We have just returned from a week long trip to the Alexandra Beach Spa Resort in Potos on the island of Thasos. We arrived at the hotel on 11th May 2008 after the three and a half hour flight from Birmingham and an hour and a half coach transfer from mainland Greece to to our hotel in the south of the island. The coach transfer is about 15 minutes from the airport to an ugly industrial port where you take a half hour ferry journey to the island before another coach ride from Thasos Port in the north to Potos in the south. Its when you arrive on Thasos that you hear the sighs of relief from fellow passengers as after the fairly drab areas of the mainland, the sheer natural beauty of the island is a welcome sight.
Upon arriving at the Alexandra you enter from the main road just a few steps outside Potos onto a drive which runs all the way down to the reception and pool/bar area. You pass most of the accomodation on your right which has been built in several blocks seperate to one another and the main hotel, this gives the impression of the hotel itself being like a small villiage and is much prefered to the large faceless buildings often found in spain.
The hotel reception is big and airy and encompasses a large flat screen television, pool table and bar. We were immediatly surprised by the style of the receptions furnishings which were cool and minimalist. Overall this gave a very good impression of things to come.
We checked in easily and the staff were efficient and friendly. The only small problem were the directions to the room which were a little vague and the signage around the grounds didn't help my awful sense of direction!
We paid a little extra and booked a superior room. After reading the reviews on this site we were concerned that the superior rooms face the car park and therfore had no sea view. There was no need to worry as the room itself was vast and the minimalist style was carried through, the bathroom was excellent and the balcony was one of the largest in any hotel i've stayed in and had a lovely view. It appeard that the superior rooms were situated on the corners of the blocks of acomodation and as a result the balconies ran along one side of the room, around the corner and along the other side. This meant that there was always sun and shade on the balcony at any time of the day. Another neat touch were the shutters on the outsides of the windows which were excellent for keeping the room cool and blocked out nearly all the light.
The hotel grounds were lovely and very well kept. The two hotel pools were clean and tidy if a little busy and the sports equipment for basketball, tennis, football and table tennis were a nice touch. The pools were crouded and as we were in very early season I can see this would be a larger problem in high season when the hotel was full.
We chose the half board package and again, were concerned with some other reviews regarding the food being a poor standard and a little monotanous. We paid £330 each for the trip and decided that as bed and breakfast wasn't much cheaper it would make sense to eat out if the food was poor in the hotel. Both breakfast and evening meal were buffet with a chef on hand at a special station to cook some things to order; pancakes for breakfast and pasta dishes for dinner. The buffet consisted of a large and varied salad bar with every conceavable item in it, it was regularly topped up and all the items were really tasty and fresh. Two other buffet bars served hot food which included a large and varied selection with minimal repetion from day to day. The food included mainly greek dishes with some German and a few English. The only complaints about the food we heard were that there wasn't enough English dishes and the food in the buffets were cold. To me, I travel to taste different food and culture and I would be absolutly gutted to see lots of English food on the menu. I'm also aware that food is served cooler than we are used to in England and all of this is part of traveling. All in all, for me, the food was excellent and I really enjoyed it. So much so that we only ate dinner out in Potos once which was one of the cheapest, tastiest meals I have ever had. Bed and breakfast would definately not be a problem in Potos.
The other facilities on offer in the hotel are a spa and gym. The gym is small but adequate and did the job for my running. It included a treadmill, bike and a few free weights. It also had a multi resistance machine which used compressed air insead of weights which covered all options. Another novel addition was a power plate machine which are still rare in good gyms at home. The spa offered services ranging from various massages to a jacuzzi, steam room and small pool and even beauty treatments. There were several special offers and the prices were reasonable. If you take a tour of the spa you are automatically entered into a prize draw for a free treartment or use of spa facilities. My girlfriend had a 30 minute back massage which cost 17 euros.
We went to the welcome meeting (Thompson) on the morning of our arrival and found it very informative and interesting. It gave us details of places we had not heard about in our travel books and gave a good insight into the island. The only fault with it, as always, was the later part of the meeting was used to convince tourist to pay a vastly inflated price for things like trips and hire cars. Thompson customers got a special discount from Europcar which meant we pay £230 for a 4x4 for 3 days. We walked into Potos and got the same car for 3 days for 90 euros. We wanted a 4x4 to get into the mountains and the view was awsome from the peak of ipsirion looking almost directly down to the coast on all sides, it was the highlight of the holiday and worth the very long drive.
All in all the hotel was impressive and one of, if not the best on the island. It was clean and the staff were friendly and spoke good English. The food was very nice and I would definately go again.
