“Amazing view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

A beautiful old change-house (where you waited for the ferry) in a cracking spot feet from the sea. My husband saw an otter as he unloaded our cases. Lovely room, lovely staff, great food - it even has its own standing stone! We will return!

Room Tip: Choose one of the larger rooms, the small ones are fine but a bit tight for moving around!

Just the location would get this place five stars. It is right on the southern tip of South Uist, overlooking the Sound of Barra. Lying in bed, we could watch the waves and the ever changing weather-nothing but the hotel carpark lies between the Inn and the sea. We had one of the superior rooms. It was a good size, with room for a dressing table and chair and a circular coffee table, in the window, with two additional chairs to watch the sea from. The bathroom was very attractively fitted with nice toiletries; the bed was huge and the standard of cleanliness, and cheery smile on the cleaners face second to none. Breakfast was served in the back lounge, particularly recommend the Stornaway black pudding and the locally smoked salmon. Endless coffee. Supper in the lounge bar-decent wine list, wonderful seafood-highlight was the pan fried scallops in garlic butter-never seen scallops that size before. Staff were really friendly, pleasant, obliging. A great break in an exceptional location.

The reason for our visit to the Polochar Inn was a mixture of business and pleasure, but our stay was very definitely a pleasure. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The room was very tastefully fitted out and the bed was spacious and comfortable. The on-suite was spotless and again had all the fittings, toiletries etc you would expect and require.
The shower-head was a little low but manageable and my wife enjoyed the bath which is always a good sign.
We stayed for 2 nights and although we arrived quite late on the first night we were still able to enjoy a good meal. The dinners we had were very good and the breakfasts were very well cooked and tasty.
This Inn has lots of character, welcoming staff and a fantastic location. We were able to look out our window at a stunning view that included the standing stone which is quite a bit older than 2,000 years and somewhat closer to 5,000
We would certainly not hesitate to stay at the Polochar the next time we are in South Uist and for birdwatchers and walkers it is ideally placed at the start of the Machair Way.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was great and even although it was above the external door, the noise from thi...

You know you're in the right place as soon as you arrive; a warm greeting is the tip of the service iceberg. Fanastic local seafood, spotless stylish rooms and a VIP sea view. The Polochar standing stone right outside might be over 2000 years old but this hotel experience is here and now!

Set at the tip of south uist is a traditional inn with modern bedrooms and great food.....and the scenery, the standing stone, the beach, the sunsets, the stars...all a step outside this lovely scottish inn. No midgies at this time of year too

We have just turned from a wedding celebration / stay at The Polochar Inn. This is an absolutely fantastic place and a must for visits to the Outer Hebrides. The location is perfect- beside the sea, with gorgeous white sandy beaches. The owners and staff are amazing. I have never been to a hotel where all the staff are so friendly and helpful. They made you feel really at home and nothing was too much bother. My husband and I had had an unexpectedly long and difficult journey to get there, due to the Cal Mac Ferry Viral infection, and the welcome we received on our eventual arrival was so kind. Our room was delightful. Over looking the water, the view was stunning. The room was very well appointed, very comfortable, warm, very clean. We stayed here for two nights ( it would have been three if we had arrived as planned). The wedding was wonderful. Staff again went out of their way to ensure everyone had a fantastic time. The food at the wedding was absolutely perfect, lovely portions, very well cooked, well presented. This was also true of the other meals we had in the hotel throughout our stay. My husband was taking the photographs at the wedding and again staff went out of their way to assist him, enabling use of a room for inside photographs. The owner and his wife were such lovely people, kind, friendly, happy....just total gems! We so enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend The Polochar Inn to everyone. It well deserves its Trip Advisor awards to date....and continues to provide accommodation and service at an incredibly high standard.

We stayed at Polochar Inn in April 2013 for four nights and enjoyed a fantastic stay. The Superior Room was cosy for two adults and two children but comfortable. The staff were all attentive and enthusiastic, whether recommending places to go or dishes from the excellent menu. Local fish included King Scallops, Monkfish and Smoked Haddock, all delicious, cooked with skill and very good value. The hotel is well situated to explore South Uist, Eriskay and Barra as well as the local beaches on the west coast or the hills on the east. The view of the Sound of Barra is stunning. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 31 is a Superior Room with a lovely view
