“Again...perfection!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

It was our second visit with Terry and Marcello (the first was in 2008 for a mere two days--our loss at not knowing to make it a longer stay!) and it was a wonderful 5 days of peace and relaxation, leisurely divine breakfasts, and memorable day trips to Ravenna, and Tuscan hill towns. You'll never feel more welcome or comfortable than with Terry and Marcello. I'm a gardener and the gardens and grounds of Casa Portagioia are my idea of heaven--perfectly framed vistas, fragrant flowers, gorgeous trees and immaculately cared for grounds. Breakfast is always a visual feast and delicious. Our room was immaculately clean and the bed wonderfully comfortable, as before.

The first reservation we made for our three week trip to Italy was Casa Portagioia..one year in advance..and we planned our entire trip around it. You will NOT be disappointed!

I brought my daughter (28) and her cousin (34) to Casa Portagioia for four nights following a few days in Florence. We appreciated having one base from which to make day trips, and we'd already decided to tour the southern and eastern portions of Tuscany. So, the location was very good for us. Each day's drive was no more than 60-90 minutes to the first destination.

We were fortunate enough to have two rooms next to each other (Castelli and ??) and facing a lovely garden and lawn. These felt very private, and the proximity allowed the three of us to easily be in touch with one another without disturbing other guests.

The only complaint I can contrive is that the accomodations were so comfortable that we were SLOW to leave each morning. And one afternoon we were glad to return early. Had the weather been warmer, enticing us to enjoy the swimming pool and sunshine, we might never have toured around very much!

Rather than echo other reviewers general praise, I will identify some specifics that really "made" our stay:
* Our hosts' kind attentions to us. Who doesn't love a "good morning, darling"?
* The dogs! All three of us are dog lovers. I sense that the pups might be kept out of the way if guests are not keen on them, but we specifically asked to visit with them each day.
* A range of breakfast items for either hot-breakfast or continental breakfast lovers.
* Afternoon antipasti. This became our dinner one evening. Thank you, Marcello.
* Excellent coffee, including a French Press provided to me by Marcello for early mornings.
* High-end toiletries in generous quantities.
* Thoughtful help planning daily itineraries. Without Terry's or Marcello's advice and maps, we might not have added some of the side trips that we did.
* Dinner and wine-tasting reservations.

The valley in which Casa P is located is quite beautiful. I wish we'd explored it more. The route to Casa P proceeds far enough from the main road that one might wonder WHERE the final destination is, but there are enough Casa Portagioia signs on the road to keep a driver pointed in the right direction.

I hope to return one day.

Many thanks to Terry and Marcello for their gracious hospitality and contribution to our wonderful vacation in Tuscany. Casa Portagioia was our home base for 9 nights while we explored the Tuscan countryside by day. While our expectations were high given the excellent reports we had read on Trip Advisor, I think we didn’t quite imagine just how lovely the setting at Casa Portagioia was and how welcome we would be made to feel there. From the first night, when we arrived much later than expected, we knew we were in good hands as Terry showed us our rooms, briefed us on breakfast and then sent us off to a lovely local restaurant for a relaxing evening meal. Best advice: don’t plan on rushing through breakfast. Take the time to savour the fresh squeezed, the fresh fruits, the freshly baked, Marcello’s eggs and ham, and refill your cappuccino! Compare notes with the other guests and plan the day ahead. Terry is a wealth of information and will offer great advice – with a wicked sense of humour thrown in. Although my husband peppered him with endless questions each morning – he always indulged us with the greatest of patience and enthusiasm. After a full day of touring the extraordinary Tuscan countryside, it was always such a pleasure to arrive back at Casa Portagioia. Happy hour on the patio with good friends, overlooking the olive groves and vineyards, with the sun setting on the Tuscan hills – was a great way to unwind. The rooms were super comfortable with top qualiaty linens, tasteful decor and all the amenities. The restorations and landscaping that Terry and Marcello have done on the property are remarkable and are testament to their impeccable taste. And - if you have an opportunity to experience one of Marcello’s 5 course dinners – DON’T MISS OUT!! He will even share his recipes! All-in-all – Loved the setting, Loved the hosts, Loved the food, Loved this place! We will be back!

My wife and I visited on our honeymoon and stayed for three nights. Terry and Marcello made us feel welcome and right at home. Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway in the Italian country-side or a base to experience towns like Castiglione Fiorentino or Cortona, this is the perfect place to stay. We visited in late-April so it was a little cold to swim (I did so anyway!!!), but the pool, grounds, and rooms are immaculate. Let Marcello make you a plate of cheeses and meats, with some wine from the vineyard to lounge away the afternoon. We had a wonderful visit and would recommend Casa Portagioia to anyone interested in staying in Tuscany!

I'm speechless (well almost!) I'd like to describe the breathtaking property and the best hosts in the world but it's all been said... many times too. Truetruetrue! There seems to be something else though that defies explanation. My lfe is busy and overscheduled with little time for quiet. I think this may be the reason that many of us who love (and who doesn't?) Casa Portagioia become spellbound. You can breathe the relaxing kindness and generousity of Terry/Marcello and somehow feel really at home in minutes of arriving. Amazing how wonderful it is to have conversations with guests from all over the world, sensing how good and rested everyone feels surrounded by awesome beauty. Saying goodbye until later on.

A warm reception awaits you when you arrive. Terry and Marcello are the most wonderful and gracious hosts. The attention to detail is not to be missed whether inside or around the premises. The rooms are well appointed, beds are very comfortable and linens and bed coverings beautiful. In the morning there is an abundance of fresh fruit awaiting you as well as many cereals, breads etc. Terry and Marcello greet you in the morning with fresh squeezed orange juice and choice of beverage. Marcello makes eggs to order every morning.

They are the most gracious and funny hosts. They have kept us laughing since our arrival. We are very lucky to have read the reviews for Casa Portagioia and been able to experience it for ourselves. Don't miss out on this very special experience if you had the opportunity. We hope to come back and visit them again.

Room Tip: I think any of the rooms would be wonderful as they take great care in appointing each and every one...

Me and my wife Kathy had a very relaxing 4 day stay here at the start of May. Terry and Marcello were great hosts, the rooms were everything you could want, and the bed was the most comfy we had on our whole trip around Europe!

Loved sitting outside taking our time at breakfast, just enjoying the view and sounds of Tuscany in the spring.

Their suggestions for day-trips were spot on, the town of Pienza being the highlight for us.

Highly recommended.
