“Terrible service. Terrible Hotel. Racist staff.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2010

Coron, Palawan is a lovely vacation destination because of the beautiful islands and lakes. What the worst part of our vacation was this horrible place: Kokosnuss. We're a group of Filipinos and what's ironic was that we were not treated like paying customers just because we're not white. The staff are unprofessional and some of them are not even polite. They treated us like we're not guests just because we're not foreigners. Their rooms are cramped but the room we got had a big bathroom (but who needs a big bathroom?). The airconditioning was poor, bed was uncomfortable, linens were cheap and pillows were hard. They could at least compensate the lack of facility with good customer service... But NO. Do not expect that from their disrespectful, ungrateful and untrained staff. Oh, and stay away from the cute baby boy because the ugly wicked nanny will just make you feel like you are not to touch the boy because you might harm him (DUH?! Then don't let him out or play around the resort if that's what she wants to happen). VERY UNFRIENDLY to Pinoys. The staff would attend to foreigners quickly and politely because they're expecting tip, maybe. Too bad, we would've given them much more than those backpackers can if not for their ignorance of good hotel service. When I complained (and mind you me, I discussed the matter with them in utter diplomacy but they said that the management/owners do not care about complaints of "Pinoy" customers.
Plus, the pest-infested resort has mosquitoes as big as lady bugs.
Before leaving the resort, I even got confronted by the YAYA (Nanny) who tried to be defensive! The gall of that woman to confront hotel guests! Wow! Instead of apologies, we received retaliation! TERRIBLE.

So, check-in at Kokosnuss at your own risk.

this resort surprised me for how cozy and wonderful it is in the location that it is.

upon arrival, we received welcome refreshments.

resort overview...
we stayed in cottage #22 (with aircon). the room was clean and i appreciated the murals. the bathroom was spacious. the bed was comfy, with the room cleaned every day and towels replaced.

there are plants in the bedroom, which would naturally attract bugs, but by no means is the room pest-infested. there are many cockerels/roosters around, crowing at all times during the evening.

staff were helpful and nice.

good food at the resort restaurant. highly recommend ordering breakfast the night before.
internet is available for 200PHP per 1/2 hr.

coron island...
the small town of coron is quaint, full of friendly locals. take a tricycle to anywhere for 10PHP per person. recommend going to town and trying some of the restaurants:
- bistro coron (good pizza, sausage and french onion soup).
- la sereneta
- seadive resort restaurant
- don't forget to stop by the market for some fresh turon or bananacue.

I've stayed at Kokos Nuss twice. The first time in 1996 while on a 7 day paddling trip around Coron Island and the second time a couple of years ago with a bunch of friends exploring the area. The area is amazing to explore, the deserted islands by banka, diving the wrecks, shopping in a very rural market, walking the rice fields in pitch blackness trying to find a disco that we knew was out there . . . . . . . But about Kokos Nuss. Owned by a German guy, his son and their wives, an outpost of relative civilization in an amazingly primitive area. Yes, there are some bugs, hot water is iffy, phone service is unreliable and the resort is about a ten minute walk out of town at night after the tricycles quit running. But the warmth of the staff, the ability to buy food in the market and have the restaurant turn out pretty well done meals, the absolute quiet and the blanket of stars at night. I can't say enough about this place. Our last night the owner and his son played an impromptu concert for the guests while we listened in the courtyard drinking beer. I can't say enough about the place. More than just a resort, it's a priceless experience, After writing this I realized I sound like the owner. But I'm not, and for anyone that has the chance. I've done a lot of traveling but this place is special. I suggest you see Coron before the big resorts move in.

Visited for a trip over Christmas 2009. I was pleased with the set up, garden setting with interesting features. The rooms have character but they are overpriced and we were told they hot water and this is not true. The neighbour is a chicken farm with many Cockerels, not a problem if they started at 7am but they make noise throughout the night. Many many guests were complaining and leaving the resort because of them. They drove us mad eventually with very little sleep.

This could be a fantastic resort in principle. The over all feeling was that the place wished it didn't need to have the inconvenience of guests and they could live a communal lifestyle. I often needed to remind myself that their primary business was as a guest house and my ordinary requests for water, to change rooms etc are acceptable and reasonable.

Go and check it out, you may like it but take ear plugs and be assertive with the staff.

aside from the bugs all over the resort, the water is being turned off from 10 pm to 7 am... being a filipino, we always need water for our daily routine. let me cite to you what we've encountered...we've stayed here for 3d/2n, on the first day it was ok. on the second day we woke up around 5:30 in the morning because we were going to Mt. Tapyas before sunrise and was shocked to learned that there are no water running on the shared bathroom. my friend went to the owner's house to asked and fix it so we can clean up before the island tour. my friend also asked the owner if this is the first time that this happen and he said that he will check and fix it... he had to fetch the tubero or the foreman of the resort who arrived around 6:30 am. basically we left the resort for our island hopping around 7:45 and we cancelled our Mt. Tapyas trip (so much for viewing coron)...

The place was not as accessible (especially on weekends) though it is located along
the highway. why? few tricycles pass by especially when you needed them most and on days when people don't normally go out especially that the north-bound is going to places with less inhabitants (going to the airport too).

Note that you can't go out late to enjoy "night life" in this small town as the tricycles only ply at 10pm latest - except when you chance upon drivers who venture driving overnight!

The room are made native in looks - sawali walls, bamboo floor, shell decors, bamboo beds, etc, The place is surrounded by a garden, complete with big-sized hammocks, tall trees, weird and artistic statuettes and figures, etc. This explains why almost all comments about this resort points to one common complain - pest infestation : mosquitoes, crawling and flying ants, roaches, and more. If you find the sound of geckos and frogs on rainy days cute and amusing, then you're in for a treat !

Service of the staff is only as good as when you first arrive and if you survive the horrors without a single complaint. Otherwise, you'll get sloppy service everytime you give them a problem : like a fan room with a ceiling fan that can barely whisper, then you ask for a desk fan. They would give it to you but without hearing murmurs.

Most of the toilets and bath are "shared", meaning common. If you wanted a toilet inside your room, that's quite expensive enough to shell out.

The same rate with this "far" resort to those within the town proper, you get better options : toilets in every room, cheaper rates, location at the center of the town, screened windows and open crevices to deprive bugs from pestering you, and many more. (Just read their online ads and you understand what this resort want to do with their guests).

I booked from Manila supposedly a two-night stay since the hotels were fully booked during this rainy season (a surprise for both tourists and locals). But when I assessed the condition when I come back after a whole-day island hopping (courtesy of the budget tours organized by Expeditions (a Coron Galeri community-based initiative), I made up stories just so I can check out after that mosquito-bugged overnight stay!

I wouldn't recommend this place for those malaria and dengue-scared people.
