas. I was quite concerned about this before we went as we are not great sun worshippers. However there is no need to sit around the pool as the beaches are so close and gorgeous. Most people seemed to go to the beach as they are right on the doorstep. Two Sunbeds and an umbrella are 8 euros to hire. We didn't bother as we bought our own from the supermarket which was around 10 euros and we had taken our beach mats with us!

The apartment location was great, right next to bus stop 13. The 'hill' is nothing unless you have real mobility problems - my parents are late 70's and didn't have a problem. We did the Thomson Sporades Trip which we felt was good value for money and really enjoyed ourselves. Yes there were quite a few people on board, but it was as we expected. The lunch was huge as we got a 3 course meal!!! I have read that a few people have recommended you book independently in the port but it was easier for us to book direct with the rep. Of the rep, Lorna, she was delightful and always available to help if required.

There is a supermarket right next to the Hermes which is well stocked. We felt the prices were what we expected to pay: Large bag of Lay's crisps, our daughter's favourites 1.50 euros. They also have a great selection of fresh fruit and bread!

We recommend you take the water taxi from Nostos beach to Skiathos town which was 3 euros each. A lovely trip! We also went into Skiathos town one night on the bus to do some shopping and came back on the water taxi - last return trip from the old port 10.20pm to Nostos. It was a nice starlight journey home! One tip - get the early bus into town if you fancy shopping in the evening as they get extremely busy with the Greeks coming back home after a day on the beach. We aimed to get the 8.45pm bus but had to wait 1/2 hour to get on a bus that wasn't full!!!!

One trip you must take is to see the planes take off and land at Skiathos airport. It was fab. They come in so low that you want to duck!!! Get the bus to Zero and walk left from the bus stop. You won't be disappointed. There is also a taverna there which does lovely lunches.

Other things to do: Walk around the headland, and as someone else has previously said go from bus stop 12 to 13 as it's less steep. Fabulous views and amazing villas to see! We also did the usual tourist thing: went to see 'Mamma Mia' at the open air cinema. It was really good fun! We took a trip to Koukanaries beach, bus stop 26 but were disappointed as it was so busy and you were packed together like sardines on the beach. Great if you like water sports though as my husband and daughter took a ride on the wake boarding which they thoroughly enjoyed. We however prefer the quieter beaches which are less touristy.

Someone previously has mentioned that wasps were a problem but we didn't think so! Mozzies are and you will definately need some protection. We, as usual, took Avon skin so soft oil spray which is the best protection ever and were only bitten a couple of times. From the look of some people they were like pin cushions! One big problem though was sea urchins. I would recommend that you take beach pumps to swim in. My dad unfortunately stood on one and I had to dig them out of his foot. A greek gentleman recommended that you cover the wound with any kind of oil and they will pop out of their own accord!! We saw several children who were in agony after swimming bare footed!! Don't be put off though, if you are in a sandy srea of the beach away from the rocks you will probably be fine!

On a last note Chryssia - I think that's how it's spelt - who owns the complex was very helpful. The electricity tripped one night but she came straight around to sort it! No problems whatsoever and very friendly!

We have been so impressed with our holiday that we have booked again for next year and can't wait to get back! Thankyou 'Hermes'!

Skiathos is a beautiful island and the Hermes apartments were well located for walking access to 3/4 beaches and bus stop 13 right outside to venture further afield. Accommodation compact but included all amenities and no additional charge for safe or air conditioning. Staff all very welcoming and the food at the Hermes poolside taverna is excellent and as reasonable as any where else, we ended up dining here 10 out of 14 nights as we were on a budget and were never disappointed. A mix of people staying at the Hermes, all English(at the time we were there) and all friendly; we have made some lifelong friends and have already recommended this holiday to family and friends back home. Denise, Mark and George are excellent hosts and Chrissa the owner is on site and ensures everything runs smoothly.Live music on once a week and the quiz night is not to be missed-absolute riot of fun. I went as a single parent with 2 teenage children and we all had one of the best holidays ever!

Just having returned from Hermes on a Thompson holiday I had a marvellous holiday, very relaxing. Our luggage was taken from the airport by truck and we collected it on arrival outside on the slope of the apartments. Regarding the accommodation - it was up a short but very steep slope - no good for mobility problems ! When we arrived there was no one around the reception and eventually a grumpy barman came and allocated the rooms. We had to then walk up another steep slope and up a and down a selection of steps till we came to the room. We had a top floor room with a view to the west from the balcony. The room was lovely and spoltessly clean on arrival. The kitchen had a grill/oven, 2 rings kettle toaster and large fridge freezer, tea towel, and sufficient pans and cutlery and crockery. Everything was clean. Bathroom clean towels were a bit hard but both bath and hand. Plenty of storage with wardrobe dressing table and bedside cabinate.
We soon realised though that sleeping would be a problem - the beds were like boards - very narrow and exceptionally hard and so were the pillows !!! and the noise from the bar area around the pool during the evening and through the night - one night till 2.30 was very loud. People were jumping into the pool and screaming and although the staff were aound no attempt was made to stop them. Music was played loudly by the pool from about 9am which was totally uneccessary and often on repeat ! .On the day of departure we had to be out of the room by 10am our flight was at 3pm - leave the luggage at the top of the slope to be collected by the truck at 11.40. We were at the airport checked in and waiting in the lounge by 12.15am !! FAR TOO EARLY TO BE LEAVING ! The location was good. Near Kolios beach which we found to be very peaceful and good for swimming - Go to Vrom.. beach for noise and partying and pole dancing !!As for Skiathos itself it is lovely but there is only the town and little hamlets so for a promenade after dinner you need to get the bus to town. The people are very friendly and helpful. The weather was fab and the scenery the same. Buses only run arond the south of the island and you ask for your stop by the number which is very easy !.60 euro to get to Skiathos town one way. Maybe to get to the other parts you would need to hire a car, although when the rep suggested we may go to the dog sanctuary to take one of the strays for a walk; alarm bells started to ring in my head suggesting there was not much to see on the island!! We did the Island Hopper trip 49 euro - a full day visiting Skopelos and Alonisos but another 4 euro for a bus up to the old town (no mention by the rep) but it was worth it. You may need to take drinks as nothing was included and we were out for about 8 hours or so. All in all a lovely holiday and I may go back to Skiathos

Our first holiday to Skiathos and am sure it won't be the last, like so many others we will return as it was one of the nicest places we have ever been to!. Stayed with my husband and 16 year old daughter, Had a room on the first floor which initially I was a little disapointed with as had requested one on the top floor, and this one faced the road, but its getting to be a busy time of year so its first come first served I guess. Room was basic, well equiped and clean, nice balcony to sit and have breakfast on.
We explored most of the island during our 10 day stay and decided the area where the Hermes is located is probably the best place to be as it is so central for the beautiful town or the beaches at the other end, served by the brilliant bus service. However you could just stay around the peninsula as great selection of quiet unspolit beaches, lovely walking (if you get up early before it gets too hot!) and fantastic choice of restaurants.
It would be easy just to stay and eat at the Hermes as the food was excellent, and the service from the staff, Denise and George outstanding, such lovely people who work so hard to make everyone very welcome. However do go and eat elsewhere too as so many great places to try. Particuarly liked Taverna Stathis over the road, and the Taverna at Kanapitsa beach. Restaurant on Vromolimnos beach was lovely but got very busy on our last day and the service was poor
The not so good bits were the noise at Hermes during the early hours from other loud partying guests, so a hot tip is to take earplugs which we did and slept well with those! Also an airconditioning unit over my bed which dripped water on my head, which was never fixed, but hey we were in paradise so a small discomfort really, I just moved the bed away from the wall.
So many highlights, including sunset at Eleni beach and Banana beach, a must do. The wonderful local people who are so special, exploring the town and boat trips around the island and to skopelos, seeing dolphins on the way home! Watching Mama Mia at the open air cinema on our last night was a wonderful end to a very memorable holiday...enjoy!

Room Tip: Request room on the top floor

Just got back from Hermes and had a great week. Most of the thanks go to Denise, Mark and George for keeping us entertained in the evening.

The rooms are basic, but clean, beds were mostly comfotable. I agree with previous comments abot the air con, but at least it was free! Ours leaked the whole time and I was rained on in bed but it wasn't too much of an issue.

The food was actually some of the best we had. At least they gave us salad! Garlic bread with cheese appears to be a favourite for all and we agreed. And it was probably the best priced food we saw all week.

We didn't use the pool as we were beach bums (who wouldn't be in Skiathos?!) but it looked OK, if a little too deep for such a small pool- you could really only stand at one end.

Evenings were very relaxed, everyone very friendly, and the Wednesday quiz was good fun. If I go back to Skiathos I'd have no hesitation booking again.
