Have you ever had the feeling you just needed to get out? No work, no internet, not too many people, but still enjoy good food, a soft breeze, some sun and a nice beach? Well, being absolutely exhausted, I finally decided to take that long overdue holiday and Galu Beach Retreat was EXACTLY the medicine I needed.
I arrived there in the evening, where a lovely 3 course meal was waiting for me and then turned in quite early. As I did not switch on the aircon nor the fan, and had turned the cooling off of the water dispenser (great addition to the room by the way!), I fell asleep to nothing but the sound of the waves 75 meters away.. only to awake the next day at 2pm (!!).
I was on a full board package and the great thing is that you can decide when you want to eat. In that first week I have to be honest that there were quite a few mid-day breakfasts :). Lunches can be chosen from a large menu and dinner has three courses. And even with so many options it was still possible to have it tailored to your liking every day. I have to say that the food was really good; very tasty and fresh!!
In my package I had also booked a daily yoga lesson. Every day a teacher came a pre agreed time to teach an hour of yoga. The yoga platform is beautiful, with three sides open and a view on the ocean, I could think of worse places to practice. Other facilities one can use or book include star baths, a jacuzzi, various massage and beauty treatments. Although if just up for total relaxation a good book and the Galu beach sun - or comfortable day beds just outside you room are all you need!
Initially I had booked 1 week at the retreat. After a week of not doing much else than eating, sleeping, reading, swimming in the ocean and yoga, I wanted more :) and hence decided to extend with another week. With a bit more energy, it was time to also explore the surroundings some more. The retreat for instance has two kayaks that you can use. A great thing to do is take them out to the reef, snorkel around there and then ride the tides back in. If up for some kitesurfing; Galu is renown for this. And if in need of lessons; there is a kitesurfing school just a 10-15 minute walk up the beach. From Galu there are also nice daytrips to undertake: some of them being the Shimba hills national park and Wasini Island, which was one of my favourites!
Overall a great holiday; very very relaxing! Thank you so much Stephanie, Doris and the crew for making my stay special. What a great team and lovely place you have! I Hope to come and stay again!
