“Antonios Studios great holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

The studios are very large, and were immaculate. Balconies give stunning views out over the bay and beyond to Zakynthos. The kitchenette area was sufficient for our needs, but utensils were limited. The gem in this place, aside from the pool, the bar, the rooms, views, location, local eateries, great beaches…is Makis the owner. He is unique. Maki just wants you to have a great holiday and from the first ice cold free beer to saying goodbye, he does not relent in his quest to be the perfect host. His Greek night B-B-Q, his “festival” as he calls it, was fantastic value and on the night we went, we had special guests…some invited, some not…. We danced the night away and it was a great party night! We had a great holiday and met lots of lovely people, Makis has the knack of getting everyone to mix and the result is happy holiday makers. Short transfer, but we hired a car to get around and island too is a gem, we’ll be back.

We had a wonderful two weeks at the Antonia Studios in Lourdas! All the studios were quite large, very clean, well maintained and had fantastic views across the pool area and onwards across the sea to Zante in the distance. On arrival at the pool bar, we were given a warm welcome and a beer each. We didn't meet our host Makis until the following morning and he lived up to everything previous reviewers had written (as did Lily and Thelski - the girls who ran the bar and cooked the bar food). All of them were very friendly, especially Makis, who couldn't do enough for you - "everything is possible for my friends" - his favourite genuine quotation! Everything was perfect for us, the weather, the location and the very chilled atmosphere! The rooms were basic, as expected in Greece, but spotless, containing an adequate kitchenette, a safety deposit box (payable), air con (payable) and a hairdryer! The pool and bar area was great with plenty of sunbeds and sunshades, even a couple of gazebos with beds (wow!) The BBQ evenings were brilliant experience, especially the fireworks and the dancing!!!! Everybody mingled together to make it a lovely evening! The village has plenty of restaurants and a few bars, all of a good standard plus a few supermarkets for your essentials. The beaches are all a bit of a trek, especially Lourdas, with a fair old hike back uphill, not great if you are not so good on your feet!! We hired a car for a week to see the picturesque island, which is lovely, especially Assos and Katelios and the impressive view down to Myrtos Beach! We visited the commercialised Costa Costa beach at Lassi a couple of times, well maintained with lovely sand and beautiful sea! Overall, we had a great holiday, very chilled and so relaxing that we have said we will definitely return to Lourdas and to the mighty Makis's Antonia Studios!!!

Ever filled in one of those pesky holiday questionnaires? One thing the tour operators know is that if you don't enjoy great weather, you're very unlikely to rate your break excellent. However...

Travelling in the Ionian islands from the end of September, there's always the risk of the 'first rains' arriving early. And in 2013 they did, often in spectacular fashion. Thunder and lightning, street lights still on at 9.30am because of the gloom... not quite what you come to Greece to enjoy. And yet I can thoroughly recommend this accommodation.

Antonia is one of the first studio blocks you come across as the road flattens from the drop through Vlahata. It's to the side of the Maria Anna hotel and opposite Afrodite restaurant, and convenient for the three supermarkets. It looks out over the sea and the adjacent settlements at Trapezaki and as far as Pessatha where the twice-daily ferry crosses to Zakynthos.

The 24 studios are arranged on three levels, numbered from the top. All rooms are spacious, with sufficient storage. Bathrooms are fully tiled with shower tray and curtains. Patio windows and metal shutters open onto good sized balconies or ground floor patios, with the design of the building affording some privacy and varying degrees of shade. Rooms 4, 12 and 20 have additional shade from a large tree. While all rooms are good, I'd avoid room 24 as it has a small patio overlooked by access to the pool area.

Kitchen areas are the typical Greek "two of everything" from cooking rings to spoons. There are kettles and toasters provided, and the fridge - in my room at least - operated quietly. Hairdryers are wall mounted next to the dressing table/mirror/stool, and there's plenty of electrical sockets. Optional air conditioning unit and safety deposit box. Cleaners came daily and the place is well looked after. And no need to be concerned about the poor weather during my stay - plentiful hot water as it is heated by oil.

Outside, the gravel car park at the front changes to block paved access to one side round to the pool and bar. The gardens are colourful and well-maintained and (new for 2014!) the grassed area was replanted during my stay which will produce a much better lawn. The pool was cleaned daily as were the adjacent areas of sun loungers. Two gazebos provided some shade. The bar is small, but has toilets and showers. Free wifi is available from the pool bar, but reception from the room balconies was very weak.

I usually choose accommodation because of the location. Here, you're near the top of the famous hill leading to Lourdas beach. Kanali beach, only accessible on foot, was 15 mins away. The Vlahata bakery (closed Sundays) is on the main Argostoli road, so still a hike up from Antonia, but all the nearby supermarkets had fresh bread. Poor weather meant I did more walking than planned with trips to Sissia monastery, across Mount Ainos to the monastery of Saint Yerasimos, the abandoned village of Valsamata, Epanohori and to the kastro at Ayios Georgios. There are plenty of places to eat, and I enjoyed them all; Andromeda, Olive Lounge, Afrodite, Trifilli, Spiros, Lorraine's Magic Hill, La Mer, Klimatis...

So far so good, but what makes this accommodation excellent? The answer is always people. If you recall any great holiday, any great stay, it's always because people made it special - not a view, not complimentary toiletries, not fluffy pillows. And here the special ingredient is Makis.

I can't imagine a review of Antonia without lots of reference to the guy, who from the first (free beer) welcome to the almost touchingly sad goodbyes, is devoted to welcoming you and making your stay fun. He is popularly said to be crazy, but he's a lot more intelligent than that; always looking to improve and positive in his belief that investing in his apartments and his relationships with his guests is good for business. And his enthusiasm expands to his staff who clearly like working for him.

The Greek BBQ night is legendary - Makis refers to it as a 'festival'. Absurdly good value for money, Makis invites family and friends as well as guests. Each Thursday becomes an intense preparation with attention to detail, everything must be just right. And it all works, from food through heart-shaped fire dances to the famous fireworks - even if you suspect risk assessments aren't very common in Lourdas...

Funny thing, though. Every time he saw me, Makis would boom out "Colostomy!" I don't wear a bag, so I need to go and check my Greek dictionary...

Room Tip: Rooms 1-8 top floor. Rooms 4, 12 and 20 have additional shade from a large tree. Avoid room 24 as it...

As our host Makis might have said! This was our third visit to this resort but our first stay at Antonia Studios, and certainly the first of many!! From the welcome we received on arrival to the 'extra' special festival on our last evening we were made to feel so comfortable and looked after, nothing was too much trouble. Makis is a larger than life host who was warm, interesting and certainly enjoyed entertaining his guests. The apartments were clean and well maintained, the atmosphere friendly and engaging. You would never have known that it was the penultimate week of the season. If you want to be looked after, learn to greek dance and have a fun time, this is the place to go....and don't forget to buy a bottle of his olive oil....superb!!

Room Tip: All rooms have sea view & balcony

I shall start with the arrival, when we walked down to the pool to check in we were greeted by the lovely Thelski who runs the pool bar/reception during the day. There was only about 6 people around the pool and you could hear a pin drop. We were showed to our room and although we had seen photos, the view was even more stunning. We sat around the pool bar and before long the big beaming smile of Makis walked down the slope greeting us like long lost family with free beers and a genuine welcome. This generosity of Makis happened several times throughout the holiday to anyone who was around the pool or bar, including once when the heavens opened and being mainly all British, refused to leave the sunbed and all waited for the rain to subside sheltering under sunbed umbrellas, it paid off and the sun came out about half hour later. As you can tell from previous reviews Makis is known as a bit of a legend wanting to make everybody happy and you couldn't help to warm to his enthusiasm. He was very grateful for any comments or concerns made, which we unfortunately had to do after a rather noisy late night round the bar. The comments were taken on board and it was very quiet thereafter. The accommodation is basic but very clean loved the balcony and view especially with my cup of tea in the morning. The pool and surrounding area were kept exceptionally clean every day and all the staff day and night were exceptional. As a previous reviewer said you couldn't help but speak to all of the other guests, such was the atmosphere and character of Antonia studios. There were supermarkets nearby with a good choice at Spiros. We cooked some nights and sitting on the balcony eating your meal you couldn't get a better view at some very expensive restaurants. We ate at some really good restaurants like The Olive Lounge, La Mer and Andromeda. We hired a car, which was essential (great rates from Perfanis) and traveled most of the island and what a beautiful one it is too, Assos was our favorite and Sami, we loved Costa Costa beach at Lassi, abit more commercial but we love people watching and a nice sandy beach. The Kefalonian people were lovely and as warm as the weather. In summary this was the most chilled holiday we have ever had and helped by a fantastic peacefull and unspoilt island with wonderful people.

Room Tip: All rooms are very good but floors 1 and 2 have better views.

Where to start!! Good flight, short transfer, Steep! road by bus but a beautiful place. We enjoyed a good club sandwhich and free cold beer on arrival. Makis arrived larger than life with a greeting which we heard repeatedly over the next week. Large rooms cleaned daily (pillows a little lumpy) drink plenty and you wont notice!!. Lovely atmosphere, great sundowners shared round the pool with lovely people. Makis made everyone feel welcome. Beautiful views. Lovely and peaceful for relaxing during the day with the odd spontaneous outburst early evening from Makis the party animal. Many practices for what?? oh yes party nite i.e Greek Night shared with his family and some other locals. Great fun dancing and watching the nieces dancing traditionally with fire. Makis doing his letting off firework stunts. A couple of surprise events that I wont divulge on here! Locally some good tavernas our favourite was Spiros. Long walk to the beach, we recommend a car but be careful if booking on the internet as ther may be some extra charges on arrival for insurance. Cant fault the appartment and will return. Thank you Makis and family. P.S we had room 17 which has a lovely shady patio which is nice to cool off on where some of the other rooms had spectacular views but were possibly a little hot to sit out on.

Room Tip: Room 17 has a nice patio with a bit of greenery growing round it, not as good a view as the top room...

We had a wonderful time at the Antonia Studios. The host, Makis, and his staff were amazing, very friendly and helpful. We were welcomed with a cold beer and the low down on the local area including restaurants and supermarkets. Food and drink at the apartments was reasonably priced and good quality.

The apartments, which are basic, were spacious and very clean. Apartments were cleaned daily and sheets and towels twice a week.

The local restaurants are just a short walk away and we had lovely meals all of the restaurants that we tried and we tried most of them! There are three supermarkets and car/bike hire in the village but no ATM or bank, although one supermarket would change some cash to Euros. Some restaurants take cards. There are taxis in the village.

The beach is lovely but you need young legs or a car as the hill is steep. This is a stoney beach but the water is clear and snorkeling great. There are few restaurants at the beach or on the hill down to the beach but we only tried 1 as we were only there for the week.

Back to Antonia, we had one of the best holidays that we have ever had and this was down to the amazing character that is Makis! Highly recommend Antonia Studios and Lourdas
