“A beautiful and strangely empty castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We stayed at Gargonza as a family of 5 in an apartment ( Argentine) and ate at the restaurant on 2 nights. The food was good but not spectacular and the kitchen was visibly overwhelmed by having to serve about 7 tables .The castle is undeniably a special place , atmospheric and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay but found that the service was a bit stretched as they tend to staff up for weddings. Worth a visit as long as you make sure there is not an event on at the same time.

We basically had the castle to ourselves for two days after a late booking in July as they were preparing for a wedding. The castle is stunning and authentic and the pool is lovely although a bit of a trek down the hill. The service was very good and attentive and the restaurant adjacent serves delicious food at a reasonable cost given the quality. We stayed in a standard double and it was very basic for €140/night with breakfast. Obviously an actual castle will struggle with modern amenities but with no air conditioning the fan was noisy / rickety and the furnishings dated (not medieval dated, more 70s dated..). The shower was bad too. Breakfast was good and the garden area is stunning. We were kept up one night by foxes / owls and various creatures of the night howling but we found it rather amusing in that setting! (and obviously that's not the hotel's fault!)

Dear Billy Ward,

thank you very much for your comments which clearly represent our village castle. I am very happy the restaurant was good and that you enjoyed the breakfast as well. Unfortunately the pool has been located a little bit outside since the village is listed in the italian heritage. That is why we had to put it outside. Regarding the rooms, I am not sure in which room you where staying but all our bathrooms were rennovated starting from 2005 except an apartment with two double bedrooms and living area which is truly as you say "seventies style" but that's when we started!
What can Isay about AC. Air conditioning is a problem because we are a listed building and we can't put anything on top of the roofs. we have some superior rooms with AC but we had to struggle to find space to put the AC generators. It is really hard to work on old buildings.
Regarding the price, you probably were in a classic room but costs to maintain Gargonza are outstanding and we struggle already to keep up the tower!
I hope to have you back again in Gargonza and in the meanwhile I send you my best regards,

Neri Guicciardini

We just left from Tuscanny, and loved our stay at the castle so much that we decided to take one day off from sightseeing to enjoy the castle amenities. The staff was knowledgable and had a strong grasp of speaking English, and they were very accommodating. We arrived mid afternoon, unaware that there was nowhere nearby to eat, as the restaurants were in their midday break. The front desk got us in touch with one of the kitchen staff, who in turn gave us plates of bread, cheese and fruits to tide us over until dinner.

Emmanuel was an excellent cook, and made us 2 made to order sandwiches, as well as served us later that evening for dinner. Everything was great!

We stayed in the pietrino room, or number 7, which was beautiful. This is a room for the fit and adventurous, as the stone steps are fairly steep and the wooden steps to the 2nd floor are steep enough to be like stairs to a treehouse. The room was otherwise excellent.

Some notes of caution on the location of the castle - the roads to the area are very windy and not for those who get motion sickness. Plan an extra 20 minutes of time to get to a straighter roadway. Great location for winery tours and Siena, a bit of a drive for florence visits, and a trek for pisa visits.

Al that said, the grounds and the pool and restaurant are excellent, as are the staff.

Room Tip: Email about the rooms if you have any issues with climbings steps, as the steps are a solid workout!

My husband and I stayed here a few years ago on a tour of Tuscany. It was beautiful, comfortable and quiet. We did some sleuthing around the castle on our own. Not sure if you can still do that ; ) We picked up some meat, cheese, bread, coffee and chocolate at a family owned "deli" on our way out of Gorgonza. It was magical.

What a great place... From the moment we pulled in to day we drove off to continue our trip of Italy. It was amazing. We started out vacation there as a close friend was getting married there, so we had a nice group of people staying on the property. The rooms were warm and inviting with fireplaces, and amazing views from our room were breathtaking . The staff was awesome welcoming us with a glass of wine to take the edge off of traveling and help us settle in to our stay.
The restaurant and staff awesome, food amazing both the breakfast up at the castle wit fresh baked breads and coffee.
The main restaurant down the hill was fantastic as well the staff was accomidating and very welcoming as if in our friends home. They shared recipes and stories and became friends.

The location was also great for day trips, as we went to Sienna about a 40 min ride, also to a couple of wineries in the Chianti region .
I would recommend to anyone who wants a great experience, and look forward to returning soon.

My wife and I spent a few nights here for once of my close friend's weddings and I have to say thank you to the staff who made an already amazing event even more special. The staff were more accommodating than anyone I have come across in any form of accommodation, they went the extra mile time and time again. Whether it was organising impromptu dinners for 30 people on a Sunday night with only a few hours notice or bringing drinks and snacks down to the pool upon request, noting was too difficult. Special thanks goes to Emanualle who we all got to know quite well, he was so happy and so attentive (and patient!), even helping me fine tune a few Italian words to include in my speech!

The castle was beautiful and the rooms clean and well kept. Its obviously not a luxury 5 star hotel, but what can beat staying in a real castle? The views were breathtaking and could be seen from the pool, the rooms and even the restaurant. Food and drink was absolutely top notch, whether it be at poolside, in the room or at the restaurant.

When the time came to pay the bill after 3 days and nights of eating and drinking (quite a bit of drinking, it was a wedding after all!) my wife and I were surprised by how little we had to pay.

All in all 5 out of 5 - a great place, great people and a great experience! Thank you to all the staff.

The setting is incomparable - a centuries-old stone walled village perched on a wooded hilltop. The rooms and suites are the actual homes of families who once lived there, and named for them. The award-winning renovation has left the look and feel intact while providing every convenience to guests. And the staff is warm and welcoming. And I almost forgot the hotel's hillside pool area overlooking the Tuscan hills. Siena really is a 40 minute drive away, mostly autostrada, and the Castello is 20 minutes from the main N-S A1 between Florence and Rome. Great restaurant, too.

Room Tip: The rooms are actual homes and are unique. The open-hearth fireplaces in the living rooms of suites...
