“Heaven!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

I feel I must add to the comments that have been left on here by those of you that visited this fantastic villa and have thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. I have been to this villa 12 times now in the past 9 years and I will continue to return here every year till the villa no longer exists.

However I do get annoyed when I read the negative comments. Most of the negative feedback is about cost. How can anyone expect to travel to such a fantastic location and not pay for it. The saying goes " you get what you pay for!" and the villa certainly is value for money. If you want a cheap holiday go to Butlins or Centre Parks!

The owners of the villa Paolo and Philip couldnt be better hosts. They are always on hand to help in any situation. They join in the two evening dinners, Tuesdays and Fridays, where all the occupants get together and get to know one another!. Paolo is a great cook, I have never had a bad meal there and if you're still hungry there is always some homemade cake available or biscotti. The honesty bar is reasonable too. All in all a great place to unwind from hectic working life.
See you soon Paolo and Philip,
P.S. if you feel generous, I dont mind you leaving me the villa in your wills!!!! :) :)

Although the house and setting of Villa Fontelunga is beautiful the breakfast was not of a high standard. Also being charged £25 for a buffet consisting of a small plate of pasta and a selection of equally small canapés was not exactly value for money. When questioned about the meagre quantities one of the owners became very defensive and said this is what you pay in Italy. Having eaten some superb meals in Tuscany the previous week for half the cost this was not actually true. Finally the villa needs a better air conditioning system. I stayed in a room on the top floor in June and it was very warm. There was a simple system for blowing out cool air but it was not enough to cool the room. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism because on the whole Villa Fontelunga is a beautiful place to stay.

Dear Chockeclare, thank you for your 4 star review.
I believe the occasion of the buffet supper you are talking about occurred at a recent wedding. It was such a lovely small occasion and the bride and groom seemed to have a fantastic time, saying so when they left. So it was sad to receive this message.

All the weddings we have here are small very personal occasions and we always get very involved in every event as we really understand the couple want to have that "one off" special occasion and try to facilitate every part working with not only the bride and groom but also the caterers, florist, wedding planner etc. We are not the type of owners who leave property saying "here is the house now get on with it"!
However it can be slightly tricky dealing with the rest of the wedding party as they dont know where or what type of property they will be staying in and what services we have been asked to provide. As a result any lack of services, generally due to budget restrictions, reflects on us but are generally out of our control. An example off the top of my head would be the cloak room at the property and keeping it clean and tidy during the wedding which of course with everybody drinking and having fun by 9.30 it can look like a bomb has hit it. If no member of our staff has been provided to keep it clean again this will reflect on us. Another example would be when we are not providing the drinks for the wedding party as they would like to bring in their own and of course as they are renting the property in exclusivity they can absolutely do as they wish. However then we can't properly serve drinks to the clients who can't understand why, whilst we are still expected to take away the empties, wash the glasses and take away the rubbish etc, it gets complicated. Similar issues happen with the food we are asked, and agree, to provide for the budget. So when even more people turn up at the last minute which happen in the case above and we swallow the cost of some of the group and then we receive a complaint about the quantity of food provided after we have also opened several bottles of our own prosecco outside the budget as a gift to the wedding couple, it is not very pleasant to have someone complain about what you are providing.

What must also be said is that we are not a restaurant and we do not have restaurant facilities. Our catering is exclusively for our clients, every occasion is a private function where we get in specially for that occasion staff to facilitate the event and cater specifically for any client that has some dietary requirements; because of this we charge accordingly. We don’t have a Michelin stared restaurant but the lady who cooks for us has been with us for 12 years and cooks the most delicious "traditional Tuscan home food" which I have had the pleasure of eating and dream of eating when ever I am away from Tuscany. I am very happy that our client can sample her cuisine. I feel very privileged to have such a talented and consistent cook working for us for all these years and i don't know what I would do without her. Well probably loose weight!

May be I have been rattling on a bit here but we try very hard, our aim being for every client to leave here having had the best holiday experience and sometimes we feel the need to explain when something doesn't work out as it was supposed to like our clients feel the need to vent their frustration when they don't get what they expected.

Oh yes and the air-conditioning - the reason that the air was not cold was that we hadn't switched over the system from heating to air-conditioning! This year we have had such strange drops in temperature (due probably to global warming caused by too many air conditioners!!!!) even last week having a night time temperature of only 8 degrees, we couldn't be sure to switch over the system. We have now!!

Anyway I suppose I have to accept what Abraham Lincon said: "you can please all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time"!

This was our second time at Fontelunga and it certainly won't be our last. As soon as you arrive it is pure bliss. Very relaxing and incredibly easy to wind down from hectic London life. We found some more beautiful restaurants in the area this time yet I imagine we haven't even scratche the surface. If you are looking for a relaxing break in beautiful surroundings then this is the place! Thanks Philip as Paolo!

Dear Dj Dando, thank you for your great review. The Jubille weekend that you were here was full of our returning clients and had such a great atmosphere! I will not forget our pizza evening made all the more memorable by your efforts! All the best to you both and we'll look forward to seeing you here in the future. Philip

My friend Clarice and I spent the Jubilee weekend at this charming property on the Tuscany borders. Our room was pretty and functional and the bathroom spacious with lovely views over the surrounding countyside, the room however was directly above the kitchen and therefore not very quiet. In fact the whole house was not very quiet which was somethiong we had not thought about. It's eight rooms in a grand old house with little if no sound prooofing between them coupled with the fact that the plumbing is extremely noisy. So remember to pack ear plugs or be prepaered to be woken up when another guest flushes the toilet at 5am. Other things to note which were a tad disappointing, the pool is quite small and not very pretty, it could do with a makeover. The breakfast buffet was limited and the fruit salad was tinned which is really unnecssary when there is so much fresh stuff around. There was little or no comfortable outdoor seating to curl up in and read a book or chat with friends. It is a lovely location but note quite the releaxing boutique hotel we thought it would be. The two hosts were charming but I think they have got stuck in a rut and don't appreciate that some nice little touches, like fresh flowers in the rooms were missing, which is a pity. Love Dotty.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the front of the house for quietness or at the back for the view

Dear Dotty and Clarice,
it is always good to get constructive criticism and adding flowers to the rooms, an idea which we have always toyed with, should be that extra fresh touch we could have and will be having in the bedrooms. However we don't think adding flowers to the bedrooms is the answer in this case.

The sprit of a boutique Tuscan property, we imagine, would translate to a small property run by the owners, intimate in nature all set in a stylishly renovated old historic property. Therefore any client, when booking boutique accommodation, should expect to encounter other clients, sleep in close (well relatively!!!) proximity and therefore be accepting of mingling with the other guests. In short the type of people that enjoy a "home style" spirit whilst sleeping in a property which also has its own historic but natural groans and moans.

So if you are looking to stay in Tuscany where you exchange travel stories with the other guests, chat with the owners and get a real in site into Tuscan life, in a contemporary "informal luxury" environment then Villa Fontelunga is the one for you.

If however you are looking to stay at a formal Relais establishment with all its pomp and pretence and no interaction with the staff or other guests, then Villa Fontelunga is not for you.

It is true to say that the weekend Dotty and Clarice chose to stay at the villa we had virtually all the other rooms occupied (by coincidence) with returning guests so the property took on a rather house party atmosphere. The clients knew one another or knew of one another. We actually felt very proud, during this particular weekend, of the extended global family that we have created here over the last 12 years: A rut that we are quite happy to be stuck in if it brings back so many. Actually, unprompted, the next review is from a client who stayed exactly the same period of Dotty and Clarice and had the most fantastic stay.

The busy weekend did mean that much of our more than ample outside seating areas, like our 12 seater gazebo with fireplace, were occupied with people chatting socializing and generally enjoying being on holiday with fellow travelers leaving little space for those not wishing to be social.

The reality is Dotty came out to stay at Fontelunga as a friend of one of the owners with a large discount to look for a location for his birthday.

May be this is not the right channel to voice your opinion where a private email would have been more appropriate in this instance.
This is the real pity.

My husband and I have just returned from a fantastic ten day holiday in Tuscany and can't recommend Villa Fontelunga enough. Paolo & Philip are fantastic hosts and extremely helpful-their information sheets on where to visit were invaluable, as was their recommendations on where to eat, we didn't have a bad meal. We enjoyed Florence and Siena, along with Montepulciano and Pienza. A particular highlight was visiting the Avigonesi winery and enjoying the wine over an excellent lunch. We can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: One with a view over the garden, morning views were outstanding

A few days escape from London could not have been more enjoyable thanks to the warmth of the owners of villa Fontelunga. It's a charming manor house transformed by creativity and personal touches. I could have spend the days lazing by the gorgeous pool but the location is spoiling with plenty of hill top towns a short distance away. The lights of Cortona twinkle in the distance at night and after an excellent recommendation for dinner (a local restaurant filled with old farming implements on the walls and the most incredible local home cooking) we spent several hours with a night cap by the fire in the gazebo. Nothing is too much for the owners who are on hand to advise on places to visit including the fabulous outlet village towards Florence. Our return flight was on the new late night one from Pisa (BA around 22.30) which meant a delicious pizza for supper in gorgeous Lucca just 40 mins from the airport. We loved Fontelunga and it's incredible sense of ease/ relaxation. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Front facing on the first floor ensures high ceiling and gorgeous morning views of the hazy mist ove...

Other than the odd misuse of trip advisor for personal gain or vindictive attacks, the reviews clearly show what Villa Fontelunga has to offer and so I'll not waste the readers time going over those same qualities.

Suffice to say, we get little holiday time available to us, due to heavy work commitments yet we still choose to come back time and time again to this simply fabulous place safe int he knowledge that the owners will do anythign they can to make us and every other guest we have ever met there have the most relaxing and comfortable stay possible.

Here's to the next ten times, Phillip, Paulo et al.
