“Attentive Staff, Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

We stayed at Diani Reff during a 2 week sarari holiday to Kenya. We stayed in the resort for 11 nights, and spent the other 3 on safari. The hotel rooms were spotless, and came with a fabulous welcome pack of fruit on our arrival. On the first night there was an issue with my air conditioning system leaking, but i was moved straight away and they could not have been more apologetic. The food was of a very high standard, in both the buffet restaurant and the other restaurants (you have to pay a premium for these restaurants). The staff could not have been more attentive and friendly, they really made our holiday very special.
The only downside were the monkeys, who if you give them a chance will enter your room. So keep the balcony doors closed!

Dear guest,

Thank you for your nice review of our property. I and the service team appreciate them especially on the clean and spotless rooms & high standards of food offered. Regarding the monkey menace, we are looking at ways of keeping them away from guest areas so that our guests can be more comfortable.

Regards,

Cant really say enough about this hotel apart from the fact that we will be returning at some point. Rooms were clean and all hotel staff were friendly and helpfull.

The beach is second to none in size and cleanliness , with the brochure pictures if anything not doing full justice to how good it is.

I was able to stay in the sun for longer than I usually can because the strong breeze makes it feel cooler than it actually is in temp....but Beware as you will burn if not covered in factor 20 minimum.

ALL I CAN SAY NOW IS GO AND FIND OUT YOURSELF!!!!

Room Tip: we stayed in a junior suite, simply superb!

Dear guest,

Thank you for your nice review of our property. I and the service team appreciate them especially on the cleanliness of rooms and staff friendlyness. Regarding the brochure not doing good justice to us, we are already working on the new designs for both our website and the ebrochure to be completed in due course.

We spent two nights at Diani Reef prior to moving to a different hotel.

The rooms were clean, however, the bathroom is in need of renovation. The service was amazing as well as the food. The breakfast spread was excellent although only open until 9.30am!

The beach was clean and one of the best spots along this stretch.

The senior management were always visible and speaking to the guests. Will return in the near future however please can the bathroom be updated to modern standards!

Room Tip: Sea Facing rooms on the top floor

This is a very nice place to go when you want to just relax. The staff are pleasant and the food is really nice. They have special theme nights you should try. The swimming pool has a very nice pool bar and there is always a life guard around. You should also try the burgers, yum!

This is a huge resort stays in a very nice place with stunning view.

The staff is very friendly and efficient, I still remember some names like Mareen at the Kids club, Hamadi at the Restaurant, Celestino at the Front Beach Bar. The lounge is big and luminous, the food in the restaurant is good especially the Asian section.

As said, the resort is very big with a large number of rooms to manage, I believe the management has a huge quantity of things to deal with everyday. There are some issues need to be improved:

- All the ramps are without handrails and are quite dangerous as they are not evident, no one reminds you to mind your step and it is risky to fall anytime if you don't pay attention.
- The lift is used only for staff and it's not so friendly for family with strollers or handicap with wheeling chair or simply if you have heavy luggage you will need some help from the staff.
- The water in the bathroom is often brown!
- The door lock didn't work all the time and we often have to ask for support. I thing the system should be changed but it will require a lot of money.
- There is only 1 cleaner for each floor and there are so many rooms to clean, so at 12.30 when we finished the lunch and the kids need to have a rest, our room was not cleaned yet so we had to waited at the pool until the cleaner finish our room or asked her/him to come back later.
- The beach is not so clean and has a lot of seaweed. I found an old flip-flop floating in the water and brought it on the shore. I told a guy (who seemed to be a supervisor of the staff who work in the garden passing by) that I found some garbage and showed him, he just walked away without saying anything. I don't know if he cared much about keeping the beach clean or not.
- The beverage in the hotel is quite expensive and cost almost 3 times more than price from supermarket, while guest is not allowed to take in any kind of beverage. This is why most people who commented here were not so happy. I think the management could think about other ways to offer to the guests like pay 3000 shillings/day and get ALL-YOU-CAN-DRINK, for example.
- The management could also think about different packages options, like package for elder people who spent a month in the resort, package for couple, for people from NBO, for family with kids, for groups, ect.
- The shows at 9PM are interesting but I saw very few persons asked for drinking. I suppose because of the prices for beverage, the location (it is very windy) and the show (short, 30 mins) so people that walked in late for seeing the last mins of the show then go away.

Despite all of that, we did like a lot the swimming pool and the Asian food in the restaurant.
We would come back to these place again.

Before coming here , i would never think African 's beach would be that great. The hotel have the best location, with a supermarket right in front and Nakumatt, a bigger super market within 10 mins walk .The private beach is the best part here, front of the resort is a huge long reef that attract us to walk all the way, in shallow cool azure color water , discover a lot of sea creatures, star fish, fishes (in many size and color),crabs, sea urchin, sea spiders...
Hotel serve a lot of half-board buffet and have a great steak house, also a beach restaurant that make one of the best /freshest salad i have ever taste.the buffet changes everyday, and it did not bored me with full selection of foods. However, deserts served here is not impressive, with non creative variety , too much sugar and cheap food coloring/chemical,which leave smell on cake and mousse.
The service at F&B outlets is flawless, however I had to wait quite long for my 1st meal at the resort, even i know it s African style to be "pole pole", after mention it to the General Manager, it had improved a lot.Food at Diani Reef always comes with a big warm free smile.
Not only the general manager of the resort go around chatting with guess ,but also many staffs do it, make the ambiance of the resort become friendly and so comfortable, when ppl feel cared .
By the design of the place, i assume everyroom have a beach/sea view.Room is spacious, clean, bright ,with insect nets ,even though it have an outdated fashion style of furnitures , i did feel very comfortable during stay.
entertainment team do make sure that we have full activities everyday, for both adults and children. Many staffs amazed me by speak not only English but also Polish, German, Italian...
the nearest safari is shimba hill and you dont have to drive long to get there.
We went out for dolphin safari on a dhow , with Coral Spirit company, and it was the best thing i done in Africa .
The staff do make a lot of efforts to keep this place(not a very new construction property) in neat, clean .
I do thing this resort need a face lift /renovation to deserve to its reputation and service , as many new place around the world do have much better room furnishes, equipments, and decors, with the same or cheaper price, I did feel like i come back to visit my old childhood house sometimes.

Room Tip: no elevator is operating, so choose a ground floor room for convenience, but of course, higher floor...

I lost my heart to this week to the resort ; each day I was seduced by the sheer natural beauty of the resort and I fell in love all over again!

Diani / Ukunda is an hour away from Mombasa mainland. Stay away from Mombasa completely and preferably FLY into Ukunda directly.

The resort is spread out on lots of acres giving you enough space and the feeling of isolation, if you desire. THE BEACHFRONT is the main attraction. Flat beach , no rocks, no corals and pure white sand keeps you mesmerised. Enough pool beds and there is lots of space between other tourists on the beach. The rooms are comfortable considering one would only spend the night in there. However, they are old, need new quiet air conditioning - but in no way dirty. Linen and manchester is fresh and cleaned each day. The rooms I am told are undergoing renovation soon, hence it will enhance the experience.
The LOCAL KENYAN staff is what makes this Resort an experience to treasure. Their KENYAN spirit and warm KENYAN reception at all times is touching. It is the LOCAL KENYAN staff in particular, that make you feel like you are at a home away from home.

The quality of food is what this resort boasts about - and truly I could not find a fault. One could get INTERNATIONAL FLAVOURS of food each day and nothing was repeated in a week. The South Indian Chef and the several Kenyan chefs, each had a talent that could be seen in the taste of the food. The salads are fantastic, the soups are mouth watering and the main courses offer something for everyone. The Cheese section requires attention - cheese but no crackers? The desserts are good. The quality of the bread is fine but lacks of different breads and styles were noticeable. The section with the sauces, chutneys and condiments look very messy and needs urgent attention. It looks like a messy display advertising the brand names. The presentation of the food display can do with more creativity. The breakfast buffet had everything one could want but lacked an artistic presentation that one would usually find in five star resorts or cruises. Nevertheless, my taste buds had the best time too! It is about quality and not quantity in certain sections- I feel the hotel needs someone to look into these minor but important details ; that carry long term impressions.

The security and 24 hr patrolled beach guards gave us a sense of safety. The Beach Boys are a nuisance and should be ignored for idle chats; the guards usually ask them to keep a distance from the hotel grounds and public beach. Avoid taking valuables and avoid walking on the beach at night. The security guards and general security within the hotel is very good and one does not feel insecure.

One other attraction of this resort is that no one cares how well you dress for dinner as long as you comfortable. There is no strict dress code but remember nudity is forbidden by law.

The pools - one mixed and one for adults are lovely and very tempting to swim. The pool bars and beach bars are well equipped and keep one tempted with different drinks and cocktails.
The Spa offers some amazing treatments but is in need of an upgrade with fixtures and fittings; It lacks that cosy charm that a spa should offer. However the therapists are professional and their technique and hygiene are not compromised.

The Resort overall when compared to the BEACH EXPERIENCE of neighbouring hotels, was a winner as it is the beach that is the major attraction. A beach that is cleaned each day, the sand soft and nice and sparkling white! Thankfully no coral and rock to hinder a stroll along during low tide. Some hotels in the same range, have great decor and modern effects but terrible rocky beach and high up on a cliff. This resort was definitely a winner with the seductive beach and the hundreds of Coconut Trees.

Once renovations are complete as we were told, I can definitely say it will be worth the five star it boasts about. All in all, a winner in a nut shell. A great time and memorable experience.

I stress once again, fly direclty into Ukunda and avoid if possible, Mombasa Mainland which includes the ferry crossing ; the mainland dampens that fun filled isolated holiday experience.

I will definitely return to the resort and I will most definitely recommend it for conferences and that special honeymoon, by the way - a fantastic spot for a "location location" wedding !

We were there in low season, but high or low, it should not affect the guest experience in my opinion of the basics.

In my opinion the weather was perfect - cool at times but sunny and temperatures bearable!

As they say in Kenya - "NICE TIME"

Room Tip: All rooms are good, sea facing rooms are always nice and a bonus to the experience. However one is a...
