“Could do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013 via mobile

Lunch in the bar/bistro still cannot understand why the beautiful looking restaurant is not open for Saturday lunch?
We had booked and enjoyed a pre lunch drink in the nicely festively decorated bar where they too our orders.
We were asked to go to our table in the room adjoining the bar which was lacking in festive cheer but then just sat there, even had to go to the bar myself to get a bottle of wine. If the starters were not ready in the kitchen why ask us to move from the fireside to the bistro.
When the food; starters and mains were served they were of a good quality and enjoyed by all only minor point was the cauliflower was unedible as it was hardly cooked. Sweets were excellent as were the coffee and teas.Still not sure why another party in the room were given Christmas crackers etc.Staff were pleasant and friendly and overall feeling by the group of friends was it was a good choice of venue. Sadly an incorrect bill was presented so the rating reverted to not so good.

“Great for Bed & Breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

Great for Bed & Breakfast, but evening meal very poor & very expensive, steak & venison very tough, chips awful, veggies ave. Stay at the Charles Cotton, B&B & eat at the Devonshire Arms in the evening.

“Identity crisis?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Our meal in the restaurant was characterised by distinctly average service. Is it a restaurant? If so, to expect customers to hang their own coats and to open as well as pour their own wine was astonishing. The bottle was just dumped on the table for us to attend to. The food was ok and indeed very good in some respects (the goats cheese starter for example) but there just wasn't a uniformly high standard across the (somewhat limited) Sunday lunch menu.

The previous day we'd eaten in the bar of the Devonshire over the road, where the food and service had been rather better. I'd go back to the Devonshire again, but once was enough for the Charles Cotton.

“A GOOD FIND”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

It was a very wet day and this pub had a lovely warm atmosphere. There was off street parking. The food and the service.

“Excellent weekend with great service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Spent a most enjoyable weekend at the Charles Cotton, with an excellent night of entertainment on the friday (although the bar staff seemed a little under pressure!), good meals and breakfasts, and a genuinely warm welcome from all concerned. Satisfying walks on the 'door step' make this a great venue for a break.
