“The highlight of our trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2011

We loved our stay at Casa Portagioia. Everything about it was great! It definitely was the highlight of our trip, as we recall the superb hosts, Terry and Marcello, the awesome dinner party, the beautiful location, the relaxing pool, the comfortable rooms that were outfitted so nicely, and the very personalized service and great advice that made our trip so special. Thank you both, and we hope to be back again sometime soon!!

We stayed at Casa Portagioia for 4 nights in June 2010. Terry and Marcello were great hosts. Our early arrival was a bit of bother until Marcello whipped up the most delicious lunch. This saved us from taking the car out again and allowed us to take in the gorgeous surrounds of this beautiful property. From that moment on we did not want to leave.

Terry gave some great advice on wineries to visit and things to see in the region. We went out to see some wineries and towns but we honestly could have stayed at the Casa the whole time. The rooms were very clean and the property has lots of different areas where you can drink wine, read a book and take in the surrounds without necessarily bumping into other guests. Its very private which is perfect for a couples getaway.

Casa Portagioia is an all-in-one package with its secluded location, private accommodation, a wine list to die for and delicious meals at restaurant standards. Once you arrive you will never want to leave...and you never have to bank balance provided!

Thanks Terry and Marcello for an amazing Tuscan experience.

In planning our stay in Tuscany, the challenge was selecting a bed and breakfast. In our search, we literally stumbled on the website for Casa Portagioia and recognized we did not need to search anymore. The website, tuscanbreaks.com, was extensive, informative, extremely helpful and inviting. We had no doubt as we begain our trip we had chosen well. We were not diappointed. We rented a car and drove from Padova and did not arrive in Castiglion Florentino until late. It was quite dark and even though we had Terry's directions in hand, we managed to lose faith.....(I did, not my husband) After getting a bit confused....(again me, the navigator, not the driver) I called for help....After trying to direct us by phone, Marcello decided the easiest and quickest way was to meet us and have us follow him back to Casa Portogioia. This worked like a charm and quickly became indicative of how much Terry and Marcello strive to accommodate their guests. In spite of the late hour, Terry and Marcello both greeted us warmly. Marcello showed us our accommodations, pointed out the many amenities, and bade us good night. This begain a stay of five days and four nights. Each day began with a scrumptious breakfast of fruits, pastries and those scrambled eggs!!. Coffee was served according to preference and consistently. While Marcello prepared the eggs, Terry provided the conversation and witty banter. He asked what the plans were for the day, offered assistance in directions, restaurants, and shared bits of information about the destinations. Intermingled in all of this was his dry sense of humor. Both of them kept up a steady stream of banter with each other and with the guests. Each day begain with this leisurely, engaging meal and ended with a welcoming return. I have thought of our stay there and how best to describe our experience. It is not difficult to provide top quality accommodations, exceptional service, and outstanding food. These components are replicated many many times all over the world. What distinguishes Casa Portogioia from all the others is the remarkable warmth and personable nature that permeates everything during one's stay. Marcello and Terry are the consomate hosts as they welcome guests into their home. I was a bit saddened to leave for I felt I was leaving dear friends whom I did not know when or if I would ever see them again....but not to worry.....we have already begun making plans to return!!!! We highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

We stayed at Casa Portagioia for 4 nights during our honeymoon in Italy. This was by far the best part of our trip! We wish we had chosen to stay longer! Our arrival was a bit rough after missing our train, being rerouted, and arriving at the rental car place in Arrezo after it closed that evening. Once our cab pulled up to Casa Portagioia we breathed a sigh of relief. Terry greeted us and showed us to our room (one of the apartments). Marcello quickly brought us paninis with fruit and tea. With all of the craziness, we had not been able to eat. After that night, it just got better. Here are some of the highlights!

1. Marcello and Terry are wonderful hosts! They helped us by arranging for us to get our rental car the next day, and they were always just a phone call away. They helped with everything from dinner reservations to helping us put our rental car in reverse! Their recommendations for day trips and places to eat were perfect! Our favorite restaurant was Antica Pieve.

2. Breakfast is wonderful. Cereal, yogurt, granola, pastries, coffee, tea, eggs, ham, anything you might want!

3. The property is beautiful, and the views are breathtaking. We enjoyed our day trips, but we always hated to leave!

4. We enjoyed helping Marcello with the Olive harvest! he was so nice to let us participate, and he even took us to the local olive press so we could see how the olive oil was made!

5. The location is perfect for day trips. We enjoyed seeing Cortona, Siena, Pienza, and several other towns! Most places are an hour or less driving time.

WE CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN!!!

We travelled to Casa Portagioia in April this year for my partners 30th birthday, and I can only echo all the other reviews that have already been submitted. Terry and Marcello are perfect hosts, and the setting of their B&B is incredibly beautiful.

I would thoroughly recommend staying here

My husband and I visited Terry and Marcello toward the end of our two week stay in Italy and Paris. We were worn out from travel by the time we arrived and their beautiful abode provided the much needed rest and relaxation. Their home was by far our favorite stop during the two weeks! The property is breathtaking, the food fabulous and the company could not have been better. Marcello's baked figs inspired us to come home and plant two fig trees! We truly enjoyed Terry's dry sense of humor and Marcello was the epitomy of finest hostess! Their suggestions for day travel were perfect and not ideas you would find in the travel books. Our only regret was that we had not spent more of our vacation time here. We will definitely return someday, but my husband has warned me that if I take him back, he will not return to the US! Terry and Marcello, do you still need a gardener and grounds keeper??? Thanks for the wonderful memories!

This B&B is located in a beautiful wine valley. It was a little out of the way from where we wanted to explore, but we were more than happy to have a longer drive every day to be able to stay at Casa Portagioia. We felt like the B&B was a tranquil paradise on earth.

Terry and Marcello are excellent and charming hosts with great personalities. Marcello is an outstanding chef who makes the best eggs and ham that I have ever had, and the breakfast spread includes a large array of fresh fruits, pastries, breads, cereal, and yogurt. Marcello also makes a wonderful and romantic dinner about 2 times a week, and I highly recommend staying for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious, and coupled with the outdoor setting in a garden rivaled the best Italian restaurants.

The rooms are a good size with beautiful views. The beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are clean. Terry and Marcello have thought of every detail including toothbrush holders. The whole place is absolutely beautiful with lush English gardens, Tuscan decor, and a gorgeous surrounding landscape. The pool is relaxing and worth a day on its own to soak up the Tuscan sun and enjoy the view.

My husband and I travel a lot, and we don't like to repeat places because there is so much in the world to see. However, we do plan to return to Casa Portagioia because we loved our time there so much.
