“missing tourists”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

This water themed luxury resort is pretty flashy by Vietnamese standards ; lots of refreshingly cool rooms with great views ,a Pirate themed Cave that has a bar with live music meandering paths flanked by well kept gardens ,massage and beauty spa rooms , two sparkling pools and a water-slide on a hillside that spills into Halong Bay with a private beach . . . HOWEVER for some strange reason in a hotel capable of holding 100s , i was 1 of 13 people staying over for a few days .
I made full use of the entire resort (excluding the water slide because it was not working) , the staff were helpful ,the food was alright (not really up with other luxury resorts),the relaxation massuers are the best in Vietnam !
The place would have been fantastic in its 'hey day' and buzzing with excited tiddly tourists chatting all over the resort ,but sadly for some reason (that escapes me) the 'tourists are missing'
If there was a GOOD button as opposed to an Average & Very Good one here, they would get it.

Room Tip: Ask to choose your room after a site inspection, may as well pick the best spot !

After having read the reviews we decided to stay 2 nights at this hotel and while this place has amazing potential the customer service is shocking. We were woken up each morning by the noise of the staff and their high heels screaming to each other in the hallways, our deluxe room satellite signal did not work correctly, the toilet had to be fixed and the safe looked at during our stay. We had also missed breakfast the first day but due to the fact there were only 3 rooms used in the hotel they mentioned we could go down later, they had no coffee or juice and only gave us an egg, all the while the waitress was shaking her head saying we were too late. On trying to organise tours they tried to get us to do a $200 tour of the island and after explaining in depth a number of times what we were wanting we ended up going into town and booking the tour there.

One thing that redeemed this hotel was the incredible food and selection on the room service menu, however none of the staff could speak any English so it took about 7 attempts to order and even then we did not always get what we requested even after pointing at the menu.

Amex is also listed on the site as a card that is accepted but surprise, surprise this was not the case!!!

We stayed one night in the hotel. The price is too expensive compared to other hotel in Cat Ba and in Vietnam.

The main swimming pool was not working. The small one was.
The rooms are nice, nice bathroom. But the beds are really too hard.
The breakfast is nice.

The hotel is not situated in the center of Cat Ba.

This place was a nightmare! We pre purchased this hotel on Agoda (this was the first and ONLY time i have not checked out tripadvisor, silly me) we rang the hotel for a pick at the ferries dock. They forgot about us. So we rang them again. Again they forgot and finally after waiting for 2 and a half hours we got picked up and charged $40. Arrived at the hotel to be met with what looked to be a run down ghost town. Our first shock was the main pools were empty! No water. There were massive watersides that looked like they have not been used since the 80s. We just imagined if parents had there kids with them, how can you explain they cant use the water sides? Even i wanted to use the water sides! We had payed for room with ocean views the most expensive room in the house. The staff took us to the bottom floor. We questioned this and asked if we could have a room near the top floor as we payed for it. She grunted 'we are full'. Later we clearly found we were the ONLY people in the resort along with 2 other couples. We later found out by a staff member the resort is owned by a Russian man who visits once a year for tax purposes. Everything started to make sense. What a waste of what could be a very beautiful well managed resort.

Room Tip: No matter how much you pay. You will get the room on the bottom floor

When you first arrive you will be saying things like "wow, what a view" and "look at that sunrise". But unfortunately, location isn't everything.

First off, it's a half of a mile walk up hill to the resort, which is fine if you pay a local motorbike for about 1 USD or 20,000 VND. No problem.

The receptionists are nice and welcoming and the resort is beautiful with two pools and access to the beach. NOTE: There is no private beach unless you consider the sand behind a brick wall the beach.

Here's the bad. The electricity is terrible, the shower doesn't drain, the water in the shower fluctuates from hot to cold with extreme variances. I actually timed it every 6 seconds to move away from the shower to not burn myself. The beds are so hard that your body actually goes numb from laying on the bed. I had to wrap myself in the comforter like a sleeping bag. The power went off every few hours and it was a guarantee that the AC would shut off at around 5 every morning.

They make you wear this uncomfortable wrist band so security, who really doesn't care anyhow, can harass you when you try to come into the resort at night.

They do offer free shuttles to the port, but overall IT'S FAR TO OVERPRICED FOR WHAT YOU GET.

My recommendation is that you choose to drop the money and stay at the SUNRISE hotel or just stay at a cheaper hotel and know exactly what you'll be getting for what you pay for.

We won't be staying there ever again.

Lack of competition for higher grade lodging, this place knows they have the corner on the market. The service is mediocre at best (pool staff apparently too lazy to "open" the water slide, a room key that took 2 days to get properly fixed), food (even simple tea and coffee) that was below par, mosquito infested rooms, and a debris from the remodeling that is going on left laying around (no indication of clearing it off in the 3 nights we were there and the grass was tall around it). It is definitely helpful to have a "private" area of the pool away from the throngs at the beach and the family suites are plenty spacious, but you will have to determine your priorities!

December is clearly not the busiest time on Cat Ba. I'm guessing only 10 rooms in this mega hotel were occupied at the time we were there. That's probably why we got a sweet deal on the room. We booked it through Agoda.com, which has been a very helpfull site in booking hotel rooms all through Asia.
If you have to pay full price for your room, find another place to stay. It's not worth it.
The hotel itself is clearly the biggest hotel on Cat Ba, although there are several mega-building sites on the island, so there's more to come. The hotel wasn't all that bad, bit it felt very abandoned due to the lack of guests. The room was very spacious and clean. The bathroom in itself was larger than some other hotel rooms we spent time in.
The only other guest on our floor seemed to have cought a cold on a boat trip or so. He was coughing quite loud all night. We're good sleepers, so it didn't bother us for long. But if you're a light sleeper: beware of the thin walls. If the hotel is crowded I'm guessing you'll need daytime naps on the beach or so.

From the center of Cat Ba town it's about a 10 minute walk to the hotel. When you first get there, just walk into any bar and ask if someone can bring you up the hill with a scooter, so you don't have to carry your bags. It'll cost you a few dollars, but it saves you a sweaty haul up to the hotel. Breakfast was OK, but nothing fancy.
There is one (1) computer in the lobby of the hotel which guests can use, free of charge. But you'll have to wait for the staff (or their girlfriends) to end their online card game before you get the chance to use it... Not very service minded indeed...
Bottom line: wouldn't go back unless maybe with children, the pools and fenced of garden and beach would probably be nice for them.
