“Stunning new hotel ....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Arrival greeted by incredibly welcoming staff, gorgeous drink and cold towel - after a week on Safari, on entry you immediately feel the need to wallow in a long bath and dress for dinner as this place oozes calm, tranquil, cleanliness .....the rooms are stunning, bathrobes available and sweetly scented products to make you feel gloriously fresh ... enormous beds, tv, wi fi (a little sporadic) and tea/coffee facilities lead to a very pleasant stay. The spa, almost completed, hosts treatments and relaxation areas overlooking the ocean and a multiple of infinity pools give the complex plenty of space for seeking your own area to relax.

Afternoon tea, cakes and sandwiches served at 4pm is a lovely touch though with the abundance of choice available for breakfast and dinner (lunch available or huge supermarket across the road) you are hard pushed to be hungry here....

Beach when we stayed was rather full of washed up seaweed (despite daily efforts by staff to sweep this up ....) so probably not as stunningly golden beautiful as some areas and with a 'reef' adjacent to the beach, watersports not visible though apparently available (for fees) - however, simply laying on the very comfortable loungers listening to the crashing waves was a tranquil experience. Would we go again? Yes, definitely ..... despite initial reviews of early opening teething troubles, the Manager must be listening as we loved the place and staff truly lovely, smiley and attentive.

Room Tip: Suite massive with lounge and separate bedroom, dressing room, laundry room, 2 toilets, bath, washi...

Much better than any of the other hotels I have stayed at in the area. Everything is new so they have a few small issues but not any real issues. The pool is outstanding and the food is very good. The Indian is very good and they are expanding the pool menu

Definitely raises the bar for coastal hotels. The beach bar could add a few healthier options (I gained a few kg), but all in all, a wonderful stay. Highly recommend the Spice Route restaurant for a change from the evening buffet - top notch indian food.

Dear Kitengelaglass,
Thank you for your constructive review. We will take on board your comments regarding the menu at the beach bar. I agree some of the menu items are just a little too tempting! I’m glad you had an opportunity to try Spice Route too. We look forward to welcoming you back again.

A breath of fresh air on the Kenya coastline which has become host to old patched up hotels. Stayed in the superior deluxe suite for 5 days. Room was large, comfortable, and apart from a few minor issues with the room which were promptly resolved, the whole experience was great. Good service, and the menu was vast and delightful. My two children loved the place and the pools were well maintained, clean and loads of fun.

We stayed at the Swahili Beach for a week in June following three amazing days on safari in the Masai Mara at the Mara Intrepids. Check in was quick and efficient and we were welcomed with a refreshing drink.

Rooms: We booked a superior room and had a great first impression. However, it became apparent the following morning that the bathroom wasn’t working properly, so for this reason we asked to be transferred to another room and the reception staff were happy to oblige. In fact, they showed us around four rooms and allowed us to choose our favourite. Although they were all superior rooms we noticed some minor differences in layout; some had a larger balcony or terrace but no indoor sitting area, and the higher rooms had better views. Despite this, they all had their advantages and were all spacious, luxuriously and identically furnished and had the same bathroom facilities. We ended up in room no. 120 which was on the top level and had an amazing view of the Indian Ocean. It had a balcony, separate sitting area, large comfortable bed with mosquito drapes and a fan, as well as air conditioning and a writing desk. There was also a large flat screen TV which fortunately for my husband (but unfortunately for me) had a huge variety of sports channels showing practically every sporting event going! The bathroom was similarly stunning with a large sunken bathtub, separate rain shower and double sinks. There were some really comfortable bathrobes but no slippers (a regular annoyance for me!). I would say that the room at the Swahili Beach is probably the most beautiful we have ever stayed in.

Facilities: The pools and grounds hit the same high standard as the rooms and again are probably the best we have ever seen. The focal point of the hotel is the waterfall of several infinity pools which is spectacularly lit at night and overlooks the ocean giving an amazing view during the day. The pool area is vast and the hotel was quiet whilst we were there, but I can’t imagine the pools being crowded even when the hotel is full and we always managed to have one of the smaller pools all to ourselves each day. This is all surrounded by beautiful gardens which we were lucky to be shown around by Mbeke, the head gardener who was very friendly and kind. He told us that the gardens were completed before building work began on the hotel which meant that the gardens were already mature and established by the time the hotel opened. As others have said, the spa had not yet opened but treatments were available in one of the executive suites (which gave us chance to have a peek at that) which had been transformed into a temporary spa. I had a facial and my husband had a massage and both were excellent.

Food: I normally prefer a la carte to buffet food, however the standard was excellent and there was an extensive choice including some items cooked to order while you wait. After dinner, one of the staff called Ricky came round the tables offering Swahili coffee, which was lovely and a nice touch and we enjoyed chatting to him. At lunch, we would wander down to the beach bar which was in a beautiful setting and the food here is really tasty – we enjoyed pizza, sandwiches and samosas and all were reasonably priced. On one occasion, we asked to swap our half board evening meal for lunch (as we fancied trying Ali Barbour’s cave restaurant that evening) and again, the hotel was happy to oblige and we were allowed to choose from a number of items on the menu at the beach bar. Afternoon tea was also included in half board which was a nice little extra.

Local Area: Whilst in Diani, we headed over to the Forty Thieves beach bar on a couple of occasions and had lunch and played pool there and would recommend this if you fancy a change. The beach is really beautiful here with its soft white sand and turquoise waters. We also ate at Ali Barbour’s cave restaurant on one evening where the setting is romantic and the food was great as were the cocktails. We also took a snorkelling trip on the Pilli Pipa dhow which we would highly recommend: we saw dolphins, a moray eel, a stingray and lots more besides.

Staff and service: I had a particularly nasty fall the day before we left and badly bruised my back. The staff were concerned and did all they could to help, including bringing ice packs and dinner to our room on that evening. In addition, the front of house manager made a point of asking after me and how our stay was on check out.

As it is a new hotel there were some teething problems which were to be expected, however we did get a great opening deal for our stay (via Kuoni) and I think some of the previous reviews are overly harsh. The staff welcomed the opportunity to rectify any issue, really went the extra mile and were accommodating to all of our needs. In any case, we prefer to stay in new hotels because they always look fresh and free of wear and tear. We overhead another guest commenting that many of the other hotels around Diani Beach have become a bit tired and that Swahili Beach has really raised the bar. For me, the combination of this stunning hotel and the white sands of Diani beach make this a winning formula. When the time came to leave we wished we could have stayed longer and were sad to be going.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. Higher rooms have great ocean views, some r...

Dear An_Ace_Wren,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience of Swahili Beach and Diani. I hope that you have fully recovered from your fall. Apologies for the initial trouble with your bathroom; I’m pleased that you enjoyed the room that you were moved to. It is great to hear that you enjoyed the food in both Majilis restaurant and at Baharini beach bar. Also that Mbeke had the opportunity to give you a tour of our lovely gardens – he is very knowledgeable. I really appreciate your in-depth review and we look forward to welcoming you and your family back soon.

The spot is naturally blessed and the hotel has been opened less than year. That said, service and streamlining is still required. Room assignments, restaurant and bar hours and openings are confusing, shift without notice and need some work.
Swahili Beach could be much better with some streamlining but, is already a beautiful place worth visiting.

Room Tip: Get on the second or third floor near the water.
