“Beatiful stay at Il Borro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2006

This year we stayed for the second time at Il Borro. We had a lovely stay at the farmhouse with our two children. There is a great garden and a nice swimming pool. Every day the appartement is cleaned, the beds are made up, the floor is done. The reception people are very friendly and help in any matter they can. The view of the Tuscan landscape is magnificent and we had a stay that was as well as the the year before.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at IL Borro in the Berti Apartment and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. From start to finish, IL Borro was an excellent experience. I emailed Simone at least five times with different questions before booking the apartment and she was most responsive and helpful.
The apartment was equipped with everything we could possibly need, and was a wonderful country retreat. The estate was beautiful and peaceful and everything I had anticipated. I only wished we had stayed longer. We rented a car in Florence, which was an easy drive to IL Borro. There were numerous signs directing us to IL Borro after exiting the autostrada. A car is a must there. You are in the country and the estate is large, and there are other beautiful areas and towns to see just by driving around (get a map).

The staff at IL Borro and the Osteria were exceptional and very helpful. We had lunch one day and dinner both nights at the Osteria, which was also exceptional and one of the best meals during our vacation. Although we stayed in August, the weather was perfect, warm and breezy during the day and cool at night. We definitely plan to stay at IL Borro again during our next trip to Italy. After visiting Rome, Florence, Venice, and The Cinque Terre, it was a welcoming, relaxing end to our vacation in Italy.

I can honestly say that my stay at Il Borro was the most perfect holiday I've ever had. Everything about this beautiful estate is superb, from the rustic setting, 2,000 acres of lush rual Tuscan countryside, to the staff who were helpful and kind, and the accommodation which has every possible modern amenity from washing machine to dishwasher, Italian cofee making machine, cooker etc.

Depsite the fact that it was unbearably hot. July is not the best time to be in Italy, there were shaded areas where visitors could relax and read with nothing louder than birdsong or a butterfly to distrub them, pure paradise.

As every holidaymaker knows, it's the little things when you are away from home that count. The Borro included all of this and more. Fluffly towels and lots of them. A great selection of toileteries. A really comfortable bed, a selection of good books to read, the bedside CD player. In the kitchen the starter pack of ceramic jar full of freshly ground coffee. organic honey and olive oil, real tea, a bottle of the estate's superb wine, pasta, sauce, bread. Great care and attention to detail has gone into making your stay as comfortable as possible.

The surrounding nature is out of this world. The aroma of the lavendar, fresh herbs and flowers, still lingers as you make your way down to the pool. The butterflies, the birdsong. The Borro has to be the perfect destressing antidote to modern life . You will never hear the sound of traffic or ringing phones, I did'nt read a newspaper nor want to during my week. By your second day you really don't want to read the bad news anyway. You find yourself gradually relaxing as you waft away in this glorious planet of tranquil countryside surrounded by nature at it's very best, fields of sunflowers, farmland and vineyard. There's a sweet village one mile away with a great little pizzeria and ice cream parlour.

il Borro is the perfect romantic escape for couples or honeymooners. Ideal for families. Singles will still find lots to do, and feel part of the Borro community. There's a little piazza where guest sit iand chat, while the family of cute dogs of the estate workers and guests play. There's a real sense of community life at Il Borro. When you're tired of lazing around you can join in one of the cookery or painting classes, or join in one of the wine tasting sessions. Horseriding, tennis, hot air baloon trips, and cycling is also available for the energetic.

The Osteria serves the most delicious Tuscan food which is reasonable for food of this quality.

The owners of this wonderful estate have really done a fantastic job of lovingly renovating , restoring, breathing life into this beautiful house and estate, which was run down when they purchased it. They are to be applauded for this, as they are preserving history for future generations and created a beautiful oasis of nature in the heart of Tuscany.

I can highly recommend a stay at this Tuscan Paradise. You will want to return.

The Il Borro farm house, Pin di Chiocci, we stayed in was wonderful. We had planned to meet up there with another family which had boys our age. Immediately after checking in, the boys put on there swim suits, started running around outside in the beautiful courtyard and gardens and then jumped into the pool. For dinner we went to the Osteria del Borro in the village. We had to drive 5 minutes from our farm house. The village had been renovated by the Ferragamo family and was one of the most romantic places I had ever seen and we had a great view from the restaurant. In fact as we arrived a wedding was just finishing and throughout the meal I could not believe how beautiful it all was and how lucky we were to be there. The meal was also great.

Il Borro was a great base to see the other towns of Tuscany, such as Cortona, Montepulciano, Sienna, and Monte San Savino

Dinners were mostly at the local places recommended by the Il Borro Guest handbook. They were all very good. One in particular, besides Osteria del Borro, stands out for both food and service. Cassia Vetus Osteria de Cavalieri has both dinner and gelato. Dinner was excellent and the gelato was among the best we had tried in Italy. While there eating our very good dinner, we were told the credit card machine was broken. We were worried because we did not have enough cash to pay, but they said no problem, just come back tomorrow sometime and pay us back. They were very gracious and we has some more gelato the next day when we came back to pay.

One day we did not go exploring outside Il Borro in the morning but the kids had riding lessons with the person in charge of the Il Borro horses, Allison. We had met Allison late one afternoon as she gave us an introduction to the Il Borro horses. We were all extremely interested by both the information about the horses and the history of Il Borro. Allison is a great teacher. While the kids were taking lessons with her and my husband. I took a cooking class with Chef Leonardo at the Osteria kitchen. I enjoyed it very much and learned how to cook a full dinner: soup, pasta, bread, and semi freddo for dessert.

Staying at Il Borro was a highlight of our trip to Italy.

While dreaming of a holiday in Tuscany, we came upon a web site: [-----------------]. Bid on a whim and won 7-nites in Il Borro in Tuscany. It was the most lovely holiday. Perfect weather, beautiful surrounding, wonderful accomodations- I know that this sounds too good to be true but it really was perfect. Il Borro rents many villas, farmhouses about 45 minutes outside of Florence. We stayed in a farmhouse that was beautifully furnished, sparkiling clean and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Il Burro is an estate (immense) that includes a medival village that also is beautifully restored. The restaurant is excellent- try the beef with lavender. We used Il Borro as a jumping off point to tour the hill towns-there is something romantic about seeing castles lit at night - however you will need to rent a car. We took the train to Rome and to Florence-the station is about 25 minutes away. This is the perfect holiday for couples - and we will go back next year! I guess you could say that I left my soul in Tuscany!

We first heard of this wonderful place from a travel article in the local Dallas newspaper about a year ago. We then had friends that spent a week there in Oct/05 and they RAVED about it. So, we booked our (delayed) honeymoon there for the first week of April.

We were very early in the season for them and for the area, so there were very few people staying the week we were there. The afternoon we drove in -- about 2:30pm -- we were greeted by Simona, who immediately put us at ease, spent time explaining how the Borro operated, and even called over to the Osteria to have them stay open for us to get a bite to eat (they close at 2:30 for lunch). Simona was gracious, friendly, VERY helpful and is a real asset to Il Borro's operations!

We stayed in the Cipresso apartment in the Poggio Piano farmhouse at the south end of the estate -- about a 3 minute drive away from Admin. and the village. It was set on a bluff, with a valley behind us, olive and grape fields around us and an outstanding view of San Giustino Valdarno -- the town next door, to the NE of Il Borro. Two bedrooms, two full baths, a complete kitchen and complete comfort. The pictures at their website tell it EXACTLY like this place is!

We ate twice at the Osteria in the ancient village (not counting the breakfasts) and were always greeted warmly by Fabio, the 25 year old partner (of five) in the ownership/management of the restaurant (which is separate from Il Borro's operations). Fabio speaks excellent English and has put together a wonderful menu that reflects the fresh ingredients and local styles of cooking. My wife and I are foodies and love to cook, and this crew has put together a first class operation at such a young stage in life -- they will go far! Highly recommended.

The rest of our meals were either cooked in, using things we bought in San Giustino, or at some of the towns we toured each day. We generally planned on big lunches at a location and light dinners back in the apt, or light lunches and then dinner at the Osteria. We chose not to do dinner "out and about" beyond San Giustino because it's very dark and confusing when traveling at night when you are unfamiliar with the local roads. There is, however, another wonderful Osteria literally 500 meters down the road from Poggio Piano's turnoff that is also recommended.

You are an hour from Florence, 1.5 hours from Sienna and the Chianti region, 45 minutes from Arezzo, 1.5 hours from Anghiari and Cortona, and 30 minutes from Loro. Grab a mountain bike and ride around the area. Sit and do nothing for an afternoon. Tour the great "old & new" winery and get the history of it from Sara. There is so much to do that a week just flies by.

The 1350 Euros is a tremendous value for this place, especially when one considers the typical Tuscan breakfast included, the daily maid "tidy up" service, the security and the tremendous lengths the staff go to to make you feel welcome, at home and comfortable.

Just remember this: you are staying at an estate in the COUNTRYSIDE of Tuscany. You are not staying at a 4 star hotel in Florence or Rome. There is no room service, there is no valet, there is no concierge, and staff is not there to snap to your every whim and desire at a moment's notice. It is a working vineyard and olive gardens and winery with topnotch accommodations and Osteria, and is an ideal place to relax and base your driving tours out of. Keep that in mind and you will have a WONDERFUL and relaxing time! If you want pampering and room service, stay in a city.

Stayed a week at the invitation of our best friends back in October 2005. Beautiful estate, located about 20 minutes from the Autostrada. The accommodations at Maglonino were 2 bd/2bath, kitchen, living area. We were able to walk to the Osteria for meals. Do have dinner there, it is quite good! Our only complaint, which is a major one, was Simona. We've quite decided she must be some poor relation of the Ferragamo family for there is no other way she could keep her job. Her supreme rudeness began when the four of us were checking in along with an Australian family. She was going over a laundry list of things and at the end, in a most irritated voice, she said "do not call me at 2 in the morning to ask me how to call the United States". Though Americans may be naive travelers, I happen to think we're probably some of the most pleasant, patient travelers! At check out time, Simona proceeded to bill us for long distance calls that we knew we had not made. When asked for an itemization, she screamed and practically threw a huge tantrum. But to offset her bad behavior, there was Chiara...we can't say enough about how sweet and helpful she was throughout the whole visit.
