“Decent accommodation, but we wouldn't stay again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

We recently spent 3 nights at Discovery Divers Resort, Coron. On the plus side, the resort is on a nice little island, which you can walk around during low tide. Unfortunately, there isn't much else to do there. (The boat to Coron Town isn't free. Be prepared to pay PHP 100 per person for the round trip ride every time you want to go into town.) Discovery arranged two island-hopping/snorkeling tours for us, which we really enjoyed. The prices of these trips cost slightly more than if arranged in Coron Town; however, our things (camera, money, etc.) was always safe on the boat during these day trips. The best thing about the resort was probably Riza, the Guest Relations Coordinator. She's very knowledgeable and friendly.

However, our room left something to be desired. The beds were extremely hard, and parts of the bathroom looked like they had never been cleaned. The shower curtain was moldy, and there was a family of spiders living behind the bathroom door. Also, the resort does not have hot water. The weather is hot so you probably won't want a hot shower, but a freezing cold shower isn't comfortable, either. The rooms only have twin beds, no doubles. And if you don't go with the full-board option, they won't give you free drinking water even when you are eating in their restaurant and buying other drinks. (They charge PHP 60 for a one-liter bottle of water!)

Discovery Divers Resort wasn't horrible and the price was good, but we probably wouldn't stay there again. Next time, we will stay in Coron Town, where there are more things to do and multiple dining options.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room overlooking the water for the best view.

The place has basic facilities, big rooms equipped with simple furniture, great view on the bay and islands. There is no hot water however, often no electricity until 1 pm and almost no internet connection at least in the rainy season. But all of this was not actually a problem for us, though we did expect the internet recording the information from Agoda.

The major problem was the stuff. There were several situations, which left us with a feeling that the stuff does not give a thing about their clients and that we are treated like a second class here.
The culmination was the discussion about smoking in the restaurant. We do not smoke. We also try to avoid situations when people make us passive smokers because it is actually as harmful as the smoking itself. Usually we ask people politely not to smoke around us or in public areas where the smoke can disturb others. This time a dive master of the hotels dive center began to smoke in the restaurant and we asked him to stop. Hi did not. Instead he was arguing with us and insisted to continue to smoke even when we told him that it disturbs us badly and it is very bad for our health. The second dive master (Luke) came to us, listened to the conversation and began to smoke intentionally!! We were shocked by such attitude. Luckily, the owner of the hotel (Danny) was at the moment in the restaurant, so we decided to discuss the situation with him. The owner took immediately the side of the dive masters and told us that
1) He is not going to do anything to resolve the situation.
2) his is not going to change anything in this place to protect non-smokers from the smoke (we suggested some things like separated areas in the restaurant or special place for smokers)
3) he does not care if the smoke disturbs us
We concluded that he treated non-smokers as the second class here. He denied to admit this obvious fact and became really aggressive. He began to yell at us! At his guests!! I asked him many times what solution can he suggest, what we suppose to do? Should we go outside in the heavy rain or hide the whole time in our room to avoid smoking? He did not answer any of my questions. He just yelled that he is not going to continue this conversation. He was very rude and made an impression of very incompetent manager. He has even gone so far to tell us that he is not going to have a conversation with three ladies because it is useless. That was a real sexism! He did not have any arguments or skills to resolve the situation and he ended up insulting us, telling us that he is too good to talk with women. At the end he just refused to talk to us and walked away.
So no surprise that the other stuff has the same attitude to the guests.

Some things here looked like cheating: they tried to charge double of the price in the menu for two of our dishes and for the boat trip to Coron. Even if it was a mistake I do not feel myself comfortable in the place, where the stuff makes such mistakes, I do not want to check every dish in the bill and to compare prices with the menu.

Other things l consider like an ignorance and a non-competence. For example:
1. One of the local dogs has injured its paw. I noticed the bloody footprints and small lashes of blood everywhere on the terrace on the second floor. It did look quite scary. I told the stuff that they should check if the dog needs any treatment. They did. But nobody cleaned the terrace that night, and the next day, and the day after the next day when the blood has eventually faded thanks the monsoon. We felt quite uncomfortable with all this fresh and dried blood everywhere. Can imagine, what the impression the new guests got from the terrace. I personally do not like to live in the horror-movie scene.
2. The lights on the terrace are bright and will disturb you during the night time if you like to sleep with open curtains like we do. We asked if they could be switched off. The manager told us that they could not switch the lights off because other guests may need them but they can remove the bulb near our door. Such solution is not really comfortable, if you want to go somewhere in the evening. The stuff has the only switch for the terraces on the both floors. It seems inconvenient that guests cannot manage the lights near their rooms without disturbing other people. The problem could be easily solved by installing separate switches near each room but as I said before the hotel stuff does not seem to care much about the comfort of their guests.

If you are non-smocker, or a girl, or just a person, who appreciates a comfort and a friendly attitude, you might think about another place to stay. Such guests are not welcome here.

We stayed 4 nights at the Discovery Resort in April 2011. We enjoyed our stay very much. The whole staff was very friendly and they did everything to make our stay enjoyable. We had 3 diving days with the the dive center. Marcel arranged the dives in a way everyone could enjoy the wrecks according his skills. I also had the chance to do my Best wreck dive ever. Went into the Iraku on 43m and dived through narrow and pitch black cargo rooms. Marcel has a Great knowledge on the wrecks. We really had a great time. Thank you to little Mama and the whole team.

We stayed 4 nights at Discovery Divers in November during our 10 days long visit in this region. The cottage was perfect ! Large, airy with a very good bed and bathroom and beautiful view to the sea and islands from its terrace. But what I liked the most was the architecture of the cottage : tasteful, practical and natural. The food in the resort restaurant is average but OK. The services offered (transportation to Coron town, trips to near destinations) were very good, the owners (British/Philipino couple) and the staff were very sympathetic and always helpful to satisfy our requests. The resort in a word is amiable.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

Stayed at Discovery Resort Coron with two friends from March 4-8, 2011. We had tried booking at dozens of places in Coron unsuccessfully before someone in my office recommended this place to me. My friends and I were SO HAPPY that everywhere else was fully booked and that we ended up at Discovery!!

I could honestly write a small novel about how great our stay was, but I'm going to (try to) keep this brief. We were picked up by a van driver holding a sign with my name on it right outside of the airport in Busuanga. He brought us down to a little bar at a dock by the water while we waited for the boat to take us to Discovery. This was a great first impression already, enjoyed a nice cold San Mig light while overlooking the bay.

TJ, the owners' son, brought us to the island (about a 5-10 minute boat ride) and upon our arrival we were greeted by Little Mama, one of the owners. She was so nice and welcoming. Next we met her husband Allen, and the rest of the staff - a bunch of super nice Filipino girls.

Our rooms were great - pretty basic but very clean which in my view is most important. The view from our rooms was spectacular.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the resort every day. No complaints about the food, and you should definitely try the Little Mama salad! The prawns were great, the curry too.

We did three full days of activities and the staff at Discovery arranged everything for us. The first day, we went 'island hopping'. Boating, snorkeling, and beach lounging.. with a few beers - doesn't get any better than that! We went to the local market in the morning too, picked up some fresh veggies to make salad and the boat drivers helped us pick out some good fish. While we were laying on the beach, they cooked up the fish and prepared our salad, took care of all the dishes.. and did everything! It was amazing.

The next day we spent scuba diving in Japanese ship wrecks from WWII - incredible. And the third day we went out about an hour and a half away on the boat to this secluded white sand beach paradise. Same thing - they prepared all of our food and took great care of us. On the way back we stopped for some snorkeling as well.

All in all it was a great trip. One night Little Mama and Allen even took us on a little pub crawl of the local little bars in Coron! Those two are the greatest. Other than our night out, we loved just sitting outside at the restaurant/lounge-type place at Discovery, having a few drinks, and meeting other guests there. Everyone is in such a great mood and so friendly on that island - it's impossible not to be!

Finally, a quick note... Discovery is not on a white sandy beach island (although I hear they may be importing white sand and making their own beach)... but this was no problem whatsoever for us. I imagine that if we were staying somewhere right on the beach, we wouldn't have done the island hopping or beach trips that we did - and that's when you get to see the REAL most AMAZING beaches - away from the main land. It was also nice being on Discovery's own little island away from the main strip in town at night. Quiet, beautiful, calm... exactly what you want after a very long day of fun out on the water! Plus, any time you want to go to the main land, you just let one of the staff know and they'll have the boat ready for you and the trip only takes about 5-10 minutes.

We paid P2000/room/night... well worth it!

Room Tip: Who cares - you only need it for sleep!

We've spent a week in January 2011 with Discovery, and it was everything we hoped for! We went there to celebrate our 5 years anniversary and got engaged there :)

The location is great, you're on your own little island, relaxing and beautiful, but a short 10 minutes boat ride from town, which makes Discovery very convenient as well.

The staff really made the difference. They made us feel at home, helped us make our schedule with great suggestions and locations, good cooking in the resort and on other locations while island hoping. We were picked up from the airport and taken by boat from town to the resort. The rooms are not the newest you can get, but they give a nice relaxed feeling. You get good value for money, the staff and environment gives you the added value. btw - there are no hot water on the island, but it's so hot anyway, you don't need it. Look at the sunset over the bay from the terrace, you'll feel all worm inside ;)

If you're a diver, Coron is one of the best places we've dived at around the world. Amazing spots and unique dive settings makes this area a divers' heaven. Discovery has good equipment, and work with very good instructors.

You can always go to town for dinner and drinks, and come back with the boat later, but don't miss out on sitting with the resort guests and staff at the end of the day for beers!

We had a great time, and were sad to leave and go back to the Beijing concrete jungle, but we know we now have a home in Coron :)

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff is really friendly and helpful, helping you out but not forcing you for anything or trying to cheat you. The place is at only 5-10 min boat ride from town and offera great sea view and cosy, calm environment that you can not find in town. The food is also good. They do not propose it on a daily base but you can ask to get a fish BBQ. Worth it!
