“Nice room - average meal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

My wife and I booked a package consisting of a stay from sunday to monday, a set dinner and wine menu on sunday evening and breakfast on monday morning. We got a nice room in the building across the street. Unfortunately the dinner on sunday evening did not meet our expectations. The selected wines were excellent but the quality level of both starter, main course and dessert was average at best. The breakfast however was very nice. We have had nice dinners at this hotel in the past so this visit did not live up to our expectations.

Room Tip: WIFI coverage was very poor in our room. Maybe this was due to the fact that the room was across the...

I stayed in this lovely cozy hotel for 5 nights in mid summer of DK . The room itself reached only standard level. But the prime point of is inn is its location , staff friendliness and restaurant.

I really fell in to this charming small town of Mogeltonder .You can spend your afternoon walking around this village to enjoy the old buildings . The surrounding park and garden are perfect to have the evening walk to ease your mind. And the villagers are also very tourists friendly .

On top of everything , I got very stunning dinner at the hotel restaurant. The chef's recommended menu was very good.

First of all this "inn" is in Møgeltønder and not in Tønder town itself (which Tripadvisor seems to state). Both places worth visiting.
The hotel part:
Had a pretty large room in one of the old houses at the "castle street". Recently modernized. bot with small things that were not up to the standard.
Of course there was free WiFi. The included breakfast was not the usual buffet but a relatively large selection served at the table. Elegant and OK although ppl. used to cooked breakfast would be pretty disappointed, but guess that most guests are Scandinavians and Germans who would be well served.
Interesting that a variety of prices for the room (on the same day) could be found depending on where you booked. Hotel itself not hre cheapest. Not so common anymore.

Restaurant:
Had dinner twice - once one quiet evening (maybe 10-14 tables) and once where the big restaurant was full. Logistic on second night went wrong. Had forgot our reservation, Thought we should have a set dinner and wine menu, slow service etc - but we were well compensated.
Food is "modern Scandinavian" style gastronomical dinners. Had some of the costlier multi course dinners both nights.
Although the food was good and some of it quite innovative and very well tasting, there were several dishes which were was not really at the level you would expect (price and presentation of the place).
Some dishes were composed of things that did not work out well together, some things were slightly over- or undercooked and some vegetables and lettuce should have been better cleaned. (or one should realize that April is not a season for fresh quality vegetables).

Room Tip: Room towards the street are OK,there is next to no traffic at night.

The inn is on the main lime-lined avenue of charming Møgeltønder. We were in a junior suite in one of the listed houses on the avenue, next door to the inn. Lovely suite with sofas, spa bathtub, and access to a private garden. The food was excellent and the waiters nice, the service was, however, very slow. The reception service was both slow and impersonal, after waiting a while we had to go into the inn to find someone to check us in and the same was the case when leaving.

We spent one night in Tønder staying at the Slotskro. Rooms were simple yet comfortable and very clean and cosy.

Later in the evening when going for dinner we were taken by surprise as the food and presentation was indeed very good - i mean very good, and much more interesting than the setting in a fairly simple restaurant or dining room would make you expect. Also the service by two young yet knowledgable waitresses was of very high standard.

Finally next morning we were served a very nice breakfast including everything from hot cocoa, coffee, home made rolls, danish pastry, juices and everything else you could wish for.

Indeed a stay that qualify for the overall "very good" rating. Only thing that was not to standard was actually the wireless network that was very unstable and slow in the rooms

We went to Schackenborg Slotskro for a relaxing evening away from home. Upon arriving we we checked in and were shown to our room in a charming old house next to the main building.
The room had a nice view of a garden, and beyond the garden was a forest and open fields. Before dinner we took a walk in the small village, enjoying the scenery of old buildings, the old church, and "Schackenborg Slot".

Dinner:
The 5 course dinner and complimenting wines was quite possibly the best we have ever experienced, and it was all topped off with really good service from the staff.

Breakfast:
It was something else to have breakfast served at the table, when you are used to hotel buffets. Once again the food and the service was top notch.

We would recommend Schackenborg Slotskro to others, and we hope to go back there some day.

We booked an inclusive offer from the hotel’s website - bed, breakfast and 2-course dinner for two nights. This was good value for money. On arrival there were no staff in reception, so we rang the bell - no-one came, so we rang again and eventually a waitress from the restaurant arrived and checked us in. It would seem that the reception is not constantly manned and that the restaurant staff also look after checking-in guests as well as serving drinks outside and dealing with all other guest enquiries. This means that guests sometimes have to wait and that the staff sometimes appear stressed, although they were friendly and helpful at all times. However, in all the time we were there we did not see any sign of the management! The hotel is made up of four separate buildings - two on one side of the road and two on the other side. It's situated in a very charming village with cobble-stoned roads and pavements & preserved houses. Our room (The Rosenborg Room) was in one of the houses across the road from the main building and overlooked a lovely garden with huge apple tree. It was small, charming with exposed beams, but adequate. It did lack an armchair, which could easily have replaced the large chest of drawers at one end of the room. There were drawers in the wardrobe, so this piece of furniture was surplace to needs. As the room was in the roof-space it was very hot during our stay, so a fan should also be standard in these rooms. The bathroom was also small, but again adequate - the shower was over the small bath and the ceiling was low, so anyone over 6'2" would have to crouch. The free wireless internet was very unstable and slow and we frequently had to go down stairs to the ground floor to be able to log-on. There was a cosy lounge on the ground floor and garden table and chairs outside. Breakfast was excellent – served at the table, which made a nice change from the standard hotel buffet breakfast offered at so many places nowadays. The breakfast consisted of yoghurt, a nice selection of homemade breads, meats, cheeses, jams, fresh fruit, juices and good coffee. The dinners were also very good and served by friendly and pleasant staff. We would definitely recommend this hotel for a quiet and cosy break in a beautiful location.
