I just returned from a week stay at Mathevies, and happily recommend it to anyone who likes a quiet, low-key, yet still friendly and fun camping experience. This was my first time camping in France, and I love that we were "roughing it" with fresh bread and pastries delivered directly to the campsite! Not to mention that the bar serves very tasty wines by the glass for 1.50 euros. The food and beverage prices in general seemed very fair to me, considering the quality - the quiche made from eggs from the farm down the road was really delicious!
It's an especially good spot for families with kids. My 5-yr-old left the campground very sad to be leaving of a couple of new "best friends".
Finally, we loved that we easily filled a week with interesting and varied activities that really highlighted the attractions in the region. We hiked, canoed, saw prehistoric cave art, enjoyed chateau grounds by candlelight at sunset, went pony trekking... all easy drives from the campsite.
