“Idyllic local”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

When in Istria, see Pula, Rovinj, Porec, and the many Hill Towns, but spend your nights in Brtonigla at the beautiful and very peaceful Hotel San Rocco. We had a lovely and spacious Tradition Room, with a distant view of the Adriatic. Their award-winning restaurant serves fabulous food, on a beautiful covered outdoor patio. The hotel/restaurant staff were extremely courteous, friendly, and a delightful addition to this idyllic location.

Based on the reviews of this hotel, we were excited to stay here during our recent trip to Croatia. However we were underwhelmed and rather disappointed by our stay, particularly given the high season room rates.

When we arrived at the hotel, the staff was unable to locate our reservation. This led to some confusion, and eventually to us being told that they had extra rooms that night so it wouldn't be a problem. Upon checkout the staff had found the reservation, but there was still some confusion about what I had pre-paid.

Our room was located on the top floor and was very small, with a tiny window that barely let in light. The bathroom was cramped and lit by a florescent light, something I would expect to find in a budget hotel. The biggest problem however came later in the evening. When we returned to our room it was uncomfortably warm. We called the desk and the staff person who came upstairs told us to "wait" because the A/C would probably eventually cool it down. After waiting 30 minutes with no change, we went downstairs again to request a fan. The staff did not know whether or not they had a fan, and told us they would look. About 45 minutes (and several calls downstairs) later, one of the employees finally brought up a fan, which helped. At no time did anyone suggest switching our room, and at over $200 USD per night, I expect a room that is not too hot for me to sleep in. The hotel did take 10% off our final bill as an apology.

The overall facilities are fine, but nothing particularly special. The pool area is pleasant, and was a nice place to be in the summer heat. One odd thing is that they don't have pool towels out for the guests to use, and they should consider more lounge chairs given the number of guests.

We ate dinner at the restaurant, which was quite good. There was also a very good wine selection to go with the meal. A bit pricey, but that seemed to be the trend in August in Croatia in the tourist areas. Breakfast was included in the room price, which was nice. The breakfast selection was standard for Europe, and good enough.

We visited this restaurant because chef cooked on Food festival in Umag during the ATP. Hotel and restaurant is very beatifull and romantic. We ordered fish degustation menu and tryed istriand red wine which was amazing. Service(2waiterss) was good but I do not know if they were busy but they did not take care obout us. They had 4 tables outside and 2tables inside but this is the management problem.Food was excellent, higher gastronomy. We will come back!

We recently spent three nights with friends in this rural setting where we wanted to relax and enjoy the pool. We had a traditional room which was large with a queen size bed, desk, wardrobe & sofa. The bathroom was very small with the shower a capsule where you could barely turn around. The smaller comfort rooms had bathrooms twice the size. The garden/ pool area was lovely but the motorway noise from one kilometre away was very noticeable, detracting from the ambience. The food in the restaurant was lovely & the staff attentive while you where in the restaurant. However if you where in the hotel things were different. The main problem we had with this hotel was the lack of hospitality. Everywhere we had travelled in Croatia we had enjoyed great hospitality with hotels going out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our visit. At San Rocco you had to go searching for staff. If you wanted a pool towel you had to ask as there was never any left, then you got a damp one that had just been washed. Please just buy some more towels! Nothing was complimentary, no welcome drinks, no water. At checkout the staff member had a handful of odd receipts which took some time to work out how much to charge us, there seemed to be no way we could trace the charges. This place has great potential but needs to attend to its in house guests more to achieve this.

Room Tip: Go for a comfort room if you want a large bathroom

Beautiful small family-run hotel with lovely garden and outdoor pool, kind and attentive staff. Wi-fi a bit dodgy, not really surprising in this rural spot. Food in the restaurant is lovely, but the fact that the menu does not change is a bit of a drawback when you stay for one week, as we did. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our room on second floor had beams not very good for tall folks

We stayed at san rocco at the end of a midweek in Istria, on our way to the airport.
A truly relaxed and relaxing setting and atmosphere. Great staff.
But what really made the visit worth it, was the dinner. Slow food at its best. We had a fish menu. Well-built, original, from local ingredients, not too heavy. More, the wines choice was ab-so-lu-te-ly fantastic. Pefect build-up from young easy white to an extremely delicate and rich, 10-year old local white. Bravo for the sommelier!

not the easiest to find but it's well worth the car ride, lovely and homely hotel which kept traces of history with its wooden beams. The service made all the difference and food is amazing.

Only cons is there is limited wifi in the room (might be an isolated incident).
