We've just returned from our holiday at the Zante Maris, which we must confess we were drawn to by the glowing reports on Tripadvisor. Whether we were in a parallel universe or not is open to debate, but we weren't impressed. The rooms were spacious and clean, but also quite tired. We had very squeaky beds, plumbing that vibrated so loudly you thought a plane was landing. A shower that channeled most of the water on to the bathroom floor making it very slippery. Doorknobs that came off in your hand and a really dodgy hair drier that's cord was taped with PVC tape with suspicious wires exposed (we did notify reception about this but it was just re-taped) it didn't work after 2 minutes use anyway. Food was very average and canteenesque, the desserts were exactly the same at both lunch and dinner, which was a creamy mix with different colour syrups on top. Some of the theme nights in the beach restaurant were good, however we've never been to an Italian night without a grain of lasagne in sight. Wine swung from palatable to earthily bad, but in fairness this is quite common in all inc hotels. The cruncher that spoiled the holiday for us was the noise pollution, loud music blared round the pool and snack bar from 11 in the morning till 8 at night, we asked on 3 occasions if it could be turned down a bit, but it rarely went down for more than an hour. Considering most of the guests were middle aged we're not sure who they were appealing to, conversation, reading or a sunbed snooze were not possible. We had Celine Dion screaming 3 times daily that her heart would go on, but by this stage we'd lost the will to live. Sadly worse was to come in the guise of the evening entertainment, we are not fans of 2nd rate singers and generally avoid this. Alas you are not allowed to dodge this as it struck up at 10 on the terrace in the centre of the hotel and continued until midnight. The noise was deafening, if you wanted to watch a film in your room forget it! I've had 2 operations this year and am unable to walk far and tire easily so escape to other bars was not possible for us, it seemed the onslaught on your ears lasted for 16 hours a day. The only upside was the weather was lovely.
Rooms overlooking the streets were quieter than all the pool view rooms
