“Huge Portions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

This pub is in scenic Farndale (famous for its daffodils) in the North Yorkshire Moors national park. It serves the standard pub fare, but adds some countryside specials - such as rabbit and game pies - which wifey and I went for, both served with perfect real chips. (Be warned, the portions are huge). And an excellent Black Sheep ale on tap. The only downside is the tiny car park, although there is another 100yds up the road.

Small inn that has no wifi. Instead you can have real conversations with all the locals. Nice warm fire, friendly people, good cook, great food. Well hidden. Only few people know how to find it and lets keep it that way.

The worst place we stayed on the coast to coast. Closed for check-in between 2-6pm, rude staff who were openly contemptuous of coast to coasters and made our children feel so uncomfortable that they asked to go to bed. Food was expensive and poor quality (couldn't eat the lamb shank and mushy peas were brown) and breakfast was terrible. Long walk from C2C route along a steep and busy single track road or £10 taxi

What a great little place to stay, excellent views. Fantastic atmosphere in bar and restaurant and the food, well what can I say, absolutely excellent!
We have stayed here a couple of times now and not been disappointed, the rooms are basic but clean and comfortable.
The breakfast is great and as always looked after very well by Rachel and the locals at the bar who were all extremely friendly!!
Well worth a visit

Stayed here for one night on Coast to Coast walk. Room was great and location superb in terms of countryside and peaceful setting. Breakfast was worst on coast to coast however, with what appeared to be powdered orange juice and supermarket budget everything else. Food that appeared to have been cooked sometime ago and kept warm awaiting serving. Disaster!!

Room Tip: Only book if you don't want breakfast!

We made it down hill in the mini heatwave, glad of a cold drink & a warm welcome. Room nice, bright & clean. Great photos on the wall. We sat in the beer garden admiring the views and relaxing. Evening meals were HUGE, no matter what you chose you had a plate full. Great value and quality. We managed to force down a pudding too, judging by the hill coming down we'd need the energy to get back up in the morning. We were offered a lift back up but my dear husband said that's cheating so walk back up we did. Nice place to stay away from the crowds at the lion.

Thought I'd have a walk on the moor to see the daffodils but the weather completely confounded me. Call me a wimp but the horizontal rain was just too much. After half a mile or so I called in to this pub, mainly to get out of the rain and - there was a roaring log fire, a warm welcome from the landlady, it was lovely. Had a couple of pints of excellent Black Sheep bitter and thought, "I must come back here another day and stay awhile". The menu looked appetising, though I didn't eat on this occasion, not expensive - good wholesome food.
