It's unfortunate that this type of genuine Scottish guesthouse is chosen by those used to packaged holidays in Turkey and Spain with modern custome-built facilities. They choose such as St Blanes obviously because it's cheap...and compared with similar in Britain and in the mediterrainean it IS cheap. These folk are then disappointed when the accommodation doesn't live up to their expectations, just as they are disappointed with their Spanish hotel for having insects, and the lack of hot water in their Greek hotel. To express their disappointment they then castigate the hotel on TRIPADVISOR.
The Isle of Bute has many expensive hotels and B&Bs. St Blanes is very reasonable, the building is Victorian A1 with superb architecture, the views are unsurpassed, and the location on a Scottish island takes some beating.
Despite the comments on TRIPADVISOR my wife and I had a very enjoyable stay for a very modest price. As Scottish holiday guesthouses go it was better than most, and we were treated with courtesy and helpfulness. I don't expect the hotelier to be my best friend or slave!!
