“Best African Christmas 2013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

Spent the Christmas holidays at the baobab this was one of the best holidays spent in Kenya and we have had several holidays in various places .
The staff were very helpful and friendly, the Christmas Eve evening meal was a feast for the eyes and all staff worked so hard all day to make it so,again thank you all for a lovely holiday.

Room Tip: Choose a room that looks out to the ocean.

Fantastic resort with post-colonial spark(large British library, string trio playing in the evening in tuxedos) . Great & friendly staff, fantastic food, perfect location for safari. Clean and nice villas, marvelous nature (monkeys will get you, so don't play with them ;-)

We stayed here after a great safari we had in Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. We booked a standard room through Tui and we were not dissapointed by the services offered by the hotel.
Check-in: we arrived around 6 pm, we were greeted with hot towels and a tropical juice and we received very fast the keys to our room.
Room: We were allocated a room at 3rd floor in The Baobab section, overlooking the ocean. The room was far enough from the reception and this means that during evenings it is more quiet because it is also far from the theatre where evening entertainment starts at 9.30 pm. The room has almost all facilities that you need: comfy bed, LCD Tv with lots of English speaking channels (BBC, CNN, Dubai One, Sports), hairdryer, air conditioning, fridge (no minibar included), 2 complimentary bottles of water, nice rustique balcony, office desk. The only inconvenience for standard rooms is the lack of mosquito nets around the bed. On your office desk you will find also all the information that you need regarding a la carte restaurants and Afya Bora Welness and Spa.
All-inclusive package: The hotel has a very good AI and drinks are available from 10 to 24. Only the local drinks are included in the package and these include: coca cola, fanta, bitter lemon, passion fruit, orange, pineapple and tropical juices, draught beer, house wine, alcoholic cocktails (pinacolada, rum punch, pink lady, passion daiquiri) and non-alcoholic cocktails (fruit punch, shirley temple, virgin colada), espresso, capuccino, black tea and local spirits (Safari Gin, Safari Vodka, Can White Rum, Safari Whisky, Safari Brandy, Kahawa Liquer). Food is very diverse and includes fish (tuna steak was our favourite), beef, pork, chicken and turkey. You will find also lots of vegetables, potatoes, rice, salads and of course the kenyan chapati which is really delicious (with or without garlic). Fruits are very diverse also: mangos, pineapple, oranges, passion fruit and watermelon are really great as it is the creme brulee.
Beach: There are extreme differences between high tide and low tide. During high tide there is practically no beach while at low tide there is an immense beach and you can walk tens of meters inside the ocean, stepping on the corals. But what makes this beach almost inaccessible for lots of tourists are the beach boys which are hassling them. The beach boys will try to sell you all kind of staff from bracelets to small statues and from necklaces, bbqs on the beach to snorkeling trips. We did not buy anything from them because even if you buy from them they will not leave you alone. They will try to sell you more staff...
Pools: There are 3 pools in all three sections of the resort: The infinity pool of Kole Kole is the best place to watch the sunset around 6 am, the Maridadi pools which are the best IMO because they are very quiet and few people come here to relax and The Baobab Pool - the noisiest of all - where lots of kids play waterpolo or just swim in the pool.
Stores: There are nice souvenir shops mostly in Baobab section where you will find nice soapstone statues, jewellry and even clothes. In the Kole Kole section there is a souvenir shop where you can buy magnets, t-shirts, hats, statues but here prices are not negotiable.
Wifi - There is wifi internet everywhere but you have to pay for it: the most convenient package is the 12 hrs one which can be used for 2 devices and cost 12 euro. No free internet is a big minus for the hotel.
Hotel fauna: There are 3 species of monkeys that live inside the resort: colobus which are the most beautiful and peaceful ones, the sykes monkeys which are the most annoying because they steal every item they find: toilet paper, donuts or bananas and the baboons which are also stealing food but less frequently than sykes monkeys. Try not to feed the monkeys (they need natural food not cooked) and try to close all the doors from your room when you leave it not to have unexpected guests.
Trips: There are several trips that you can book inside the resort or with reputable agencies which will offer great service and memories. One of them is JT Safaris which offers great safaris in Tsavo, Amboseli or Masaai Mara. Prices are lower than what is offering Pollman's office inside the resort and you will have a great private safari in a 4x4 jeep. A full day private safari in Tsavo East cost 220 USD pp (lunch included at Voi Safari lodge) in a 4x4 jeep and 185 USD in a van. You will receive also some nice gifts from Julius Nzumbi at the end of the day...
Other day trips include Shimba Hills safari (which is far from being my favourite) or snorkeling in Kisite National Park.
It was a really enjoyable holiday on December far away from European winter!

Room Tip: Maridadi wing is the newest one and the most quiet but also the most expensive one. If you are not p...

Excellence Resort - you are very well looked after from the time you arrive to the time you depart, the rooms are very large and spacious, the food is good and there is lots of choice and the beverages keep flowing all day if you want them. The pool in the part of the hotel we stayed was fantastic and we just chilled out the whole trip on the beach or in the pool.

Booked with Thomsons for the Dreamliner, this wasn't available on the way there but was on the way back. We had booked 2 superior twin rooms and ended up in the Maridadi wing with adjacent rooms. The staff are so amazingly friendly, and we decided to tip at the end of our stay this did not affect the service we received (as we had experienced in Cuba) they still carried on providing exceptional service. The waiters, waitresses and chefs in the Maridadi restaurant were fantastic, especially Sammy the chef (always smiling).
Plenty of pools to choose from, each one a little different so something for everyone. Our favourite was the Baobab pool.
Never in my life have I seen so many people taking part in organised activities as I did here, even though it was so hot.
We went to the beach a few times and did chat to the beach boys, ended up buying some items from them, you soon learn to be firm with them. The water was lovely and warm but I would recommend some footwear to go in the sea.
The monkeys are very entertaining, especially the baboon who walks round like he owns the place, just be careful round them they are wild animals.
I am someone who is attractive to mosquitos as is my dad, so we were very pleased to leave with only 3 bites each (and we think some of those were ant bites).
Although my phone was forecasting rain for everyday we were there we only saw 1 short shower. I would recommend November as a brilliant time of year to go.
We did all our excursions through JT Safaris (reviewed separately) couldn't say enough positive comments about him and his team and it meant we got to keep our rooms whilst out on safari.
I wouldn't normally return to the same place twice but this place really captured my heart, I didn't want to come home, and I would love to go back. I loved the place, the food, the people, the rooms, the weather and yes the entertainment is a little cheesy and mimed but still good fun to go and watch.
Thank you for our best holiday ever!

Room Tip: 2206 and 2207 get a pool view and a glimpse of the sea

Stayed at the Baobab beach resort in April with my husband and baby. We stayed at the Kole kole resort and it was breathtakingly beautiful!
Although it was an off peak season an extremely rainy, we absolutely enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the hotel.
First off the room was extremely gorgeous and well designed with two four poster beds and all the furniture In a natural wooden design.
I was extremely impressed with the cleanliness which is saying something as I am a clean freak!
What amazed me was that all the rooms were cleaned and aired even though they were not used and because of that, when we needed to change our room to the ground floor, it could be done do immediately without need of the room being 'prepared'.
It being a dusty country, I was amazed that there wasn't a speckle of dust even on the white cloth that draped the four poster beds!!
Wasn't amazed at the design of the bathroom which was incorporated in to the bedroom design but points for creativity there!!

Food was extremely fresh and tasty and amazing. Everything from the fruit and starters down to the delicious and creative desserts! Just watch out for the baboons and monkeys who decide to make sudden appearances and startle guests during their meals (although they are usually taken care of quickly from the watch guards)!!
The beach was clean and empty and breathtakingly beautiful (and we didn't encounter any beach boys insisting us to buy goods which was a refreshing change!) and the pools were brilliantly clean. The Kole kole has we didn't encounter too many a spectacular infinity pool and beautiful views!! Would only wish it was a heated pool for certain times of the year!
Beautiful place that I would totally recommend!
