“A homestay would be no better or worse...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

I found the room to be average, no better than a homestay, maybe a little less smellier, but not worth the price. Save your $10 extra and just grab one of the many rooms available on the main street. The town is small and requires no additional effort to walk 5 minutes and find a place.

They also did not have my booking when I arrived (turns out you don't need one in this tiny town so wait until you get there and see a place you like) and then tried to charge me a night because i choose not to stay there more than one night...how that is possible without having my original booking I'm unsure, but needless to say the service didn't make it either!

The hotel overlooks the river, rooms are quite spacious and relatively clean, the bathroom quite spartan but the shower and hot water worked well. The wifi also functioned well. Staff pretty helpful, really no complaints at al.

Stayed here for one night and the room was ok for the price. Good basic shower and comfortable bed. The stairs are uneven and the wood a bit slippery so be careful on the way up and down!

Tried to use the restaurant without success. Quite simply no one serving! There is another restaurant next door which I used and enjoyed.

At best it is only a 3 star establishment but being only a 5 minute walk to the border crossing it is a convenient place to stay and I would happily stay again.

Room Tip: Top floor is quiter but no lift.

The Riverside Hotel is a small hotel with about 12 rooms. It is directly on the Mekong River next to the major car/truck ferry crossing to Chiang Khong, Thailand. The hotel itself is on a lane on the right, off the road leading down to the ferry.

The view from the hotel and small restaurant attached is indeed magnificent (if you are into rivers).

The hotel is relatively new. Construction materials litter the yard.

The rooms are clean. Plumbing has never been a forte of the Lao and a good plumber is badly needed. In my room, the sink drained on to the floor. Luckily, Southeast Asian toilets allow for water flowing around the bathroom floor and there is a drain in the floor that drains the water away. But, the water from the sink goes on to the floor. Warning: wear the slippers that are provided. If you are not careful, the shower gets the whole bathroom wet. If you are a Southeast Asian veteran, all this is normal.

The restaurant has breakfast. The bananas are excellent. I and my Lao counterparts traveling together also ordered dinner there which was good. No problems with the food.

The owner is a tour operator and the restaurant and hotel are a family run business. They are trying hard to make it all work. Be patient, flexible, and optimistic, and all will be well.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a river view. Room 204, a corner room, has the best view and a small balcony, as...

Had heard good reports, so decided to stay and spend the extra $$$. Not worth the extra. Building in poor shape due to lack of maintenance. Made the mistake of accepting a room on the second floor. We were woken up by people coming into the room above. Sounded like elephants. Considering how hard the bed was, it was surprising we got to sleep at all.
Had a very pleasant dinner in the riverside restaurant. It was hard to beleive that the breakfast came out of the same kitchen it was so BAD. Atleast we had a view from the tiny balcony......

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor would be much quieter.

This is a great option for Huay Xai. The room was big, clean, and had everything we needed. The shower was amazing after being sweaty and muddy on the Gibbons Experience. The non-river view rooms were much cheaper than the river view ones- but the same otherwise. The staff were never around- so if you need to leave early or want to leave on time, make sure you pay the night before you leave and get a reciept.

I was glad to have found this place, as a little bit of comfort is whats needed if you find yourself in this town. I did my research and knew this was where I wanted to stay, at 500 a room per night it may be a little pricier than the others. Room had a/c,tv, and was clean, keep the windows shut though as come evening the mosies are hovering around the windows! The hotel is up the ramp from the boat, turn right and literally about 4 buildings onwards, we missed the yellow sign as it was above eye level. Had a drink at the resturant, it really fills up in the evening so I presume the food is decent. Free internet terminal at reception. You can walk from here to the slow boat dock in about 10/15 mins.

Room Tip: Over looking river
