“Very nice place , affordable and a good location for birdwatchers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

I stayed at Tuulan tupa for 2 nights on my way to and from Norway in late May, 2013. My room consisted of 2 large bunkbeds (4 beds), a table with chairs, a refrigerator and ensuite bathroom, everything was clean and tidy and I only paid €50 per night. The food in the restaurant was very good, a buffet breakfast was included.
The surrounding area consists of several lakes, forest and swamp, ideal for birdwatching. They still feed the birds in May, so I was able to observe pine grosbeak, siberian tit and arctic redpoll. Golden plover, ringed plover and ruffs were present in the swampy areas.
The only drawback was some trash and litter from renovation work still on the property. The grounds near the bird feeders were littered with plastic pieces and glass wool, something which is easily cleaned up.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the bird feeders are more quiet.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel and if I have to describe it only one word that would be 'cosy'. The location is perfect to see northern lights whenever there is sufficient sun activity and clear sky since contamination with city light is practically zero. People are friendly, food is plain but very good. For those interested in birds there is a lot to see too: arctic tit, arctic jay, willow grouse and in February and March the pine grosbeak. Would love to go back and see the lake which was now covered in snow and ice. If you like hiking and are not afraid of real winter make sure to have good snowshoes.

In a country where much accommodation is very expensive (by British standards), Tuulen Tupa was an absolute bargain. I stayed for two nights with two friends on a birdwatching trip. Despite outside temperatures dropping to below -20°C, the motel was always warm and hospitable. We shared a room with bunk beds and an en suite shower... Nothing fancy, but clean, tidy and warm. Food in the restaurant was similarly simple, but there was plenty of it!

I'd particularly recommend the motel to birdwatchers in the winter months, since the owners put out huge quantities of bird food and attract several species that are hard to see elsewhere: Pine Grosbeak, Siberian Tit and Siberian Jay.

We also enjoyed a stunning display of the Northern Lights here, to complete a very memorable visit.
