“Great wedding, not so great room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2010

We attended a wedding at the Whistledown recently and as a wedding venue it certainly ticks all the boxes. The bar is small and intimate yet big enough for all guests to gather. The function room was very good - lovely decor and all tables presented beautifully.
The food was very good - just far too much! The service was very professional and unobtrusive.

My main problem with our stay was our bedroom. It was located up in the attic of the property and it had not been refurbished. The bed - a zip and link bed - was very comfortable. (Don't understand why people have such a problem with these types of bed - they are six foot wide!) However the furniture was very basic, cheap and very old pine furniture. The TV was a small 15 inch portable which was set very low. The bathroom sink was blocked which was pretty inconvenient and as three of the four spot lights in the bathroom were not working touching up the make up was not easy. We paid £110 - just under the standard rack rate - same as other guests who were staying in far superior bedrooms.

Breakfast was very good and any interaction with staff was pleasant. The weather on the morning of departure was sunny and the view from the front of the property was stunning. All in all a good hotel for a short break away but make sure you ask for one of the refurbished room if you aren't getting a good discount.

The rooms are very large as European Hotels go and very reasonable at 80 pounds a night. They take almost all credit cards and have more bars in the hotel than you will be able to find. The service was excellent and the staff was the friendliest I have encountered while traveling abroad. If you are traveling to Northern Ireland you should checkout the The Whistledown Hotel/Restaurant you will not be disappointed.

The Hotel was in a superb location overlooking Carlingford Lough.
The rooms were excellent with comfortable beds and the ensuite bathroom was very modern.
The staff were all friendly and helpful.
All hotels should be run like this!

Have stayed in the whistledown on several occasions...inc last sat night...as always the hotel was spotlessly clean, the staff attentive, the room serviced with all you could want (we did have some special requests for the kids which were dealt with effortlessly), the food and service in the bar and restaurant was topclass. I did note the three stars on the main entrance....this hotel should definitely be at least a 4 star...they have no pool, and maybe that effected the rating. What they have in their grounds is a superb kiddies playpark for all ages, including a 'Queens castle' my 5 yr old informed me. Honestly...one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in...well worth the visit...make sure and stay if you are in the vicinity. The staff are efficient and friendly...the jewel in the Crown for service being the manager (I think) Josie.......will be back in August....couldnt stay anywhere else in Mourne now!

The staff at the hotel were as helpful as could be - nothing was too much trouble. We were a large group of extended family and friends and the food and service was universally praised. Thanks Josie and all the team!

I stayed in the Whistledown two weeks ago for the Blues festival. It was hard to judge the entrance, as the place was quite packed. Seemed like we were walking into a pub. However, the room was lovely (once we had opened the window - bit stuffy at first). The room was very large with great views. The bathroom was modern and new. And the best thing, the room was very dark in the morning! We had a great lie-in. We ate in the restaurant, didn't have to queue for a table at all. The food was delicious and very reasonable. And the staff overall couldn't have been friendly or more helpful, both in the hotel and the restaurant.

Were in town for Blues on the bay festival and were attending the function in this hotel on Saturday night but were not resident so we were in the bar and restaurant only. They were packed with the Blues festival , and I think a wedding also. Staff very friendly. There is no booking in the restaurant so we were given a buzzer and asked to wait in the bar for 30 -40 minutes. In about 30 minutes we got the call and went to the very large and busy restaurant upstairs with a great view of the bay. We ordered 2 starters between 4 and 4 main courses, two of which were fillet steak cooked med. rare. Service was pleasant and efficient. Due to the crowds, I suspected that the steaks would not arrive as requested, but they were perfectly cooked and of good quality and substantial in size. The other two meals, one a curry and the other a chicken dish were equally well liked by our friends. We couldnt speak for all the wine prices on the list but the one we ordered was exactly as we have in Belfast if we see it on the restaurant list there and it was very much more reasonably priced so that was a bonus, except that we had an extra one and then it wasnt! We enjoyed our visit to the Whistledown on this occasion and will visit again when we won't be rushing to go to a concert and maybe sit and enjoy the beautiful view
