We have just returned from our first holiday to Cephalonia and we miss it already. We stayed in Lourdas, travelled with Thomson and stayed in the Villa Lefkas. The views from the villa where stunning and the beach and local tavernas walkable, although the climb back was good cardiac exercise. We soon found our favourite beach bar, a large draft beer 2 euros and served in an iced glass - just what you need after spending the day in the glorious red hot sunshine. We visited a number of tavernas/restaurants and recommend Lorraine’s Magic Hill for the goat stifado, Klimatis for the sirloin steak and Andromeda’s for the views and excellent value for money set menu, 10 euros - on Tuesdays they have a buffet night with live entertainment :)
Petro’s supermarket in the village is well stocked and has fresh bread and wonderful chocolate croissants delivered daily along with milk etc. You can also pay by credit card which is very useful as the nearest ATM is in Argostoli. On the way to Argostoli you will find Lidl, Carrefour and AB supermarkets.
We were lucky to see the turtles at the quayside in Argostoli being fed by the fishermen, you need to be there by about 10:30 to see them.
The only negative of the holiday was the villa. Fortunately we had booked last minute and therefore it was heavily discounted. If I had paid the full price I would have asked that we be moved. Tiles around the poolside were extremely dangerous, we reported them to our rep on her visit day 2 and they were repaired on day 3 by Kristos the poolman/handyman (an all round good guy). The air-conditioning in the main bedroom blew out hot air, not useful in 35C+ temperatures; this was repaired on day 4. Luckily we didn’t want to do a lot of cooking because the total lack of utensils, other than a wooden spoon, set of tongs and a fish slice, would have made it very difficult. There was a microwave but no microwaveable dishes. All the curtains were in a dreadful state (hanging off) and on investigation I found that most of the curtain tracks hook eyes were broken, so we tried our best to organise the hooks and eyes so that we could shut the curtains. I know it sounds bad but we loved the position, sea view, local area etc so much, that we didn’t want to be moved elsewhere. Both the pool and villa were very clean but needed some tlc.
For those of you considering Cephalonia go, spectacular scenery, lovely people, quiet resorts, good food, clear seas and their Rose wine isn’t bad either.
