“Perfect Honeymoon - don't be fooled by the few negative reviews! (Fishermen read the last paragraph!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

I read a ton of review both before and after booking our honeymoon at Hermitage Bay, so I want to address some of the issues I came across during my research.

The overwhelming majority of reviews were positive, there were however a few negative reviews that gave me concern as we were staying for 10 nights and for us that was a pretty big expense. Let me just say that the problems that people expressed in their negative reviews were total non-issues, period. Do not be swayed or concerned by the negative reviews at all, this place is the perfect place to spend your honeymoon or a relaxing vacation with your significant other.

The staff is wonderful, there are so many that left quite an impression on us, Anthony, Vera, Rozlyn, Tajah, Stoney and Jermall. This does not include everyone, but they really will go out of their way to make your trip special. If you have a special request ask, they will do whatever they can to accommodate it.

The food is outstanding, when most people think "all inclusive" they expect mass produced tasteless food, nothing could be farther from what you get at Hermitage. The wines and liquors that are included at no additional cost are wonderful. The menu changes daily, and always offers something appealing. My wife and I would often times order three entrees and sample them all, you definitely will not go hungry here.

There are tons of other reviews that give lots of details on the rooms, beaches, activities, and have explained it much better than I would, so I will not go into detail on that. There is one thing I will mention, I was worried going in that there would not be real air conditioning in the rooms due to the ability for the walls to be opened to the outside. This is not an issue, the AC works very well, my wife and I were able to make the room very comfortable.

The service from the airport is fantastic, we literally got our passports back from the lady at immigration and were approached by someone and asked if we were staying at Hermitage. They took our bags, gave us cold towels and a water and loaded everything into our SUV. There was never a second of worry as to where we should be going, we did not have to find or look for someone, they found us, definitely a plus.

Okay, so there are a few things that are worth mentioning on the negative side, but nothing significant enough to not give this place a 5 star review. First, you would think that for ~$1,500 USD per night (base rates on their site do not include the 22.5% service charge and tax that is applied to most charges) they would not charge you for serving dinner in your suite. To be fair, the charge is not huge (I think it is $40) and some of the suites are a ways up the hill and it is not an insignificant task to get the food up there, but again for what you are paying it was a frustration.

Finally, and this is not a criticism of Hermitage, but something to be aware of. We chartered a fishing boat, had a great time, the captain and his mate are outstanding, definitely worth doing if you enjoy fishing. They will also cook your catch for you when you get back. We caught multiple Wahoo and Mahi and thought we would be taking it back to cook not just for us but for everyone staying at the resort if they wanted any. We got back on the beach only to find that of the two Mahi and two Wahoo, they only gave us one Mahi, mentioning after the fact that the Wahoo was much tougher and that we wouldn't want it. Totally not true, we wrongfully assumed that we would be taking the fish back to be cooked for us. If you plan to go fishing, make sure you get your fish before they pull out of there. Even with that happening, I would still go on the charter again.

Bottom line, great place for a honeymoon, you won’t be disappointed.

Room Tip: all rooms are great, but the higher the number the better the view!

This was our honeymoon and we absolutely loved this place. From the moment you set foot into this hotel, you are treated with respect, attention and a genuine warmth of affection. The staff were amazing, the food was truly worthy of michelin star rankings- the accommodation was fabulous- we had one of the panoramic villas (38) and it was heavenly. Turn down service each night with a special thought for the day, fully stocked mini- bar, very attention beachside drinks service as well as getting your lounger "just right" for you- we cannot fault this wonderful location at all. It is exactly what it says it is on the website- it is for couples that want to enjoy tranquility, fine food, great service and low key entertainment. We had a romantic dinner on the beach to celebrate our first wedding anniversary ( one week) and it was truly the most romantic setting ever.... now what to do for our two week anniversary back in the uk???. We cannot praise this venue highly enough- truly fabulous.

Room Tip: all are fabulous you cannot choose a bad room- but we loved ours, which was 38.

This was our second visit to this wonderful resort. The first impression was so amazing that we arranged to return the following year. Now we look forward to our next visit in 2014. Hands down, the service, staff, location,, facility, food, and overall excellence I would give this resort a 5+. They welcome you back with warm and heartfelt greetings. Beach accomodations are the best ever !

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms are for easy access to pool, restaurant, sand, ocean, dining areas and bar.

We loved the hermitage Bay. The staff had this wonderful ability of appearing with what you want without being intrusive. they really cared that everything was ok for you. We went the second day of the season so there were a few tiny glitches We had a beach cottage which was fabulous with and outdoor shower that was lovely. The air conditioning was noisy and next time for I hope we will go again I would choose not suite 16 as its by the hotel road which meant the one or two cars that passed by were heard. This is an all inclusive resort which I generally dont like but this was very good. Breakfast could be in your room or by the restaurant on the beach. Lunch by the pool or the restaurant whatever you wanted and the choice small but varied. The cocktails were amazing and the wines served good. This is a very picture perfect romantic place. lovely beach and inviting pool. we took a boat ride which was lovely. Highly recommended

Room Tip: both the beach cottages and hillside were very good. the latter having plunge pools. Avoid suite 16...

We have traveled extensively in the Carribbean and Hermitage Bay is one of our overall favorites based upon relaxation, landscape, view, beach, rooms, food, and staff. It is everythig pictured on its website and more. The views are stunning and the bungalows incredibly private, incredibly romantic! While the hotel does offer a few bungalows on the beach most are built up on the hillside affording gorgeous landscape and ocean views. All the hillside bungalows offer a good sized pluge pool and wrap- around porch with daybed. The bedroom is spacious, well appointed, and air conditioned. The bathroom is also spacious with modern sinks and fixtures with a free standing bathtub. Connecting to the bathroom, in a partially enclosed structure is the outdoor shower. It is fabulous showering while flowering vines dangle above you. The location is awesome if you are looking for privacy and relaxation. There are no other resorts visible as far as you can see. The beach is protected by hills so the Carribbean is calm. We explored 4 beaches by taking a 5 minute kayak ride from our beach then walking over some rocks to additional beaches. We felf as though we were the only inhabitats on Antigua.
We found the staff to be friendly, fun, and accoddomating. Ruth in dining, Jemal in guest services, Levique the bartender, and Anthony& Devon at he beach are just a few of the wonderful staff! The lobby is simple yet welcoming. Although there is only one restaurant and one bar, the food was outstanding with beautiful presentation and there was live entertainment nightly.
There is no night life to speak of here and its about a 40 minute drive to find it. If you are looking for clubs and partying this may not be the place for you.

Room Tip: As high up on the hill as possible for views and privacy. The bungalows on the beach would have a ni...

We visited Antigua in July for a most relaxed anniversary. The service was impeccable and the facility a true escape. Our plunge pool kept us cool yet comfy in the sun. Wonderful mountain views in one direction and a wide bay in 2 other directions. Large footed tub allowed long leisurely soaking seeing the same views. Screens kept bugs at bay (npi) as well as mosquito netting placed nightly over the bed.

Every morning a restock list for snacks and drinks was presented at breakfast. By the time we got back up the mountain on the golf cart the abode was reset. We kayaked, sailed a Hobie, went snorkeling, gathered shells, swam in the bay, and sight saw any time we wanted. We were left wanting nothing as every meal was exquisitely prepared to order. Each meal was shared with a few diners and topped off with sweet little birds snatching crumbs left behind.

Nights were quiet, slow and exactly right for us. Probably 75% of guests were honeymooners and no children. We made one trip into town planned for 2 hours but after 1 we found our shuttle and went back to heaven. We met one young couple heading to Sandals for a night of fast partying but no one else had any desire to leave.

The public roads are rugged getting there but the best advice is to use them twice. People are very service oriented. Ask for Levique at the bar. A wild and crazy guy!

Room Tip: Select an upper level with a pool. A walk down is not bad but a cart ride up is better.

We recently booked our honeymoon at this so-called luxury resort. You would think the price per night would equal impeccable rooms, a beautiful plunge pool and amazing amenities. We found quite the opposite. After a disgruntled and aggressive cabby drove us through the depressed country, we finally reached the resort. Gated of course to fend off the wild dogs and hitchhikers.

While we waited for our room, we were given virgin mojitos. We sat quietly sipping them and observing the empty hotel and beach. It was desolate. There was no music, no laughter, and worst of all, no food! A nice lady mentioned that meals were scheduled and thus we had roughly three hours until dinner. We had just flown 6 hours...

After an awkward golf cart ride up to our bungalow, we approached the room and our hearts sank. The room was a small, simple room. The mosquito net above the bed was dirty and the wooden lamps were either split from the intense heat or the shades were rusted from rain. The plunge pool was filled with leaves and the supposed refreshments in the fridge consisted of sprite and any other diabetes-inducing products. Nothing felt authentic. Our honeymoon "upgrade" consisted of a half bottle of champagne and fruit covered in plastic wrap. We couldn't understand why we paid such a premium for this. The view was spectacular but that was about it.

After many hours of arranging our departure, we left the hotel and headed to Miami the next day to salvage our honeymoon. At least there, the people were friendly and there was some life. I would strongly suggest skipping over Antigua. It is a country in need of money and it will do all it can to take yours.

Dear DB1930,

I am sorry Hermitage Bay wasn’t quite what you are expecting. It is very peaceful here in Antigua and you were obviously wanting a much livelier resort. I hope you found what you were looking for in Miami and managed to enjoy the rest of your honeymoon.
