“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

Just come back from a great long weekend staying at Ogwen Bank. Really enjoyed it! We were a group of adults and teenagers and we all had a great time. We stayed in the wooden cabins which were much better than expected - clean, spacious, all mod cons, everything you could want. The setting is superb - cabins and caravans set in woodland with a gurgling, singing river providing constant company. The bar/restaurant and games room were welcoming and relaxing. Well made, home-cooked simple food, large portions - no complaints. Ogwen Bank is a great location for exploring Snowdonia - lots of hiking, mountain climbing and outdoor stuff. Also Bangor and coastal towns not far away. Yes, it rained a bit (!) but we didn't really notice and it certainly didn't dampen our enjoyment! Would definitely go again :-)

With a beautiful river valley onsite, the start of many great climbs and hikes nearby and a cosy arcade for the evenings, Ogwen Bank is the perfect place for the sports enthusiast. With a choice of good standard caravans and log cabins (for the more luxurious campers), there appeared to be accomodation to suit all needs. Due to its excellent location, we were able to squeeze in three great hikes in a Friday-Sunday weekend as well as enjoying the great food in the onsite restaurant on the last night. (Hint: get the lamb special - its massive!)

No complaints whatsoever about the cabin we stayed in, which was clean with plenty of hot water as well as good central heating to keep us warm in the evenings. A great time had by all and would highly reccomend it to other hikers tripping in the North Wales area.

Room Tip: The upgrade price to the log cabins was entirely worth it if you want to spend the weekend in a bit...

Stayed here quite a few times in a caravan it is lovely, Fantastic views an abundence of animals squirrels, birds rabbits etc.
Lovely watching them especially the squirrels knocking on the window to be fed.
Both the camp and club are well looked after the food in the club is lovely and well priced.
We like the camp so much were looking at getting our own caravan there.

Set just off the a5 close to snowdon it's ideal for walking etc .not a bad little site . We was overlooking the river which was quite nice . Shame there is a road below which had a lot of quarry wagon usage .
The restaurant was okay and the staff very helpful,
If I could suggest anything to the site it would be to invest in DVD players to the lodge as we had take our own and also the tvs weren't the flat screen that we all know and love now. Having 2 children a decent tv is half the battle when sorting teas etc.
Also there were no towels provided
d which perhaps ho seasons should make known as we had to buy a set from Caernarfon . it's last thing you want to do after travelling 2 hours is go hunting for towels. Perhaps I'm just used to different accommodation . Also it was bit of a pain having to sort bedding out . I'm a man and fitting a duvet cover is something of a black art!!
All in all not a bad 5 days and would come back again ,,,kids want to as well.
Hopefully a few little tweaks and it will be spot on!!

Location:

About one mile south of Bethesda on the A5 in the Nant Ffrancon Valley. Set inbetween two very busy and somewhat noisy main roads, with a river running through the middle that was also very noisy in places. Not bad for for a short stay to explore the general Snowdonia area and take in some fantastic sights. But the small 'village' of Bethesda itself is very depressing with virtually every shop and business closed down and boarded up. Looking to explore a 'Ghost Town'? Look no further than Bethesda.

Accomodation:

You have a choice of caravans, some of which are 'sited' in some very precarious positions high up on what appeared to be nothing more than 'blocks' of slate. Or you can stay in a choice of 'Log Cabin'
We stayed in a Log Cabin on the right-hand side of the site as you drive towards the end of it. BE WARNED: these Cabins are set on a hill-side and they have gravel 'pathways' up to the entrance with tiny lumps of slate that made them EXTREMELY dangerous to walk on in the wet. One of our 'party' slipped up on the pathway and rolled down it where he sustained some very serious injuries. I myself almost slipped on the same path the following day, and my co-driver DID slip on it when we were loading up our 'bus' to depart.

The beds are NOT made up for our arrival. Instead you are left with piles of sheets that have clearly come direct from the Launderers still in their plastic wrapping. Not a major issue, but when you have travelled from some distance the last thing you want to do on your first night is make up the beds, especially the task of putting a duvet cover over the quilt!!
The pillows are useless. Very flat and you only got one per bed. You would be best advised to pack your own.
There was a problem with the lighting and the TV in my cabin but these problems were rectified by the time we got back after our day out.

There was stains, ring-stains from cups etc on the pine table, but nothing to deter us from using it. A Dish-Washer and a Washer-Dryer for clohing is also provided. The TVs were the old basic ones, not flat-screen. But we do not go away to watch TV.
Flushing the toilet became a bitt of a challenge as the water pressure was very low and it could take anything up to 10 flushes to dispose of everything in the 'pan' from one use.

The cabins themselves are NOT 'disabled-friendly' and there are no 'walk-in' showers, just bath tubs.

BAR / RESTUARANT

The food in the Bar/Restaurant is VERY expensive and they were not prepared to offer any sort of discount for a large group. Pity as even a few pence off of the price would have made a huge difference to the people in our party.
Somewhat hot and stifling temperatures inside made it a little unpleasant but that is probably just my own opinion.

STAFF

Friendly enough, those that we came into contact with.

My overall rating for this 'Park' - well, 5 out of 10.

Great peaceful location for exploring Snowdonia and surrounding areas. Would definitely recommend the area and visiting Betws y coed for a stroll around the shops and a drink and bite to eat in the restaurants/hotels there (Royal Oak - lovely). It was a shame that after booking lodges through Hoseasons for the past 4 years in various locations around the UK and being thoroughly happy with the accommodation, we were disappointed with the one at Ogwen Bank (No.16). The site and the lodge itself was nicely positioned, clean and in good condition. Staff at reception friendly and helpful. However, the lodge furniture, in particular the settee and armchairs, were badly stained and shabby (from viewing comments from July 2011, I noticed a similar comment from a past reviewer). We did not feel comfortable sitting down on the furniture without using a cover taken from the bed, to cover up the stains. The pine coffee tables were also marked with 'cup and glass' stains.
The beds were also very uncomfortable, with the springs of the mattress being felt with every movement. Bed linen was basic but clean, although the one pillow left for each bed was as flat as a pancake so we had to request more pillows (be aware that bed linen is left for you to make your own beds on arrival). Being a 4berth lodge, we expected ample supply of cutlery, crockery and oven dishes. However, there was only 3 knives and forks and there was short supply of baking trays/dishes for the oven. No oven gloves! It was no problem to request another knife and fork but it is something that you would expect to have been checked before you book in (the frying pan was also slightly dirty).
Although there is a dish washer, the limited supply of cutlery and crockery means you have to wash up as you go along as there is only 4 of each item (a problem when wanting to set food out buffet style).
For anyone staying in the lodges, I would remind you to take towels as these were not provided.

GOOD POINTS - Location was lovely, nice quiet park right in the middle of the mountains! Tesco is nearby!
BAD POINTS - After checking in to caravan number 51, the first thing we noticed was the smell, damp! The caravan was freezing with only a small gas fire in the lounge to heat the whole caravan! You could see your breathe in the bedrooms! We had to wear extra clothes to bed and had extra sleeping bags in the car which we placed over the thin duvets provided! The carbon monoxide alarm would start beeping after the fire had been on for over an hour. The grill didnt work and you took your life in your own hands when using the shower, if it didnt scould you it would freeze you to death! After complaining about the gas fire we were given a little electric heater to use instead of the gas fire, however we got more heat from the light bulbs! After complaining about the shower they turned the boiler down which left us with no hot water! Most worryingly we had a knock at the door from a lady who worked there to say that they could smell gas and that we shouldn't use the gas fire, they would send someone round first thing in the morning to check it was ok. They never came back, leaving us to either die of carbon monoxide poisoning or more likely freezing to death from the crappy electric fire they had provided! When checking and complaining about all of this we were offered money off future stays! We will never stay here again and would strongly suggest you don't either.
