My friends and I booked our dives with Neptune for some wreck-diving from 13-18 February 2013 as a recommended dive centre & their offer of diving inclusive of dive equipment was exceptionally enticing given that Zest Air only allows 10kg checked in baggage for free. Being the total cheapskate backpacker diver that I've become in my old age, I don't believe in enriching airlines or endangering myself by overloading a turboprop airplane into Coron!
Neptune is hard to miss being painted in bright blue amidst the rows of plank & wooden outlets peppering the entire "highway". BTW, highway here is not your usual 2-4 laned Autobahn. Think your quiet suburban roads inhabited by trikes, bikes & jeepneys.
To cut a long story short - pros & cons are as follows:
Local divemasters are excellent & their dedication is the ONLY reason I'm giving this place a 4 star rating
a) Equipment are in good condition & mostly new.
b) Food on diveboat cooked by our DM was a mamma mia delicious!! MUST TRY - "latuk" salad, a type of crunchy emerald-green grapelike seaweed harvested fresh from the sea during your dives!!
c) DMs are attentive & really care about the equipment (sometimes a bit too much until they forget the divers!!)
d) The boats hired for our dives were clean, comfortable (except when they cannot open the canopy due to strong lateral winds). Toilet designs are unusual - reminded me of kindergarten.
Only one memorable con but this is a MAJOR con & should earn this centre some censure from PADI.
The centre is supposedto be a PADI-endorsed centre (PADI flags all over the place) but they have NO EXTRA dive computers!! The one they apparently have, was being serviced in Manila. I cannot understand how an internationally endorsed dive centre could reasonably function without extra dive computers to cater for the inevitable breakdown of their clients' own equipment (as what had happened to my buddy & I when both our Suunto Zoop encountered major problems)
PADI should seriously look into all dive centres carrying their logo & touting their standards to ensure that the centre attains & maintains that standard!
This is a MAJOR no-no for any self-respecting dive operation & would have earned Neptune ZERO STARS for not having such an important item in their equipment inventory. We were forced to dive without computers & using dive tables with the help of our DM's personal comp. In my opinion, a dive centre must have at least 6 functioning dive computers before they are allowed to open for business!
To top that, the dive centre man-in-charge didn't seem at all perturbed that the safety of their dive customers may be compromised & just shrugged his shoulders when queried....!!
I will only return to this centre if there was major management revamp. But I'll happily engage its local divemasters again if they could freelance!
A million thanks, Tantan & Jason and all the crew who made our trip memorable. You guys should be the ones running the dive centre!
