“Great Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

We stayed in late May / early June, the first couple of days were fairly quiet and the lack of competition for sunbeds was refreshing. However, as everyday passed it got busier and busier, it is particularly well set up for kids and there were loads of them! The rooms were ok if a little basic and the air conditioning was old and noisy. The whole hotel was always clean and the food was great with plenty of choice. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful; in fact there is very little wrong with this hotel if you bear in mind that its 3 star.

Room Tip: If you want a good view from your room, ask for a high floor. The sun beds are all very close toge...

My husband, myself, our daughter, her husband & three children, have just come back 11 June from a week at the Hotel Cartago, we are seasoned travellers and I must say it was the best hotel we have ever stayed in, I was a bit worried as this hotel is 3* rating and we always book 4*, but i shouldnt have worried, the hotel was beautiful, so clean and the facilities were amazing. The food was so good, there was nothing about it that i could have improved on. The staff were just lovely, I couldnt recommend it enough. We will definately book it for next year. Thanks Cartago for making our holiday unforgetable

We went for a week at the start of the season and found the lack of guests eerie but lovely as it was so quiet. We can not fault anything about our stay, ok there wasn't a great choice on the food but we ate well and everything served was well cooked and very tasty. Our room was cleaned daily and the whole hotel was cleaned to an excellent standard. We preferred to have a drink in the lobby bar on the 8th floor as we had our drinks served in glasses, Bruno the bar and restaurant manager was very friendly and always made our drinks just perfect the barmaid was also excellent, two members of staff who are an asset to the Hotel. The animation team are very good at getting people to take part in games, lol. Overall all the staff were very helpful and we will visit again. We enjoyed our visit to the caves and walks on the cliff fab views.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor and had no problem with noise

Firstly I need to say that we were actually booked into the Galeon next door via Holidaynights.com to find it was closed, luckily the same this is part of the same complex so with little hassle we checked in here. Unfortunately there was no note on the Galeon saying you need to check in next door at the Cartago. The Galeon, Cartago and Club San Miguel are all part of the same complex and facilities are shared.
Check in was easy although our booking details said Galeon on they had our name down for the Cartago, the receptionist wasn't really friendly but efficient. Our room was large with a twin bed and double bed, decent size bathroom and nice size balcony with lovely sea view. The air conditioning looked a bit precarious (sort of hanging off the wall) but we didn't need to use it. The room was clean, the maid cleaned daily and gave fresh towels. There was a TV we didn't use (it worked we turned it on once there is only one english channel you have to pay per view for any more than that). a desk and chair and hairdryer.
The food was acceptable, all tasted nice but a limited choice compared with other 3 star all inclusives we have stayed in. Breakfast had standard full English, cereals, fruit, toast, yoghurt, contiental. Lunch we didn't go to the main hotel for so I can't comment on we used the snack bar "Western Saloon" who cooked fresh to order snacks such as hot dogs, burgers, chips and sandwiches which were all of ok quality. Dinner had a pasta dish, a meat dish, a fish dish, vegaterain option, salads and deserts (standard AI cakes, jelly, trifle (this I haven't seen before) etc). We went to the Chinese buffet which you had to book the night before for, the food was good and good selection. We also went to the Tapas bar were you ordered fresh tapas and drinks, this was very enjoyable. One nice feature of the bars was that they had put together a list of 12 cocktails to choose from AI which was nice as alot of places charge extra for cocktails.
Some brochures state there is a Mexican restaurant- due to the Galeon being closed this restaurant is closed.
There were 2 pools to use one for the Cartago and one for the Club San Miguel the second we used most. This had Jagguzi built in, little bridges and waterfalls and was a bit bigger than the one closer to the Cartago. The pool was clean fun to use and as we were out of high season for the most part quiet.
The beach was very easy to access as the hotel is built into the cliff you can take 2 lifts one goes as far a the main bar and pool for the Cartago the next goes down one floor to the Club San Miguel the beach is only 50m or so from the lift on the same floor- no steps or steep hills! We went into the sea to snorkel every day there are quite a few fish to see and sea is calm due to the enclosed bay.
We didn't use the entertainment but they seem entusiastic for the kids, there were things like bingo and magic shows later for the adults. There were 3 bars some open at different times, we especially enjoyed the cocktail bat on the 8th floor open form 9pm it was quiet and used glass glasses for the drinks.
Overall this holiday was very good, the sea view and proximity to the beach was excellent however the food could have been slightly better- we paid only £180 AL for 5 nights for 2 people so I feel is was excellent value.

We are just back from a great week at this hotel. It was the first week of the season and the place was lovely and quiet, just what we wanted. We have a three year old and a nine month old, so were a bit worried about how we would cope. It was our first experience of all inclusive and I have to say how great it was.
The hotel itself has every thing that you need, without needing a car. We needed a cot in the room, which made the room a bit cluttered. if we go again I would book a superior room that has more space.
The buffet was excellent. A great variety of fresh fruits and salad. The only thing that let it down was the kids meals. The options on the kids buffet were very limited, but we were lucky because our three year old isnt fussy and ate from the main buffet.
There is no option of baby food, or weaning stuff, but I had brought a load of jars and boxes of food and a travel kettle, so we could feed the kids in the room. They wake up and need feeding aroun 6 and breakfast isnt till 8, so thats sometnig to bear in mind with small kids. There is also a microwave in the dining room, so you can do what you need to in there.
It was quiet as I said, however they were gearing up to be full steam ahead as were leaving, and I got hte feel that this place would be really busy and noisey, so if want it quiet, be careful when you go.
The biggest selling piont of this hotel is the quality of the customer service, it was second to none, nothing was too much trouble, from the moment of arrival.
We are hoping to go again, at the end of the season, for another fab week.
Enjoy!!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior if you want more space, costs around 14 Euros per night.

Been there in the middle of October for a short break.
The staff are as good as it has been said in the previous reviews (except the restaurant manager who thinks he's got a chip on his shoulder) so I don't think is anything to add on that.
Regarding the rooms if you what to have any rest in the day avoid the 7th floor as underneath the main restaurant and reception area and you can hear everything from above. On the small side with more beds than needed ( we booked 4 double rooms and all of us got rooms with 3 and even 4 beds...) but acceptable. Bathrooms could definatley do with an update.
Food was ok even that one of us (it allways has to be a fussy one) complained about the lack of choice.
Weather wasn't too bad and even that we had one cloudy day there where plenty of things to do and nobody got bored (archery, voleyball, tennis, canoeing and evening entertainment - as part of the all inclusive package)
The main inconvenient was the fact that neither of the swimming pools were heated (the sea was warmer than the swimming pools).
If you are going with the family and/or friends and you are looking for an entertaining agitated place this is an ok hotel in a lovely area and if the price is right then i would recommend it.

Room Tip: Choose a room between 6th and 3rd floor
