“A celebration of Chinese-Australian heritage in a beautiful rural setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2009

This is a perfect base from which to explore the history and beauty of
north-east Tasmania. I am descended from one of the Chinese tin
miners of the north-east. My great-grandfather was Chin Kit who had
mining interests in the Weldborough/Branxholm locality and who served
as an interpreter for the Chinese mining community. Our trip to the
area was in order find out more about his life and times. The prospect
of accommodation between St Helens and Scottsdale looked bleak until
we discovered the Tin Dragon Trail Cottages. These provide a
beautiful and environmentally sensitive place to stay with proprieters
who are appreciative and knowledgeable beyond all expectations of the
history at their doorstep. The interpretative centre, the walk
through the mine and water races of old, and the sculptures of the men
who once worked there are a great credit and testimony to the care
Christine and Graham are taking of a very special place in the world.
Think stars, rainforest, trout-filled river, shy wallabies and
echnidnas rustling in the bush. With more time we would have seen the
platypus as well. The world's two monotremes in the wild! And all
this from a beautifully appointed studio cottage carefully thought out
for the discerning traveller who seeks a place that offers layers of
experience way beyond the ordinary.

We spent three nights in late December 08 at the Tin Dragon Cottages while touring East and North Tasmania; the cottage was an ideal base for touring the Tin Dragon Trail but also for Launceston and the vin yards of the Tamar Valley. The Tin Dragon Cottages are set in lovely countryside with a heritage walk and nature walks nearby and lots of wildlife, our cottage was really well equipped and very, very comfortable, there was a fabulous array of provisions for breakfast. The owners are very friendly, welcoming and helpful with tips on places to visit, interesting walks and where to eat. I was travelling with family but I would recommend the cottages to young families, couples or friends who would like a relaxed rural base.

I stayed at the Tin Dragon Trail Cottages while in the area for work, and was disappointed not to be able to share the visit with my partner - the cottages are spacious and beautifully appointed, the breakfast provisions were thoughtful and the rural ambience was delightful. I was particularly impressed when I was able to wind down in the evening with a relaxing outdoor spa overlooking the fields.

I will certainly be back to take advantage of this little piece of heaven in future!
