Owner description: Experience New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption come to life! Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. Today at the Buried Village encounter the world class Museum of Te Wairoa, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, experience the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Wairere Falls.

“It's a part fo NZ's history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

Take the road to Lake Tarawera, the village is located passed the Green lake.
Te Wairoa was buried by a violent eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.
There is a museum and an archeological site with full descriptions of what was buried and destructed by the volcano.
It is privately run, a good initiative to preserve the history of the area.
Obviously is not as spectacular and not as archeologically important as Pompei and Ercolano in Italy (destructed by the volcano Vesuvio) but is still interesting and worth the visit.

Thanks for the great response. Yes the stories of the people of Te Wairoa are very interesting and make the village come alive. The Museum provides exhibits of Te Wairoa from the early settlers, to the Geological Wonders: The Pink and White Terraces, and excavated objects over 100 years old!

The walk around the park is easy and informative. The staff suggested we take the time to walk to the waterfalls which is a steep decent and steep incline but so worth the walk.Great attraction

“a real slice of history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

NZ is a wonderful place, that's a given.
From a tourist perspective (as a Kiwi travelling around or a visitor to our shores) genuine historical sites are often little more than views or paddocks. This represents some genuine NZ history in all it's shocking detail.
Having last visited in 03 it has certainly developed since then and is one of the many "must see" things in the Rotorua district

“Awesome!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

Love this place, the staff were wonderful. We asked them a couple of questions regarding the site and they truly know their stuff. We had a great look around and then went to their cafe. Again lovely Staff and their prices are fantastic. Can't speak highly enough of The Buried Village.
