“Great escape”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

The Cat Ba Eco Lodge was a great escape from days of exploring the hectic but fun Ha Noi. I was in contact with the lodge a month before the trip and they helped me arrange the bus ride (via Hoang Long Bus). This was pretty smooth and met up with a bus ticket saleswoman the night before we headed to Cat Ba island. THe only problem was the bus driver dropped us at the wrong intersection than arranged and had to deal with some predatory xe om operators, i would suggest just heading to Cat Ba town and catching the Cat Ba Eco lodge nightly (10am/5:30pm ) shuttle to the resort.

The room we got was adequate and clean and we had a great time exploring that part of Cat Ba island on foot and bicycle (for a small fee), we arranged a kayak rental with Blue Swimmer (seems to be closely affiliated with Sui Goi/Cat Ba Eco-Lodge) and explored the fish markets and monkey island. Food on the resort was above average and decently priced, we enjoyed getting a cocktail or beer and sitting in the gardens before getting dinner.

Overall a wonderful place and a nice change from your usual accomdations around Vietnam.

I had really high expectations ahead of visiting the Eco lodge but it didn't live up to billing.
Pros
- location is great and a welcome relief from cat ba town (which is like a med resort town)
- staff really friendly and good fun
- good mix of nationalities staying there which adds to atmosphere
- close to nature so plenty of interesting things to see and hear day and night
Cons
- food was ok but the "barbecue" was underwhelming and expensive for what it was
- the website advertised trek bikes for hire but there was only pushbikes available
- walls between rooms are wafer thin. You need ear plugs for a decent night's sleep.
Good place to stay if you want to chill and relax for a few days.

the surrounding area is really beautiful, which we appreciated even more after staying in cat ba town for a night. I would definately recomend not staying in cat ba town if you are going to the island and the eco lodge is a wonderful alternative. the staff are very friendly, however do not expect to be waited on hand and foot. if you need anything you have to go and ask, but this is good as it leaves you to enjoy the peaceful environment. the food is not the best i have experience in vietnam but definately not the worst, the meat BBQ is a bit expensive for what you get. we also did a tour which they recomended, we joined 10 others for a day trip and payed $40 each. it was lovely.

New Yorker currently living in Bangkok -- I came to Vietnam with one absolute must do and that was go to Cat Ba Island-- and avoid the overly touristy places as much as possible (read- Cat Ba Town- avoid it unless you are booking a guide / tour). I couldn't have asked for a more tranquil, serene, and fun experience at CatBaEco. The first day I got here I was recovering from overscams and getting scammed left and right in Hanoi; and was welcomed by an incredibly friendly staff and surrounding village. However- if you are looking for a high end, destination spa with Marriott customer service -- this is not the place for you and doesn't advertise to be so!! It is a simple, laid back place and although you aren't waited on hand and foot you feel like you're hanging out at your friend's house. I was traveling alone and spent over two hours hangin out with the hotel staff and their visitors. If you stay here cut loose- grab a bike and explore the village, go for a hike right behind the hotel, or go for a swim in the hot springs! And despite all the complainta about food on here I thought it was great. Order the Vietnamese specialties and you can't go wrong!

We had planned two nights in the ecolodge but prolonged our stay for two more nights as we enjoyed the tranquility of the place and loved its location. It is surrounded by the jungle and karst mountains of the Cat Ba national park. There is a natural spring within 200m with a pool for cooling down when it's hot...crystal clear, cold water right from the mountain! A bliss when it's hot. The staff is super friendly and we took part in a free cooking class which was great fun. The rooms are clean but as the lodges are made of wood, you can hear the jungle, rain, frogs or neighbours. For anyone who wants to get away from the masses, relax and has more time, this is a wonderful, peaceful place...

I agree with a previous post: the walls are very thin and you can hear everything guests are saying/doing in the next room. The food was overpriced and not so good, probably the worst food I've had in Vietnam-fyi I live in Vietnam. There is no toehr option for dinning unless you're willing to pay for an expensive cab ride to town. The staff is nice, somewhat helpful. The place is a bit overpriced for what it is and the service but I guess you're paying for the location ( stunning), but again there are more beautiful places elsewhere in Vietnam.

Our experience here was terrible. No advice offered about what to do in the local area, the worst, the most overpriced food we have had in Vietnam ( nothing fresh, all deep fried rubbish), unclean rooms. We sat and had a drink after the worst dinner and were ignored by staff all night. It was a total joke.
Don't waste your money by staying here it is truly horrendous.

Room Tip: Do not state here.
