Just returned from a 1 week break at Villa Mare. The apartments are similar to those everywhere in Greece, basic but comfortable and a nice base to explore the island or simply chill out on the beach in quiet, relaxing Lourdas. The rooms are spacious and airy and whilst the facilites in the rooms are lacking and a little dated, it does the job. The beds are small and a little hard but you get used to them. In addition there is a wardrobe, chest of drawers, a fridge and sink and that's pretty much it but it's all you need providing you don't plan to spend a great deal of time in your room. The bathroom was pretty cramped and the shower was awful, but no worse than others I have previously experienced in Greece! We had a room on the 1st floor with a nice big balcony overlooking the stunning mountains at the back of the resort. The rooms at the front of the apartment block have sea views looking out to Zakynthos. The ground floor rooms have sunken terraces so bare in mind the views from these won't be as good. The pool area is one of the best I've been to with a lovely, well maintained, good sized pool and there were only ever a handful of other people up there so it was peaceful. There are sunbeds a plenty and all offer a nice view over the apartments looking down to the sea. My only real complaint about the Villa Mare is that the maid service is only once a week and this in my opinion is very poor, especially as the bins were overflowing and towels needed changing after a couple of days. Otherwise, we were happy with everything especially for the money we paid for the holiday. The resort of Lourdas is very quiet, perfect if you want to do nothing but relax. The beach is part sand, part shingle and although not the best beach ive been to, it offers nice views around the bay and the sea is warm and very clean. There are several decent tavernas and snack bars on the seafront but many of the restaurants and cocktail bars are at the top of the resort, which is around a 30 minute walk away up the infamous gruelling hill! There is a shortcut through the nearby park you can take but I wouldn't advise this after dark. Taxis to the top are around 7 euros or if you decide to hire a car, there are plenty of parking spaces at Villa Mare. Overall, if you want a relaxing holiday in a quiet resort staying at comfortable apartments, you can't go far wrong at the Villa Mare. Just take some good walking shoes if you decide to tackle the hill every night!!
