“beautiful and good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

we've stayed here one week and it was great. clean rooms, with a nice balcony, tv, refrigerator, towels, hairdryer and wifi. the rooms have a very nice sea and mountain view and the owners are quite friendly. the vila is close to the beach and to a supermarket - Anna's and to the bus station. Lovely location.

Last year we decided to take a short vacation somewhere else except Romania so we went to Thassos, Greece by car. Our friends were already check-in here so we tried to speak with the lady that owns the studios but she doesn't speak any other language except greek, it was difficult but in the end we agree at 50e for 3 nights that because one of our friends was staying all by herself in a room for 3 persons.
The studios have a great view, the rooms are clean, same with the bathroom. We had a little kitchen, a sink and a fridge (this was perfect). The rooms have shutters so you don't need air-conditioning. If you just close the shutters all day long it will be just fine.
We came with our personal car but we left it down the hill, because is no space for parking.
We ate at Vigli and another restaurant that was close (in the main street we take right for 50-100 m, big, white, beautiful building). Average spending for 2 persons (2course, desert, no wine) 30 - 35 euro.

The location of the studios is quiet no dogs, no loud music, you can sleep in peace :D
My advice - rent a car and take a tour of the island - is it worthy!

Athina Studios, Golden Beach, Thassos.
The Athina is situated at the northern end of Potamia Bay. They are some 250 metre from the beach behind the Golden Sands Café and Fedra Resturant, but because of their elevated position you can see the whole of the bay from your balcony.

There are the old and new parts of the building, we stayed in the older part which is made up of 11 studios. At least 1-10 have seas views with balconies. The rooms are basic but comfortable. They include shower room, hair dyer, safe (15 euro a week), air conditioning (5 euro per day, excellent value), some basic cooking facilities including a fridge (essential for the wine and beer etc.) The rooms are serviced everyday, with clean towels every other day and linen changed during the week. There is enough room for a couple and their clothes.

The area around the buildings is well maintained, with room for parking and garden furniture to use. There are also a table and chairs on the balcony. The staff are friendly and helpful, although we did not really call on them.

The studios are about
- 250 m from the beach
- 150 m from the supermarket, which caters for most of your needs and the local bus stop.
-within 500m there are several restaurants and bars
- taxi’s and car hire are within 500m.

We preferred the beach at the northern end of the bay, it was much more picturesque, although busy but not crowded. Beds and parasols were available at 2.5 & 2 euro respectively. Water sport facilities were within easy walk. The sea was very clean and shallow for quite a distance out. The water could be calm or provide some moderate surf. Walking along the beach was very popular. The one criticism would be that the beach could have been a little cleaner, lots of cigarette ends.

We tried several restaurants, all of which were very friendly, great value for money and excellent service. Three that stood out were the Vigli, for the views above the bay, Sotiris, for being so close to the beach and the Fedra for it’s vibrant atmosphere. The average cost of a 2-course meal, including a bottle of wine was between 30 & 40 euro per couple. Worth noting that very few shops or restaurants take credit cards, and the nearest ATM is in Skala Potamia. There are some places that will exchange travellers cheques (best to take euro TC’s).

At lunchtimes we frequented the Goldens Sands Café, which served ice-cold beer, a good range of snacks as well as good music.

Golden Beach does not have much nightlife, discos, late night music or much to entertain teenagers. Skala Potamia appeared more lively, but was a good 30 minutes walk from Golden Beach.

The only downside to anyone visiting is if you have a phobia about wasps. Because of the amount of green foliage there do seem to be an abundance of wasps, so insect & wasp repellent as well as creams for bites are essential, not that we had any major problems, but they can be annoying.

Just one last comment about the transfer to and from the resort organised by Thomsons. You fly into Kavala and then transfer to the ferry port for a 30-minute journey to Thassos, and then 20 minutes to Golden Beach. During your transfer your luggage travels separately, as the coach’s do not go on the ferry. You leave your luggage at the airport and it turns up at your accommodation, for us within an hour of our arrival. Then on the return it’s collected and you get it at the airport.

Overall we were very pleased with the accommodation and the resort. It was the ideal place to chill out for a week, enjoy the sun, sea, views, food and wine.

Golden Beach is a spectacular place in itself, with a great shallow beach and stunning backdrops of tree lined mountains. However in the Athina Apartments we met problems the moment we arrived. The host is not an english speaker so we had to wait a day for the rep to come and take our 70 euros for air conditioning and twenty for safety deposit box. We were given a cot for our 20 month old baby which was held together with string and the foam was protruding through the plastic dangerously, also the mattress did not fit the cot. It was a heath hazard, in short. The air conditioning eventually came on and worked not very well for one day. We reported it again and on returning to our room we noticed it smelled of cigarettes and also the air con was actually working. The next day it was broken again. It did not work again for the remaining ten days of our holiday. I was not given a refund and as it was 30 degrees plus we had to have windows open which presented my family with a total of 56 mosquito bites, all at night, despite our best Moz Repellant efforts.
The day trip to Bulgaria was more like a punishment than an adventure, 85 euros each to get picked up at 0440 and dropped off at 1900, of that 14hour day only 3 hours were sightseeing, the rest was travelling on a coach which (can you believe it?) had problems with the air con. In Bulgaria we were told we were going to a city plagued with "organized crime and bag theft" so be careful, also the locals don't take Euros and don't speak english.
Our meal for the day was good and we hastily ate it, having been on the go for 8 hours without eating.
Back in Golden Beach we noticed a large amount of noise coming from the building next door to the Athina, building noise, i.e. drilling and hammering. It is a new block owned by our non-english speaking host and was disturbing for the last week of our holiday. I've read elsewhere people saying they'd never go with Thomson again, we are in that club also.
Apart from being given a badly damaged cot, not having air conditioning for 12 of the 14 nights, having a bad day trip and not being treated well at our apartments, everything else was fine, except I noticed a lot of other building work going on in Golden Beach. The locals are planning for the future, and risk over commercialising the place. People go there for peace and quiet but at the moment parts of it are just building sites. There are not enough QUALITY tavernas to cope with the increasing numbers of tourists though some of the restaurants serve immaculate food in very filling portions.
When all is said and done you gauge your holiday on whether or not you'd return. We'd definitely go back to Golden Beach, it has a lot to offer (namely a fantastic beach) but we wouldn't go near the Athina and we wouldn't go with Thomson.
