I did what I imagine most people did which was to hire a taxi for the day and one can visit three of the major places in the vicinity close to Mandalay those being, Sagaing, Inwa, and Amarapura.
Sagaing was always on my list of primary sights just from what I had seen with the hill "littered" with golden topped stupas and monasteries.
In reality, it was exactly as I had hoped and expected it to be..just pure splendid beauty.
The view from atop all the stupas was just breathtaking. Once reaching the summit, I really only wanted to sit, relax, and enjoy the panoramic 360 degree views overlooking the Irrawaddy River. It's also from atop that you can hear the incredibly cool traditional music echoing through a loudspeaker from a monastery below. From the top you can also see all the other stupa tops glittering below along with the flat plains and Irrawaddy River.
All in all, an absolutely stunning place to visit and this location has some really awe-inspiring shots to take in and enjoy.
- The $10 "Mandalay Archaeological Zone" card cannot really be used here
- Visitors will have to pay a 300 Kyat camera fee for taking pictures at the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda. There is no fee at the U Min Thonze pagoda and no actual fee to get up to Sagaing Hills.
