Owner description: Experience New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption come to life! Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. Today at the Buried Village encounter the world class Museum of Te Wairoa, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, experience the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Wairere Falls.

We had a really nice drive up there from Rotorua , stopped over at a lake which was really nice too. But the museum didn't really interest me as much, even though it was good to know the history if you were patient enough, but I enjoyed the walk next to the waterfall!

Hi Linda

Thanks for coming to visit us at Buried Village and taking time to respond. I am sorry to hear you didn't find the museum as interesting as hoped. The purpose of the museum is to provide history of Mount Tarawera and the tragedy that happened at Te Wairoa.

“Worth a visit”

This is a must do in Rotorua - very interesting we went on the guided tour which was included in the entry price and found it very informative and interesting. The tea rooms were great - good food and coffee.

“Exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Very nicely presented museum and grounds with audio/video guide via iPod, contemporaneous accounts and artefacts. The stories of the various inhabitants and visitors of Te Wairoa are presented in an engaging and interesting way and successfully evoke a sense of the nineteenth century village. Grounds include a waterfall walk. Nice tea shop.

Thank you kindly for a five star review. It is great to see you enjoyed the electronic tour devices. Our electronic devices share such significant stories of Tarawera before, during, and after the eruption. Our grounds are the original Village which makes the stories come to life as you enter the very sites which once housed the people of Te Wairoa. Our Waterfall trail is a pleasant surprise for those who adventure down to the base! Please come back in the near future!

“worth the trip out”

This is really good to put the tourist history of Rotorua in perspective. The displays are good and you really get a sense of what the early visitors had to do and the catastrophe that struck in 1866.
