“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

Having tried desperately to get in during a previous visit to Clarens, we were all looking forward to something special during our stop over this time. The new location is somewhat off the main drag and does lack atmosphere.
Before ordering we were told that the specialty was steak…… we should have taken heed. Two of our party, including myself did have steak but two of the accompaniment sauces were not available along with chips. Which steakhouse doesn’t serve chips?!! (roast potatoes were available for some reason?) The steaks were average and by no means anything special. Other members of the group had the Rosemary Lamb Cutlets, which had a very unsavory underlying odour, a very basic vegetarian option and the Smoked Pork Neck (this dish was the best out of all the main dishes)
You also got the impression from the Chef/Owner that you could not complain; given some of his short sharp rebuffs to comments made over the exceedingly hot chilly in one of the starters.
This may have once been the place to eat, but I certainly was not impressed with the food or the dining experience. Perhaps the initial passion and interest was left behind at the old premises……
Alas, I won’t be going back.

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We had eaten here before, so booked before hand to ensure a table. Overall the meal was so disappointing. The Tomato tart was so unpleasant because of too much Balsamic, the special pork belly was tough and the sirloin was over fatty! Potatoes were dry and the veggies too sweet! The mussels were good and the tomorrow soup was delicious. But overall we won't return.

“Super dinner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

What was going to be just a "hard week, too tired to cook" Friday night dinner turned into so much more! Warm welcome, table right next to the fire, nice bottle of red.... Steak with marrow sauce was a winner. Pork belly on a passion fruit reduction with wasabi & soya sauce glaze was delicious. Unfortunately we ate too much to sample the famous whiskey bread and butter pudding, but next time - definitely!

“Best meal in Clarens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

Fantastic steak and sauce combos, and bread and butter pudding that had us licking our plates! Very friendly, good service and a great menu. Best meal we had this week in Clarens.

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Upon arrival there was only one other car parked outside - is it a bad sign, or is everyone just watching the rugby elsewhere?! We take our chances and discover a memorable experience, not just another restaurant, not just another meal...
We were seated next to the fireplace - a plus if you visit Clarens in winter. Meal orders are taken by the chef himself. The steak here is definitely a contender for the best I've ever had at a restaurant, which a beautiful "Spanish" sauce, mustard mash and beautifully prepared vegetables.
We spent more than 3 hours at the restaurant and don't regret a single second! The Phatt Chef is a must!
