Just arrived back from a very relaxing 2 week break in Thassos at The Four Seasons Hotel.
Firstly before we booked, we were so impressed with the feedback from other tripadvisor members that it was almost too good to be true.
Kath and George need no explaining whatsoever, just read all the reviews!! How can 2 people and a very small team work so hard at keeping everyone happy and allowing for such a wonderful holiday..Enough said!!
As explained breakfast is a good choice of cooked and continental style and lots of it.
While at breakfast Kath gives you the dinner choices for that evening, 4 in total including a veggie option and while some people may say this is strange, it makes perfect sense to avoid a mass buffet of sub-standard food that you maybe too late to sample anyway, whereas this means your choice is cooked to a very high standard and more personal. I can honestly say I did not have one bad meal in 14 days.
The Hotel is in lovely pine woods however only a short walk to 2 very good beaches. To the right towards Thassos Town is Papilamani which is small but has a great taverna and good safe swimming. The second is to the left away from Thassos Town and about a good 15 minute walk just before bend in the road and has a marble statue at the entrance, this beach is lovely and wide with..be careful very hot sand and for the cost of a drink plenty of sunbeds, also very safe swimming. Plus if you go to this beach exit hotel at far end away from pool bar and you cut off a big chunk of your walk.
The Hotel has all rooms facing towards the sea however only the second floor top rooms enable this. The only very small negative was we were allocated a ground floor room which despite being large comfortable and clean, would have prefered an upper floor room. The advantage this type of room has is a very large patio/terrace compared to upper rooms.
The pool is not massive but more than adequate for number of people and you can always get a sunbed and shade, and this was middle of July!! I think a lot of people do like going to the beach more than pool. Yes music is played during the day and while eating however always at a low level that does not prevent relaxing conversation, I thought the music was very much to my taste but may not suit teenage children, as perhaps this hotel may not as even Thassos Town only becomes lively in the evening, and in a Greek way.
On a Wednesday Kath runs a quiz night after dinner and to be honest would not usually be my cup of tea however it is great fun, well constructed and a great way to interact with other people.
Team Monkfish did win the second week of our stay :-)
Thassos as an Island is very much unspoilt and what I would imagine Greece to be like 20 years ago. We have been to lots of Greek Islands and I would say this is one of my favourites!
Do hire a car and if possible pay for a Jeep as if you want to discover stunning villages and breathtaking scenery you will need 4 wheel drive.
If you were to go into Thassos Town you could maybe get a very good deal however the hotel uses Europcar and for 4 days hire plus complete cover and second driver 200 Euros.
We toured the Island, and would say do go up the mountain, drive slowly and don't be put off if the road seems rough and no cars in sight as it will lead to lovely places.
Last top tip, when you land as we did from Gatwick you have a 30 minute ferry ride over to Thassos from the mainland. The time was about 1-2pm and very hot!! It takes about 30 mins to load everyone on to the boat and plus slowly getting off in total takes about at least an hour, so apply sun cream as you may get caught out.
In summery, Thassos is a stunning island and for couples especially The Four Seasons cannot be more highly recomended... You wont be dissapointed.
Thanks Kath and George.
As mentioned an upper floor room out of choice
