“fantastic lodge far removed from civilization, yet comfortable and fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

To get to Karawari takes a small chartered plane landing on a grass runway. We found the trip fun, some are bothered by it. The lodge is perched high on a hill overlooking the river and jungle. The views are spectacular especially from the bar and great veranda. The rooms do not have air conditioning and it can be very hot and humid but a nice ceiling fan suffices. Netting covers you at night for protection from insects. Room very nice but not 4 star luxurious - but remember this is a lodge far from any city. The food is great. Service fine. Expert guides take you out on the river to visit the interesting tribes and bird watching. This is a must place for any traveler to PNG

Room Tip: ask for room on bluff as there are rooms with no view

I stayed here for 2 days with my Mum and what an adventure. The lodge was wonderful. Right from when you arrived at the airport, took the boat ride to the near the lodge, short 4WD to the lodge and then entered the main lodge. The staff (all nationals) were super friendly, professional and attentive. We were lucky that there were't many guests at the time, although I don't think it caters for many at a time. Don't be fooled by the price range, you won't be getting the ritz, but you will be getting PNG. The fact that the villages are remote makes this a unique experience. The food is freshly made on the premises (included freshly back cinnamon scrolls and coffee served on our patio in the morning before breakfast). Dinner was once again all fresh produce with soup, main and dessert a set menu. One of the guest was gluten intolerant and at first this was a new idea, but once they got the hang of the meaning of it they were great and even prepared separate fish (not floured) for her for lunch. Our stay was for 2 nights and 3 days. This allowed enough time to travel along the river (by boat) and visit a few of the villages. Whilst the villagers see some Westerners they still had their traditional ways which great to see. The kids as always were a joy and so natural in their manner. At each village there was a small market that sold local handicrafts made by a villager whom you got to meet. The accomodation was novel. Hot water was solar so not really hot, but not an issue as we were in the tropics and a cool shower was a welcome relief. The power is generated by generator and goes off at 10pm until 6am which isn't an issue either as you really do need a good nights sleep for all the activity the next day and it was cool enough in the evening to sleep without the fans.

Room Tip: Room 4 was great as it had water views, was close to the main lodge but not too close that you were...
