“good resort but poor management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

we visited Swahili after getting very good recommendations from friends in Nairobi. the place is beautiful and largely well kept. however one of our guests money was stolen from the room and the management first tried to deny it after challenging them we found ourselves dealing with a very unprofessional rude manager who largely wanted to put things under the carpet. after repeated reminders they have not shown any interest rather have been dismissive of the entire episode even refusing to give an objective report. I will not be surprised that these events will increase and the lousy management and security staff would overlook these blaming the guests for misplacing stuff!

This is a one sided review written with menace in an attempt to discredit this hotel and its management. In addition, the comment regarding management is offensive and is made on the grounds we will not share the investigation report with him. It makes no mention of the threatening language, hiding behind his diplomatic status nor the reviewer's insistence to pin the loss on a particular member of staff.

There is no proof the money was 'stolen'. Certainly our investigations would indicate so. We are happy to share the report with the Diplomatic Police. We are also more than happy to share the threads of the threats made.

I stayed at Swahili Beach for two nights and found many things wonderful about the place. The rooms were clean and tidy, the beds comfortable and the food was delicious. There were a few areas where the hotel let itself down a little; they tried to charge me double the rate for my stay and only changed it when the GM got involved, the television in my room barely worked, the 'free wifi' was non-existant and the staff who saw me lugging my bag through the hotel on the last morning were less than enthusiastic about coming to help me! It is a shame because this hotel is beautiful and I would certainly go back and stay again if they made a bit more of an effort to tidy up their bits and pieces. Overall, a lovely place to stay but certain areas really do need to be looked at!

Stayed at Swahili this month for four nights and it is by far one of the most beautiful hotels I have stayed in , in South coast.

From the rooms, bathroom, sunbeds on the patio, everything was pure luxury!

Loved the many pools with fantastic views of the ocean , the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the Food was AMAZING!!

Would highly recommend this hotel and cant wait to go back soon...

Room Tip: Request for ocean view rooms

Really pretty hotel. Lots of comfy spots to lounge around the enormous multi-level pool or by the beach. Good food, lots of vegetarian options. Wi-Fi is kind of weak but that is to be expected. My one complaint is that we were there for our honeymoon and they never acknowledged it whereas other travelers who were there on the same honeymoon package received champagne and cake. Also, the air conditioner in our room was incredibly loud. It would make this horrible cracking and crunching noise in the middle of the night. I asked at reception for them to look into it but the noise never went away so I don’t know if they tried to fix it or not. Oh and be sure you bring long pants for dinner.

we recently stayed at this hotel in june 2013. the hotel is fantastic and staff very freindly and helpful. we went with my elderly parents who had limited mobility and the staff at the hotel could not have been more helpful .we arrived late at the hotel due to a delay at the likoni ferry and the hotel manager arranged for a meal for us although we arrived after midnight. my parents room was upgraded to a ground floor villa with a minimum of fuss and the staff at the hotel were very attentive and helpful at all times. the rooms were very clean and comfortable and the buffet breakfast varied and execellent. the buffet in the evening was also execellent with a large choice available. it has a small private beach where you can relax without being harressed by vendors. there are large no of swimming pools to enjoy. i would thoroughly recommend this hotel and would have no hesitation returning.

Room Tip: if possible aviod the likoni ferry crossing by flying direct to Ukundu which is very close to the ho...

Definitely the best choice on the South coast! We just came back from this hotel a day ago after 14 amazing days there. I am happy we did choose this hotel.
Thank you for the great hospitality – Rose, Faith and Clifford, meeting us in the restaurant every day, Ali, Martin and Anne for the great food, Stephen, from the security and Ruwa, from the house keeping.
The hotel is having great facilities, access to the beach and the ocean. The beach is not a private one and there are many people trying to sell stuff, however the guards of the hotel help you to push them away. The rooms are spacious, very clean and with nice views.
The food is a bit too much to the Indian style and with too many spices, but there is always what to eat…perhaps the management can think of a bit more towards the European taste…
The hotel is a piece of heaven, I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: rooms aove the reception and those that are between 54 and 80

We arrived at the reception only to be welcomed by bossy pushy front office personnel. Were looking around the lobby area were told to go sit down on the sofas. Then were asked for passports or ids. Explained to the gentleman that we r residents drove down from Nairobi we didn't carry passports, and neither was I informed at the time of booking that we require passports to check in. The response from him was that its common sense to carry passports now days in this age if terrorism! I told him we have our driving licence. He just chose to ignore. Then we came across another young man mr. Jandu, who advised that driving licence is fine. Even the ladies at the reception desk were not friendly. It seemed like they were doing us a favour by allowing us to stay at the hotel..or as though they were being forced to work there without choice.

We were a group of about 10 and had booked superior delux rooms. I was planning another group booking, coming back in November so asked several times during our stay if we could have a look at the standard rooms. The answer was no. None vacant! . But was surprised when later in the evening was told by a friend in our group that they got to view a vacant standard room earlier on!

The pool bar and restaurant is extremely overpriced. I ordered a fish and chips and got a small piece of fish smaller than my palm and approximatly 15 chips for 1500/-! It was the same with the chicken.

The buffet is good but not up to the standard of the hotel. Serena is definately better, where we often stay. But the rooms at Swahili r more spacious and lovely.

They need more lighting around the pool area. It's quite dark when walking back to the rooms. Also room numbers can't be seen from the path along the pool. Need to go round to the back to view room numbers.

Throughout our stay we got NO. Hot water despite having complained. They have a beautiful tub and shower but we could not enjoy it as no hot water.

It's such a beautiful hotel. If only they could improve on their staff training and customer service/ relations. Mainly on the front office staff as they r the face of ur hotel.

Obviously a disgruntled group after a long drive from Nairobi. I suspect the root cause of irritation was the fact we called for identification at check-in. This is not our requirement, but one forced on us by Internal Security. All Kenyans and Kenyan residents have a form of identification required for all manner of dealings from using a credit card in a supermarket through to collecting a parcel at the Post Office.

With a large group of 11 pax, we invited them to sit in a more comfortable area for check-in. It is also easier for the group briefing to take place.

This group was confirmed in Standard rooms but on 21 June none were available. As they wished to be close to each other they were given a two room category upgrade to Superior Deluxe rooms. A Standard room was available the next day but no one came to Front Office to be shown the room.

We will look into the other issues raised, in particular, the food and beverage related one. All portions, however, are the same.

Hot water is provided by a solar heating system, backed up in cloudy weather, but an electrically heated system. We did have a corroded cable issue and we will check to see if it affected any of the rooms allocated to this group.
