“A wonderful place: amazing breakfast, lovely hosts, good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2007

Casa Portagioia is a wonderful, well run, eight-room property in the Tuscan hills near Castiglion Fiorentino (a €15 cab ride from the train station there). Hosts Terry and Marcello are delightful and accommodating: we arrived well before check-in time and they were nothing but welcoming.

The positives are almost too numerous to mention. Besides the hosts, we loved the breakfast (included in the price), the lunch (not included but reasonably priced), the gorgeous grounds, the setting AND the fact that T&M run the hotel with ecology in mind. It feels luxurious without being wasteful. Even the mini-bar is good value, and we NEVER use mini-bars.

A special note on the breakfast: it is possibly the best I have ever experienced. (I'm a five-year vegetarian in my late 30s.) There is a wide variety of cereals, fresh fruit, dried fruit, pastry, yogurt, even nuts and seeds (all self-serve). Marcello makes delicious scrambled eggs, too.

Although many people use the Casa Portagioia as a base from which to explore the Tuscan/Umbrian countryside, we stayed on the grounds for our two days there and enjoyed listening to and observing the wildlife (including terns skimming the pool for insects) that seem to love the hand-maintained gardens even more than we did.

If we could change one thing, it would be to have tea/coffee-making facilities in the room so that we would not have had to trouble T&M with our requests for that.

  • Liked — Breakfast and the hosts' way of being accommodating without being obsequious
  • Disliked — No tea/coffee-making facilities in the room

When we say "lifetime highlight & memory this is what we mean: This is the special stay that you are lucky to experience a few times in your travels, if at all. We concluded our 21 days in Italy with eight nights at Casa Portagioia. It is tucked away in a quiet valley accessed by a scenic five mile drive. The property (villa) is gorgeous, renovated six years earlier, it was revived under strict Tuscan architectural guidelines. It is a gem. Every room is equipped with the best decor, fixtures, and linens.

You drive into the property through a cypress lined entrance up to the villa which is surrounded by incredible landscaping. There is a sunflower field, a newly plated vineyard (on the property), and serene views in every direction. There are miles of walking in the valley, which is reserved as a protected wilderness area.

The proprietors, Terry & Marcello are the greatest. Hilarious personalities, care for all details, and a pleasure to spend time with. Listen to their recommendations for day trips and local dining. Don't ask Terry for directions. The breakfast and eating area (inside or out) is splendid. After breakfast we ventured out to nearby towns & wine tasting adventures- the finest vineyards & most scenic drives, Montepulciano, Assisi, Cortona, and the local town of Castiglion Fiorentino. However, sitting poolside with a book and taking advantage of Marcello's pasta dishes was worth not heading out. He is a fabulous chef and gets really excited to share his cooking. I could have done this everyday but my wife dragged me out.

Our suggestion: stay as long as you can here and do it at the end of your stay in Italy. Another suggestion- rent your car through their website (you will save a ton), cash is king when staying at B&Bs, hotels, & villas.

We miss you both, see you soon. -Charlie & Leslie, Denver, CO.

Terry & Marcello have done a fantastic job renovating this farmhouse and have thought of every last detail down to the towel warming bars in the bath. A true home away from home. You won't want to stay elsewhere because the grounds are beautifully manicured, rooms have the highest quality linens and accessories. Marcello is a gourmet chef with breakfast and dinner (if you have the chance then your Tuscan experience will be complete.) Terry has the greenest thumb and it shows by the beautiful flowers and citrus. I would like to see the front of the property in late summer when the sunflowers will be in full bloom! Both are extremely helpful with local information and they even made us reservations for a hotel in Rome on our way out!! All in all a life experience that will be cherished!!! Can't wait to return!

It's a little hard to find but well worth the effort. These are two of the nicest guys I've ever met. They have done a fantastic job renovating the original house and guest rooms. Nothing is left out, warming rods for towels, fluffy robes, wine and chocolate in the rooms, great breakfast everyday. Plus beautiful grounds surround the house. Terry and Marcello are so funny, helpful, and knowledgeable you can spend the whole time just listening to them talking. We truly felt like we were leaving family when our trip was up.

  • Liked — The owners!
  • Disliked — That we didn't get one of Marcello's famous dinners!
