“Basic but comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

Just returned from a 1 week break at Villa Mare. The apartments are similar to those everywhere in Greece, basic but comfortable and a nice base to explore the island or simply chill out on the beach in quiet, relaxing Lourdas. The rooms are spacious and airy and whilst the facilites in the rooms are lacking and a little dated, it does the job. The beds are small and a little hard but you get used to them. In addition there is a wardrobe, chest of drawers, a fridge and sink and that's pretty much it but it's all you need providing you don't plan to spend a great deal of time in your room. The bathroom was pretty cramped and the shower was awful, but no worse than others I have previously experienced in Greece! We had a room on the 1st floor with a nice big balcony overlooking the stunning mountains at the back of the resort. The rooms at the front of the apartment block have sea views looking out to Zakynthos. The ground floor rooms have sunken terraces so bare in mind the views from these won't be as good. The pool area is one of the best I've been to with a lovely, well maintained, good sized pool and there were only ever a handful of other people up there so it was peaceful. There are sunbeds a plenty and all offer a nice view over the apartments looking down to the sea. My only real complaint about the Villa Mare is that the maid service is only once a week and this in my opinion is very poor, especially as the bins were overflowing and towels needed changing after a couple of days. Otherwise, we were happy with everything especially for the money we paid for the holiday. The resort of Lourdas is very quiet, perfect if you want to do nothing but relax. The beach is part sand, part shingle and although not the best beach ive been to, it offers nice views around the bay and the sea is warm and very clean. There are several decent tavernas and snack bars on the seafront but many of the restaurants and cocktail bars are at the top of the resort, which is around a 30 minute walk away up the infamous gruelling hill! There is a shortcut through the nearby park you can take but I wouldn't advise this after dark. Taxis to the top are around 7 euros or if you decide to hire a car, there are plenty of parking spaces at Villa Mare. Overall, if you want a relaxing holiday in a quiet resort staying at comfortable apartments, you can't go far wrong at the Villa Mare. Just take some good walking shoes if you decide to tackle the hill every night!!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have sunken terraces and don't offer the same views as rooms on the 1st floor...

This was our third visit since 2006 and thank goodness there were hardly any changes since our last holiday in Lourdas, its as peaceful and beautiful as ever.Lourdas is a lovely place to chill out and the Villa Mare a perfect base to do it from, the rooms are typical Greek, basic clean and bright, they are in a great position within a few metres of the sea.The upstairs rooms are the best for privacy and views. The air conditioning is charged at 35 euros a week, which i think is too expensive,we hired a fan at 7 euros a week. The beds are ok if a little lumpy, but i got used to it.The swimming pool is in a lovely position with sea views and the owner Gerry keeps it clean, there are plenty of sun beds around it.You do have to be fit to holiday here as apart from the promenade every thing else is up a steep hill, although there are some lovely tavernas along the seafront, you must try them all and make your own mind up but we found the last one along the prom to be the one we went back to most nights it is called Aridas Palace and the food was superb. We will be going back to Kefalonia in a couple of years and yes we will go back to Lourdas and the Villa Mare.

Room Tip: Contact the owner and put a request for roon on the top floor

We just come back from a week staying at the Villa Mare and stayed in one of the bottom rooms facing the sea.

The room was basic but the self catering facilities was excellent. The pool area was relaxing and quite and plenty of sunbeds.

The area is very quite and luckly we stayed right near the sea but the walk into town is all up hill and only for the fit!!!!!!!!!

The location is great for the beach and a few tavernas near by although the olive lounge up the hill is the best around and worth the walk.

The only downside is that our rooms were cleaned once but this hotel is well worth the money.

The Villa Mare in Lourdas is the epitome of tranquility in Kefalonia!

The studios at the Villa Mare are basic with twin beds, wardrobe, dresser in the living space. The kitchenette is in the same room, we had a fridge, sink, kettle, hot plate and cutlery/utensils and this was all that we needed as we only ate breakfast & lunch in the apartment. The shower room was clean, however at certain times of the day the water in the shower ran cold, this is because alot of water is solar power heated.

We also had a balcony with a sea view which made the holiday complete. It was perfect, you are only a stones throw away from the beach & you can enjoy the peaceful waves on the shore.

The rooms were very clean. We arrived on the Sunday morning, however our room did not get cleaned till the Wednesday. The cleaners could have come on the Tuesday as the bins were mounting up with rubbish & we also ran out of toilet paper, so we had to buy some locally. However, after Wednesday they did come another two times to had a tidy round, empty ash trays/bins etc.

The pool at the Villa Mare is lovely & peaceful, plenty of sungloungers and the pool is large enough for the amount of clients who go here. The water was clean and fresh, it also gets alot of sun as it is a little elevated from the villa. To access the pool you just have to walk up a slight hill but takes at most 30 seconds to reach.

The resort of Lourdas is seperated in two parts, down on the Lourdata Beach (where the Villa Mare is located) and up the hill is the main village. The beach area is beautiful and the beach is a mix of sand/shingle and gently shelves into the water. There are a few tavernas and cafes dotted along the strectch, however we enjoyed the tavernas up in thw village. Up in the village you find a more local atmosphere, a few more tavernas and two larger supermarkets. Our favourite restaraunt was Captain Zorbas run by a local man and his family, the food was lovely and he kept on bringing out free starters/deserts to our table. For a two or three course meal, we never paid over 35 euros including alcholic drinks. It was a lot cheaper in Kefalonia than we expected!

We hired a quad for 5 days to get around the island as we can't sunbathe for a whole week. We stopped in at Skala, Lassi, Sami and Argostoli (the capital). We also went to the Melissani Lake and the Dragorati Coves which is a must in Kefalonia.

Overall we had a fantastic holiday & would definitley recommend the Villa Mare. It was the perfect setting for a perfect holiday.

Villa Mare offers self-catering accommodation in a gorgeous villa right by the beach. The pool and surroundings are stunning and the exterior is kept up to a high standard.

The website implies that all of the apartments have sea views from your balcony or patio. This seems to depend on who you book with. We went with Kosmar and were bitterly disappointed to discover that our apartment led out on to a patio facing a wall. Although the area was well kept, the patio was 'sunk' and next to the main track leading to the beach. Not exactly private. The apartment was unbearably hot at night (the fan that we hired was useless) but it seemed risky leaving the patio doors open...not from a security perspective - from a rat perspective.

The apartment itself was okay. You expect something basic with a cheap Greek package but this didn't feel clean somehow.

I guess this would all have been fine had we not been led to believe that we would be able to sit out for breakfast and late evenings looking out over the waves...

  • Liked — Lovely exterior and great location
  • Disliked — No sea view!
