We had heard complimentary reviews about this restaurant from our fellow tourists and so made the trek up there one afternoon to scope it out. We read the menu outside and being from a family of passionate cooks and foodies, were really excited to try it out. We booked a table and were really looking forward to a special evening. After walking up the many steps in our best attire, we were in fact 15 minutes early for our table (we left enough time as I was with my parents, both nearly 70) only to be told that we could not come in until our table was ready and could we basically go away and come back. Not the greatest welcome I have ever had to say the least! Therefore we went away (luckily there is a bench up by the clock tower) and waited until our allotted time before returning. I immediately noted that all the other diners were British, not that this is is a bad thing but I did wonder - do Greek people ever come here? Being in Greece and all.
As this was going to be our "special evening", as we knew the restaurant was higher priced than others in Skiathos Town and was one of the last evenings of our holiday, we all ordered a starter.
This was the highlight of the meal! My mum ordered the blue cheese and chilli jam tart which was delightful. Crisp, thin pastry and a beautifully flavoured filling, it was perfect and we all had food envy after trying a bit. My dad had goats cheese in tomato sauce which he said was "nice" and I had the 5-spiced crispy chicken, which was, well, crispy (and dry).
This is where it all went downhill. Both my parents ordered the chicken stuffed with mushrooms as they had not had much chicken during the holiday so thought it would be a nice change. Wrong. When it came, it was so dry and overcooked they could barely cut through the ends and the filling was very salty. We cook with salt so are not part of the salt police, but it was too much. I told them that if they were not happy they should tell the waitress as €14 for chicken was not cheap. They did tell the waitress and she was very apologetic and offered them an alternative which is totally what I would expect.
I had ordered the chilli and herb "crusted" lamb chops. The crust was in fact a marinade, although I will not dwell on this as it was a very tasty marinade, however the chops themselves were totally overcooked and tough. Not what I would expect from a restaurant of this calibre. I would expect the chops to be juicy and pink, not incinerated. My biggest regret is that I did not tell the waitress this when my parents complained, I did the typically British thing and kept my mouth shut.
So what happened next? I was left to eat my main meal alone while my parents sat and watched and waited for thier new main course, which by the time they arrived, I had finished and had to sit and watch them eat. Now call me fussy, but from a restaurant that prices itself higher than the other places in town, therefore encouraging a better class of people, I would have 100% expected them to also take my meal away and replace it. If I wanted to dine alone, I would have. I had come to enjoy a lovely evening "dining" with my parents. This thought did not occur to the staff!
Once the new meals came for my parents, the shine had worn off the evening. Their initial hunger had worn off them and so they ate what they could of the new meals, which might I add were not much better. Dad had the same dry, tough lamb chops as me and mum had salmon.
When we had finished, all we wanted to do was leave as the evening had been ruined. When the waitress came to clear the tables we told her how we felt to be told "well nobody has EVER complained before" - so in other words, it's you with the problem not us!! How lovely and hospitable. Yes, there are many great reviews for this place, maybe we got them on a bad day, maybe other diners eat at places like Toby Carvery at home and think that's great - who knows. The point is we were not happy and yet were made to feel like we were in the wrong. Not great customer service.
Finally to add insult to injury, when the bill came, not only had we been charged for all the meals - if you ask me my parents' should have been knocked off the bill - but we had been charged for the salmon and lamb that they had to order under duress because the chicken was so terrible and these dishes were €2 each more expensive than the chicken!!! I was totally taken aback by this! We were fully prepared to pay the extra for a lovely meal in a lovely setting - but as it happens, it didn't work out that way for us and then to be charged extra for meals that they had to order because the chicken was cooked so terribly was an outrage!
To finish the evening off, we paid and left and surprise, surprise, there was not one member of staff to see us out, say have a nice evening, thanks for coming, sorry you had such a disappointing evening! Shocking!
To sum it up, it was dealt with very badly and I for one will not be returning here when I go back to Skiathos. There are much better restaurants with MUCH better food and customer service on the island that does not make the walk and views up here worthwhile.
As the saying goes, when in Greece....
