This is one of those unique experiences you just have to do. We flew into Lukla (which was an experience in it's own) and then spent 10 days hiking up. Naamche Bazar is a cool place to spend some time on the way up. As you get closer to the base camp the quality of food and rooms decrease, but what can you expect?
If you're active and smart you don't need a guide. If you want it to be easy and have help carrying your gear then hire a guide and porter. It will help the local economy and isn't very expensive.
This is a pretty special trip.
