After a very leisurely and easy drive from cherbourg ferry port, which seems to be geared up for novice continental driving, the location is easy to find, and the approach through the gates with the famous adele automated opening system makes you realise you have arrived somewhere special! The owners greeted us as if we had known them for years, and gave us a great liquid welcome with nibbles! The An Tobar inn, which is on site, is one of the cosiest, friendly bars ive ever had the pleasure of visiting, with the staff all experts in hospitality! As far as i can tell, the support from the local ex pats, and the french alike speaks volumes for the ambience and charm of the location!
As you look around the grounds, its very hard to describe just how special this place is, the peacefulness hits you, and the natural beauty of not only the grounds, but the surrounding area too! The moat around the grounds makes you feel like royalty, and complements the style of the buildings perfectly, also providing an excellent location for a poohsticks competition! There are ducks and geese enjoying their habitat who are up for a chat if you so desire, free range fish in the lake, which as i understand you can pitt your wits against, with the option to keep your catch! The outdoor swimming pool is very inviting, with palm trees and patio furniture to relax on. There is a baywatch style lifeguard called gary available for a small charge, which offers peace of mind, especially if you cant swim! There are also horses roaming around in the fields who are very relaxing to watch, a barn owl in the barn, in other words, the place is at one with nature!
The accommodation in the tower is the best ive ever experienced

giving you the chance to do things at your own pace, with very comfortable, tastefully decorated rooms each on its own level.
The bathroom is kitted out with all the fancy gadgets, while still kept in fitting style with the rest of the rooms. An open fire is in the
lounge area to bring out mans basic instinct, and after returning
from an tobar can be lit for a centrepiece better than telly!
The kitchen is compact and functional, but very well equipped. We
were not stuck for anything at all!
So as an overview, quaint, enchanting, different, comfortable,
relaxing, in my view an excellent location for a short break,
or as a venue for an A list celeb wedding! The surrounding areas
also have more to offer with some great restaurants, amazing
scenery and historical sites to visit. Well done to all the staff and
i hope Le Chateau du Taillis goes from strength to strength!!!!!

We spent three nights in this Castle in October. I almost hate posting this as we hope to return here someday and I am afraid we may not be able to get in if the word gets out!

We had booked it over the internet and printed out their map and along with our map made our way easily to the front gate. Our first impression was of total awe as we crossed the moat and entered the grounds through the Castle wall. We were met outside by Gary the Castle keep (owner) and after a very warm welcome he showed us to our room. We had a room in the Main house, which there are two rooms here. There is also an accommodation in one of the towers that we didn’t see. Our room was huge with a double bed, single bed, wardrobe and desk. There was a small hallway with a table that led you to the very large bathroom with spa tub and double sinks. Everything was decorated in a style fit for a Castle. Downstairs there is a main room with dinning table, sofas, TV and everything else you may need to relax or sit and visit. This is where our breakfast was served.

The grounds are beautiful and include a swimming pool, exercise equipment and lake.

We were the only ones staying here during this time and while we occasionally encountered Gary (which he is a true delight to talk with) we felt as though we had the whole place to ourselves.

There is also a pub bistro here. We never ate here but did have a glass of wine when we arrived. We had our dinner each night before returning. St-Lo the first night about 30 minutes, Bayeux the second night about 45 minutes and Caranton the last night about 15 minutes.

We used this location for our base while we toured the many D Day sites and villages of Normandy. The location was great for this as it is situated in the middle and you can easily access many places is a short amount of time. And then when you are finished for the day you come back to the countryside in absolute quiet to relax and reflect on all that you have experienced. We have never been anywhere as quite and tranquil as it was here. At night you could look up and see the Milky Way!

Now I know I have mentioned Gary but I must tell you more. He was such a hospitable outgoing Irishman that was fun and interesting to talk with. We really enjoyed our time spent talking with him about all subjects. He could give excellent information about the area and suggestions on places to see eat and visit as well. He was not the least bit imposing and could easily leave you be if that was your preference. We however preferred to have his company.

Le Chateau Du Taillis is a castle with B&B and a Self Catering Cottage in the North Turret of the castle. It is located at the bottom of the Cotentin Peninsula in Basse Normandie, around an hour from Mont St Michel, Cherbourg and Caen.

We stayed in the Tower for the week which has 3 bedrooms, kitchen, lounge and spa bathroom, all very tastefully decorated in keeping with the castle theme. Each room is on its own level with a tight spiral staircase running up the tower. Very funky! There are 2 B&B rooms which we didnt see but the rooms looked lovely on the website.

The chateau is owned by a delightful Irish chap called Gary with help from English couple Chris and Adele. There is a pub/bar in the grounds which has a large TV, games room and serves excellent food and drink. Limited opening in Winter.

The grounds are around 30 acres with a large trout lake, kids play area and moated castle walls. For the summer season there is also a swimming pool and gym equipment (bit chilly for us in October though!).

This is an ideal location to just chill or tour Normandy with it's very central location.

A highly recommended stay with a warm welcome.
